[IC] GMK Modern Dolch 2 - GB Launching June 3rd
« on: Sat, 16 May 2020, 22:01:11 »
Hey!

I remember when I first thought of Modern Dolch, it started out as a simple idea to make a version of Dolch without the brown ish alpha colour. I further developed it with Dixiemech and it has since turned into quite the popular set. R1 aftermarket prices have been going insane and the compatibility on it was quite limited compared to some of the recent GBs we did so we figured it was more than time for a follow-up! Modern Dolch 2 keeps the colours which made the original so great but adds a lot of options both in compatibility and aesthetic, so we think we have something to offer for both R1 buyers and those who missed out!

Just like R1 this will be a short IC, the GB for Modern Dolch 2 will be going live on June 3rd!

Inspiration

Many of you have probably owned one or more variants of the timeless Dolch colour-way. I always loved the contrasted yet simple look between the 2 greys, however I always felt like something was a bit off: the colours just seemed a bit too warm and “muddy” to me. I really wanted to give a more muted and modern look to this timeless colourway, which is where Modern Dolch comes in. It keeps the simplistic look and the beautiful contrast between the 2 greys, but cooling the colours down and adding some fresh accents. The result is a very versatile set, which goes well with simple silver/black boards, vibrant teal boards and anything in between.

Kits

Standard

The standard kits has compatibility for the most popular layouts in the community. It features the reworked icon mods introduced with GMK 8008/9009 and has the classic Modo accent options for both escape and enter keys.

Addition

Addition adds support for 660c style layouts, ISO UK, 60%s with arrows and boards with an F13 key like the TGR Jane V2 CE. It also adds alternate legend options for 65% layouts and more.

Numbers

Numbers adds compatibility for layouts with a numpad. It also includes the keys needed to outfit a 1800 style layout.

Obscure

Obscure adds support for 40% layouts, both staggered and ortholinear, and split spacebar boards with options ranging from 1u to 3u.

Aesthetic

Aesthetic is for those of you who like to add a little bit of colour to your boards, either through extra accents or through LEDs under lock keys. It also adds both centred and offset 6u spacebar support.

Alternate

Alternate introduces a whole new simplistic look to Modern Dolch by “alternating” the existing colours on some keys. This kit is great if you enjoy monochrome accents or a more uniform looking f row.

Command

Command is specifically aimed at Mac users by adding correct legends for Command and Option keys.

Modern

Modern adds the option for a full icon bottom row, function, escape and 175 control and command keys. It also adds an alternate icon for the tab key.

Norde

This kit adds compatibility for ISO NO, SE, FL, DK, DE, US layouts. It also includes 1.25 and 1.5u Alt Gr keys, a 1.25u Shift and ISO enters in the 3 Modern Dolch colours. This means that Norde users don't have to buy the Addition kit!

Mist

Mist is a stand-alone base kit for those of you who want a cooler and more colourful take of Modern Dolch. It's kit design is nearly identical to the Standard kit, exchanging the red accents for an F13 key and a second B for Alice layouts in combination with the spacebars from the Obscure kit. This makes sure all the most popular layouts from 60% to TKL are supported!

The GB/Vendors

The GB for GMK Modern Dolch R2 will go live on June 3rd and will be sold by the same vendors you've come to love with our previous GBs :D

  • Dixiemech for the US
  • iLumkb for Asia
  • Mykeyboard for the EU

It's less than 20 days away! They're gonna do it soon.

Glad to see this is coming back, probably going in for one!

The clout kit looks appealing as someone who has the first round.  Why is the F13 key alpha colored in the addition kit? Feels like it should be mod colored for the sake or symmetry with escape

There is a mod coloured one along with the other keys for full mod coloured F row in Alternate :)

TBD but probably near identical to Modern Dolch Light considering the kits are almost identical apart from some minor tweaks.

Looks great.

Is it really not possible to have the 2 Green Escapes and then 2 Red 1u Enters instead of 4 Colored Escapes in the 40s kit.

For R1 of this set people mostly stuck to uniform accents, forcing a choice like that doesn't seem like a good idea. Adding both options for the enters too would add quite a lot of keys.

then why even offer the escape accent. 1 accent looks so odd and drives the price up

ISOless "clout". Bad sign.

R3 \| missing from the Addition kit.

R1 `¬¦ and 4$€ in the Norde kit are actually for the English (UK) layout, so they should be moved to the Addition kit.

AltGr is missing (in Norde and/or Addition).

But hey, R2 is finally here.

The decision to put the 2nd 2.25u shift and the 2u shift in the ISO kit is questionable IMHO.

Personal take here, but I think it's counter-intuitive to strip base kit compatibility that we've established and accepted for a long time now for the sake of base kit pricing.
Splitting numpad and pricing at 1000MOQ is one thing, since it's a relatively large kit, but moving commonly used shifts/PGUP/DN/Home/1.5u Super/FN/1u Alt that aren't commonly used with ISO into the ISO kit seems silly to me. Also the decision to go Mac-only for the OS keys in the icon mod kit seems strange.

"Clout" is just a bad name for a kit. I'm sorry.

Otherwise, it's cool to see this set coming back seeing how popular it was during and since the first GB.

Anyone in the states buying obscure and doesn’t need the split bars 2.25u/2.75u (maybe the 1.25u), lemme know. Can PP upfront or trade out from aesthetic or alternate.

Edit: trade in place with my main man

I love my MoDo R1 to death, and I have the shine to show for it. In for Clout to replace my alphas.

Glad to see an alternative cyan accent in that kit — I hope it's a slightly different color to R1, since the cyan color is the only thing I didn't like about R1: it was a tad too light and greenish for my taste.
thank you for coming to my ted talk

Splitting numpad and pricing at 1000MOQ is one thing, since it's a relatively large kit, but moving commonly used shifts/PGUP/DN/Home/1.5u Super/FN/1u Alt that aren't commonly used with ISO into the ISO kit seems silly to me. Also the decision to go Mac-only for the OS keys in the icon mod kit seems strange.

"Clout" is just a bad name for a kit. I'm sorry.

Otherwise, it's cool to see this set coming back seeing how popular it was during and since the first GB.

2u shift layouts have never been popular, 660 has lost a lot of popularity too. Clueboard used to be big but only big 660 GB I can think of in recent times is the Volcano. FYI stuff like the 1.5u Super bottom row, 175 Function and different 65 layout were added not moved, they weren't included in R1 at all. Mac only was decided after it proved most popular on a poll for Modern Dolch Light.

Someday, if you ran Clout, but used the red instead of the blue, I’d buy that too

The whole "base within a base" is a bit of an experiment for us, I wouldn't be comfortable with running 3 base kits at once.

It's the same cyan from R1.

Deliciousness. And there will be a desk mat as well?

Maybe ;)

having an extra b in the clout kit would be nice.  but its all looking nice so far.

Hmm this might be possible, I'll think about it.

Something I'm still wondering with your kitting: Why aren't you including the ISO necessary keys in the Norde kit?
(yeah there are some weirdos who use ANSI-DE etc. but that's a minority within a minority)

no ISO in the base set? :(

I honestly prefer it like the R1 base set:

That kit was $140 priced at 500 MOQ, this one will be ~30% cheaper for most people since ANSI 60-TKL are by far the most popular layouts + the current setup is way cheaper for 40% users too. Modern Dolch Light used pretty much the exact same kits and had a $34,99 Numbers kit, so $134,98 for US numpad users once you add in Standard. Kits didn't sell enough back when R1 ran to do the breakdown/amount of options we have now hence the update.

From my inexperienced eye, it seems a lot of thought was placed into stripping down the base kit to support the most common layouts with the fewest keys in the aim of making an attractive base kit price. This is also at the cost of flexibility as those who slightly deviate from the common layouts will end up paying quite a bit more for 1 or 2 keys.

Traditionally, ISO and Numpad users felt this the most. Now expanded to 660c and people who prefer slightly different 65 or 60 layouts, F13 TKLs, etc. At least with ISO and numpad they get a group (a kit of keys) that are useful. For some of the others, they have to debate purchasing a full kit to get 1 key or a few keys.

For example:
1.   Need a Function key instead of caps? Need to buy a complete child kit.
2.   Need another 2.25 shift to support the second Tab in Modern Kit to support two mod set ups? You would need to buy another complete kit for one Shift key.
3.   Need an F13? You would need to buy a kit for one key.
4.   On your 65 you like having R3 PgUp and R4 PgDn? Buy a kit.

There is an elegant logic to not paying for “extra” keys and stripping them out from the base kit. But it feels that the burden is now over-shifting to child kits. Maybe that’s the intent; ie child kit buyers need to pay the high premium as the base is for the majority. But it really does leave a sense that value and “bang for the buck” are bring destroyed from the base kit.

I suspect at this time, the layouts are finalized so feedback is limited. I will buy the base and several child kits. I hope future design doesn’t just focus on base kit price, but the delicate balancing act between price and value.

It is the same as the ModoL modifier colour yes!

1,3 and 4 are all keys that weren't even an option in R1. Like I said before 660 has become way less popular than it was when R1 happened. Previous base kit was $140 in GB after the price drop. Looking at MoDoL pricing Standard + Numbers was $134,98, in the case of Standard + Addition it'd be $129,98. I can't think of any boards that use a 2u shift, 2.25u shift, alternate 65% cluster, ... with a numpad. You would need both for a numpad board with ISO but looking at data from previous GBs that's a tiny percentage and does not weigh up against 60%-TKL ANSI and 40% users.

Yes but no boards use both numpad and 660 shifts. Price/key will always be lower the bigger you make the base kit with GMK but that doesn't matter if most users store away half the keys. This is cheaper for far more people (like I said 60-TKL and ANSI and 40% users make up the majority of users).

Thank you for the response. I believe you and dixie took a lot of care in your decisions. The point I was making is that by increasing usefulness ratio in the base kit, it is decreasing the usefulness ratio in child kits. And then making those keys more expensive due to the associated manufacturing costs on child kits. I think F13 in the base kit makes more sense.

I guess another way I think about it is that Modern Dolch is a prestige set of the community. I am probably wrong, but I dont think Modern Dolch depends on a lowest base price possible for success.  An additional $5-$10 premium in the base kit to add more flexibility to the set may be worth it. I don't think people like being nickle-and-dime'd on trying to pick up child kits where, depending on kit, a substantial number of the keys may be useless.

On a final note, this kit model pricing model has been used before. And so if it has worked for Dixie in the past, I can understand the use of the same kit model going forward.  Feedback is just feedback. Designers and vendors make the tough decisions knowing not everyone is going to be happy.

For me same sad story as with 9009, modo light etc ...

Many kits with less MOQ can put Numpad and Basic ISO into a Base for around ~140 €

Look at what Masterpiece can achieve for 140€ or Classic blue for 144€ ...

Metaverse was 125 - just 18€ more on mykeyb with numpad and basic iso

9009 was 177 € if you wanted iso keys and numpad - modo light almost the same and i think more kits were sold.

This won‘t change here i think?

For me the oohh do cheap base is a bit sad ... compare to many other running sets ...
I really would like to have MoDo putthe kit design and pricing doesn‘t really make me happy and as with 9009 i‘m really struggling what todo

$165 to get R1 base compatibility that was offered at $140 does seem a little steep.

But I agree with Janglad's point. If TKL, 60, 65% makes up most of the user base, it makes more sense to save this majority group $40 and to charge the minority 96/100% group an extra $25.

That of course assumes that R1 base kit would still be $140 today. Dixie full size kits are usually around $125 right?

I can get on board with ISO support in the base kit even though I don't use ISO, all depends on the % of ISO users. I don't see myself going back to 100% anytime soon so I'd rather have a smaller base set for $40 cheaper.

Again though how many people in this hobby use both ISO and numpad. This +10x less than how many people need just Standard or Standard + Obscure/Numbers/Addition which is what the kits were designed around. For all of those combos it comes out cheaper than R1.

If its a short GB, probably to get people enough time to get ready to buy? IC doesn't always mean a designer has to take feedback, it's to see if people would buy the set. I'm sure janglad has way more information on what people actually buy from his previous GBs than small asks by people who have edge case needs.

I mean MoDo doesn't really need an interest check I'd say, it's that kind of kit. I do see where you are coming from about what typical IC are.

This does follow MoDo Light kit setup which worked so I assume Jang and Dixie decided to maintain the previous scheme.

Maybe there needs to be another tag besides IC or GB. IC for many means both gauging interest and getting feedback. There are some interest checks that benefit from feedback. There are some other interest checks that are more of a heads up so people get ready and the GB runner/vendor don't need much feedback or end up going in circles over the same feedback.

I for one do appreciate the heads up that a Modern Dolch is coming down the pipe.

There is an elegant logic to making the base kit as inexpensive as possible while serving the most common layouts. It delivers real value to the most people.

It just shifts a lot of price premium to the purchasers of child kits. If the child kits were price efficient, it wouldn't hurt as much. But each child kit usually has an additional $10 overhead by the manufacturer for sorting. So if I purchased Addition, Aesthetic, Modern, and Numbers, I pay this overhead 4x, once for each child kit. In addition, child kit order quantities are lower and don't get much in pricing breaks compared to the base set. But going the other way doesn't make sense either. You cannot create a giant set and charge $200 for people to get in.

I just wish that if the base price increased by $5-10, they could add more compatibility saving some folks from buying a child kit (f13, 660 support, etc). Marketing wise, we perceive $99 as being much cheaper than $100. Dixie and janglad are smart. They have real market data to drive their decisions. I am just a guy in the peanut gallery so I'll shut up now.

I love this set! I've never done an IC/GB before, so I'm not too sure if it's too late for my feedback:

1. Have you ever considered updating the main legend font for Modern Dolch? The rounded letters are a nice homage to the original set, but I feel some sharper edges would suit it well. I imagine it's too late to change something like this.
2. Similar to the previous, I think a few of the modifier legends could use updating, like the arrow keys. Maybe this could be sold as a separate set? Or with the "Modern" pack. In particular, some legends like these feel more modern to me:

Sorry for the poor quality pictures, hopefully you see what I mean. I think the rounded, bulbous appearance of a lot of the legends betrays its more modern feeling. After all, that's the purpose of the "Modern" addon pack!

Again though how many people in this hobby use both ISO and numpad.

More than you think! But this attitude of pushing "ISO" (a misnomer if there's any) and numpad users aside, and then point the finger at their absence to justifiy the omission certainly does not help matters (and that's before taking into account obvious errors in the "ISO supporting" kits).

I like the more minimal base. Breaks down the barrier to entry for us noob keyboard fans with regular layouts. I hope this results in 2500+ kits for you, especially if you do that day 1 mod light discount again ;)

Ive been talking about this for a while with friends. If we could reduce the cost of these high quality sets for the majority, the uptake would increase and the community would grow quicker. More people in the community = more potential for growth. Eventually, cheaper bases like this will pave the way for reducing the price on things like child kits and the more hardcore of us will be happy. Keep it up mate! Taking the hobby forwards and not back!!

It's definitely correct what you say. The cheaper the basic set, the better for most.

Thats the first time I've seen the name though I saw the board in the Redacted IC.

As for the debate about kits; I get why people who get pushed to child kits get upset at having to pay more when its only one or two caps extra needed, and I also see the argument that coverage for the most popular layouts is there in the base kit.

As someone who does fit in the base kit for my layouts, selfishly I do like the idea of a cheap base kit that suits me rather than a kit with spare keys that I'll never use. And the sales from MoDoL seem to agree with the approach.

I might regret that view later when I get a board that needs an F13 and I haven't got one here though... Because I'll be in for a base kit for sure.

I believe that the r1 has num and iso and 660 support for $140, but for r2 it seems to be 99+35+30= $164?? I don't get it.

I believe that the r1 has num and iso and 660 support for $140, but for r2 it seems to be 99+35+30= $164?? I don't get it.

indeed, cost-wise R1 was a better option than R2. Seems like this is a way to get more profit of it... :(

Yes but no boards use both numpad and 660 shifts. Price/key will always be lower the bigger you make the base kit with GMK but that doesn't matter if most users store away half the keys. This is cheaper for far more people (like I said 60-TKL and ANSI and 40% users make up the majority of users).

But I have 660 iso and 980 and tkl, and I want switch the keycaps. Also, speaking in favor of most people, why not make a $110 base including 660 support and iso support?

You can't go out of your way to buy a niche keyboard with a niche layout and then complain it's not supported by the cheapest possible base kits. It covers all standard TKL, 65% and 60% boards and that's more than enough. As a 60% Tsangan user I can't wait for the day base kits get even more stripped down and the F-keys, arrow keys and nav cluster keys get their separate child kit as well.

Would love going for the Norde kit. But honestly the price for Modern Dolch Light Norde kit was way too high.

Mostly EU people like me wants the Norde Kit, but paying $60 additional with the shipping charges and taxes would made me pay around $250 for MoDo light from mykeyboard! one keycap set shouldn't be the price like a lowend keyboard.

It's not about you can't use the keyboard without it but it's

1.) not practically because I have to search the special character or chose a layout i'm not used to and missing the "umlauts" (ä, ö, ü)
2.) it's optically not nice when you press Y and it writes a Z

But it's your choice if you don't want to pay for the Norde kit.

I understand what you mean about the prices.

That's the choice you should make when you want to buy the kits wou wanted.

But this is no problem for residents from the Netherlands, as there is no 'umlauts' and we use QWERTY keyboards. Standard layout from the US will work just fine for us.

I totally understand the idea of stripping the base - but the difference is too slightly in my opinion.

For EU vendor there was 18€ difference from 9009 to Metaverse, for numpad and basic iso - and +70 at 9009 thats really huge.

So it is a self fullfilling prophecy - people not sure of numpad will never get it now

But thats just my opinion - you‘re the boss

Any chance to get matching deskmats?
even the modern dolch light deskmats would fit, but a darker, more toned down look on them would look so great.

my desktop is ready for this kit and a deskmat

also praying for Base+Addition+NORDE to hit moq.

As a 60% Tsangan user I can't wait for the day base kits get even more stripped down and the F-keys, arrow keys and nav cluster keys get their separate child kit as well.

And this is the kind of thinking that I find so problematic: the very concept of custom keycap sets was built upon the premise of everyone participating in the GB would subsidize each other's special needs (I don't use 1800 or 660 keyboards, but I don't mind "their" keys added to the set because they in turn will subsidize "my keys", like the R4 Fn key and the split space bars; Alice requires an extra B, so now most sets support that, even though there aren't that many Alice users (yet); etc.).

What we're now seeing from some sellers is a race to a "distilled bottom" in the name of (lower prices and therefore) increased sales, where a few annointed layouts get all the goodness of a lowered price, while whoever deviates, even if slightly, gets shafted with subsidizing both each other within the smaller non-annointed group AND the annointed group's lowered price, while people in the latter group only reap the advantages. This is unfair, and while it does present short-term advantages (for the seller and the annointed group), it IS a serious problem on the longer term and hurts the community as a whole.

And this race to the distilled bottom already has a logical endpoint... ((m)ass)drop's tailored kits, which are heavily critiziced by the community at large for this exact same reason (yet the seller doesn't seem to care).

This is NOT to say that a good discussion and agreement on what should be present on a base kit (and absent from it) should not happen, because that is exactly what we need, but the way to do it is certainly not through the decisions of a few vendors, who then might use the clout gathered from their own sales numbers to justify their agenda later on (with the added problem of differing agendas being pushed).

I know you are very confident in your kitting. Out of curiosity, I checked MoDoL prices for Base, Additon, Numpad, Spacebars and Obscure. Compared with the same compatibility + very similar amount of keys, MoDoL was $35 more than Olivia++. If you take out ISO, it was $60 cheaper for near equivalent keys. Obviously there are minor differences between the keys you are given, and Olivia uses one stock GMK color. Help me understand, am I missing something?

Doesn't one group always end up subsidizing another group? I mean your argument still holds if there was a more fleshed out, $140 base kit? In that scenario people with 60, 65 and TKL would have subsidized the niche group.

I don't think you are missing anything. Olivia ++ base kit ($110) is $10 more than MoDoL base kit at 99.99. Olivia gives you a numpad in the base while MoDoL does not (there maybe a few other key differences). Distilling MoDoL down is the key feature of being able to advertise a sub-100 base kit. And it creates economic value for each purchaser of the base kit as long as they are standard 60, 65 , tkl users by saving them $10.

You lose overall value ($10 numpad vs $35 addon kit numpad), but if you are not a numpad user, that's dead weight value and a $10 cheaper base kit is better. Child kit purchasers pay a much larger price since they are paying additional sorting and overhead premium for each kit. The more child kits you purchase, the more this premium hurts you.

So when you point this out, this is actually by design.  The discussion by detractors is really a more meta discussion. Is much lower child kit sales compared to base a function of low interest OR is it a function of the price premium being too high hence people who want it won't pay it. Another lighter discussion is if a few more keys are added, does it create actually value for the cost or simply dead weight value for the majority.

PS sorry for not shutting up despite what i stated in a prior post.

While I do appreciate the effort to reduce the entry barrier by lowering costs, I strongly disagree with it

I bought GMK 9009 r3, base and spacebar kit, never expecting that I'll need another kit.

But now, even before 9009 is shipped, I feel I would need the Numpad and the extra 2.25U right shift.

Smaller base kits aren't sustainable in the long term, especially when Olivia++ did so well with a cheap base set.

My latest GMK purchase, Noel has everything for $135, Numpad + extra shifts (+ISO), A similar compatibility for this would cost much more, as pointed out by others. A person willing to pay $100 for plastic that shines is willing to pay $120 for plastic that shines and he can actually use.

This is because the designers and my views diverge, maybe the even communities view diverge. I do not buy keycaps thinking which keyboard I'll put then on, I would like to swap keycaps and who knows what layout would be popular in the future. Alice layout is gaining popularity, maybe it'll decline in the future, 2.25U and 2U may or may not be popular in the future. But how much does one piece of plastic cost among 100 other pieces of plastic?

With that being said, I really like the set, but would not buy at this pricing. For I know, It's not sustainable for the hobby and me, which thrives on customisation. This requires more keys. Would it be that much expensive to add Numpad and some shifts to the base?

MoDo was clearly sellable at $95 and profitable at $100. I'm guessing this too would start at $95 then jump to $100. By adding the kits to the base how much of a difference could it make, a few dollars perhaps.

I agree. This is exactly what I thought with 9009 :P that I wont need more keys. It dosent hurt to add some more keys to the base itself. for marginally more money. It reduces headaches for GMK, the vendors and buyers.

this isnt about community. its about making money lol. at the same time im good with as cheap as possible base kit especially if it has a 40s kit since 40s is all i use. selfish? yes but at least its actually a usable set for me and if enough people buy maybe more sets will have my support. I know for damn sure if you had expensive base kits they still wouldn't have 40s kits integrated and i'd end up spending more money and odds of 40s kit hitting get even lower.

...." It's not sustainable for the hobby and me, which thrives on customisation"....

Ill ask, what comes first, chicken or the egg? Do we add maximum support at a high cost that slows down the hobbies uptake by non elitists/hardcore customisation guys? (aka non standard 60/65/tkl people) Or do we reduce the cost to break down the largest barrier to entry for the majority, which might eventually result in subsidization in cost for those who need more keys via increased total sales (if the community stays positive and doesn't go full money hungry Drop style it should, in theory). Either way, in the short term there are winners and losers. I do however trust that a rising tide raises all boats. Think of all the potential newcomers more willing to put GMK sets on their Ducky 60s propping up the rest of the hobby via profits. Keen AF for cheaper base!!! I hope the vendors make all the money!!

...." It's not sustainable for the hobby and me, which thrives on customisation"....

This is most definitely NOT a "chicken or egg" situation. And your trust is more optimistic than it should: a "tide that raises all boats" would have "potential newcomers" accepting the massdrop-grade kits and never even bothering to try out ANYthing else because of that cost barrier, a problem that would be amplified by greedy sellers wanting to maximize profits while at the same time pretending the whole thing is "community minded".

This is NOT a good direction. Let's all steer this thing somewhere else.

I completely agree, the drop GMK Samurai kits are pretty useless for custom mechs. That is a stripped base set (too stripped IMHO).

May I quote Adam Smith: "It is not from the benevolence of the butcher, the brewer, or the baker that we expect our dinner, but from their regard to their own self-interest. We address ourselves not to their humanity but to their self-love, and never talk to them of our own necessities, but of their advantages"

It's pretty clear, the vendors aren't here to "save us from the aftermarket costs" but to make profits. And that is ok, but please don't fake it.

Destroying the hobby in the same of saving it. Worthlessly reducing the base kit, faking to provide "value" while it stripes it away.

Though I can see why some people aren't happy with the base kit size and admittedly I am biased due to the fact that it covers all I need. I'd think this method worked best for the majority and for business as well. I would have assumed this would be the most logical way of running it, but I am not well versed in the economy if these things so if I am missing something I'd appreciate some information.

After studying the sets, for Modern kit, it would be nice to include 1.75 Function Key (3 line symbol). If not possible for this GB, maybe for future GB. This is assuming GMK has a mold for it. Not necessary per say, just nice to have.

Also, not sure on the economic feasibility of it,  but maybe include discounts if more than 1 child kit is purchased. One child kit is listed price. If two child kits purchased, discount is $5-7. If three are purchased, then discount is $10-14. If four are purchased then $15-21. Even if this cannot be done for this GB, maybe something to consider for the future.

Thanks.

Not sure what your point is. Many things in life work on the principle the more you buy, the more likelihood you get a discount. Most suggestions in this thread are requesting to add keys to the base kit or collapse child kits into the base. I think most of us know that's not gonna work that way either. Why not approach it a different way?

In the past, discount schemes didn't work since the community was not big enough. It was at times a struggle to make MOQ. However because of that smaller community, the base kit was more featured (and expensive) to attract more people to reach MOQ. If the community is so large that you can have a stripped base kit with numerous child kits, why not help folks who buy multiple child kits?

That being said, I can think of reasons why not. It could be logistically difficult for Dixie to track and calculate the discounts on their web platform. Or it may not be cost effective to offer any discount cause the margins are too small to offer anything on the child kits. Or maybe multiple child kit buyers are so few in number it doesn't matter. I don't know. But if the margins do support small discounts, then it may help increase sales of child kits and may help vendors lessen the probability of buying child kits just to make MOQ.

Implementation should be possible with a coupon App for Shopify which most vendors use, but not 100% sure. Might still be tricky.

The main issue is profit margins. Group Buys already operate on very tight margins for the most part (there are exceptions of course). Something like the cost of air freight across the Atlantic ocean increasing by 2-3x due to COVID-19 has already ****ed over some vendors.

Some kit improvements!

Renamed Clout kit to Mist, Clout was probably a bit "5 am" brain on my part. It originated from some internal joke but that obviously didn't come through, Mist sounds nicer and more professional :) Also added a second b per suggestion of udler so you can use it on Alice layouts when combined with Obscure.

Removed the alternative ISO UK keys and added a R3 pipe for ISO-US support per suggestion of depletedvespene. Also added 1.25u and 1.5u Alt Gr keys, 1.25u Shift and the full 3 ISO keys. This means that users of Norde layouts won't need to purchase Addition, should make it a good bit cheaper! Do note though that kit price will go up compared to MDL for this since the previous kits were already sold at cost.

same number of accents but allows for nicer look than just escapes.

That also opens the consideration of the Alternate kit.

Great set, definitely a must buy for me! I do have a hang up, though; considering that I use a UK ISO format, and I'm going to go all in on purchasing the Base with the Addition, Aesthetic and Modern kits, it's a little annoying that I would have to purchase the Norde set as well just for the addition of the ISO number 4 key cap (split dollar & symbol format). Is there any way that this single keycap could be included in the Addition set? I don't object to paying more for this one key, and as a completionist it would bug me if I didn't get it... Please advise!

Yeah, same actually; it's only when you're looking to build a ISO UK format, or are stuck with an ISO board that you notice these particularities. So I don't think it's intentional of the retailer, but it would be nice to not have to buy both the Norde and Addition kits to get a full UK ISO (with six enter keys!?). Slightly off topic, but isn't it funny that in order to build a 'complete' Brexit board I need to buy the Norde kit? You must draw your own conclusions...

Which "4"-key are you exactly looking for? Base kit has the "4 $" key used in UK-ISO layout. Norde kit has only the "4 ¤ $" key for SE/FI/NO/DK

I think he means the 4$€ keycap which WAS in the initial Norde kit but was removed from it (along with `¬¦ ).

Could you include spacebars in that light grey accented color in the alternate kit?

This keyset looks so clean. Might join in on this GB when pre-orders are up and get this as my first GMK set! This set would go perfectly with my black tofu case.  :D

Which kit includes the dark gray "X" key shown in the top right of these renders? I don't see it anywhere.

Ooh wow, I definitely should have noticed this. I made that scene for the IG teasers some months ago and didn't think about it any more. Thanks for pointing that out!

I had the small hope that the picture of the base kit wasn't up to date and it would eventually be in the kit.

Any chance that the dark grex X makes it into the base kit?

Is there gonna be a X key like this render? I see in the alternate kit it's inverted colorway.

A grey white spacebar would be so nice to have, any reason to not include it?

Thank you for the response! My body and wallet are ready, that board is the end game I never knew I needed.
