MX browns are expensive
« on: Wed, 11 August 2010, 14:50:24 »
When I asked Das why the Silent version costs more than the regular, they said that MX brown switches cost more than MX blues. When XArmor mentioned to me that they were probably going to roll out an MX brown version of the U9BL the rep briefly griped about how MX browns are the most expensive MX switches and said, "I can see why Das charges more for their Silent version".

Why are MX browns so expensive? Is the demand for them huge and the factory has low yields? I'd think MX blues would be more expensive as a two-part stem must be more complicated to manufacture. But no, it's the browns, which must be close to the same cost to manufacture as blacks or clears.

What gives?

The i-rocks isn't so expensive at 70$ on ebay, I think it's more the companies that use browns than the browns themselves.

I mean the switches themselves, not the boards.

For any supplier I have seen, they're about the same price.

Unless there's a shortage of them relative to the demand, they shouldn't be more expensive than the Blues given that they are a simpler switch internally.

Doh, I remember. Gah, my memory is terrible. Where'd I put my keys again? Who are you?

But still now XArmor/iOne is saying the same thing. They presumably have direct access to Cherry price lists.
