Layout Creation?
« on: Mon, 15 March 2021, 21:15:19 »
I created a custom layout but people said it was bad. I still want to create a custom layout but I will need help. I want it to be relatively ergonomic, compact, and I don't really want to make it curved or split or anything like that. If you guys think that I should make it more ergo by doing something like that tho, I will listen as I know from experience that the geekhack community is almost always right. I just want tips tho, not just you creating one for me as I would like to cater it to myself more. Anything would be welcome!

Thanks,
Me

it's all about what works for YOU and what YOUR preferences are. yes, you can take guidance from others if you get stuck on a particular part but create what YOU WANT, not what others say is "good" or "bad"

i think some of the comments from others was because your layouts were close to existing options that could be purchased. (so trying to save you time & headaches from taking the hard road)

Due to human physiology, keyboard ergonomics are not a purely subjective matter and there are guidelines that are almost universally accepted as good. You can say "I like big bars and I cannot lie" (space bars that is) and no one should argue with you, but that doesn't mean that they are efficient/ergonomic.

Split halves, thumb clusters, curves, angles, staggers, tenting and ergonomics go together like a horse and carriage and trying to separate them is an illusion.

totally agree. but @Me is just a kid trying his hand at building his 1st keyboard. we need to be supportive as he STARTS his journey. (Me had a previous thread introducing themself)

i know i'm still not using the 1st board i built. but it was a great learning experience as i started to figure out what i wanted/needed.

Thx so much every one for the support! I'll def check out those inspiration links! One problem is that I was dumb and did not get dsa keycaps, so now the layout has to correspond with the profiles somehow. I'll think of something, but I'll have to be pretty creative!

I have one more question. Do you recommend for my first board going with something more ergonomic like split of rotated keys and stuff like that or sticking with the basic shape of a standard keyboard. Also, if I decide to go more ergonomic, how will the production of the case and plate be(I am handwiring)?

that's up to you. what do you think you'll like? what looks interesting?

for a first board, i think assembly (soldering etc.) & programming would be a good enough project and get your feet wet as far as what this hobby is about.

handwiring plays three major roles....
1. an easy way to create something that doesn't exist yet
2. a way to bring a vintage board back to life without designing a new pcb for it
3. an inexpensive way to make a keyboard (wire, solder, diodes & controller)
- there's no reason to handwire a layout that already exists in pcb form that's readily available. unless you're just doing it for experience.

there are tons of great kits out there
- keeb.io - has a bunch of great, inexpensive kits. mostly split FR4 spaced plate designs in all sizes & shapes
- could do something with all through hole components like: Mysterium (TKL), Herringbone (75%), Discipline (65%) or Plaid (40%ortho)
- and there are oodles & oodles of split kits out there in just about every size & shape https://golem.hu/boards/ has a huge list

thought of another example
katotaka’s ortho angled 1800-ish https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=103881.0

Allright, thx! I think that for my first board I will create a layout that is a little more ergo than than the standard layout(split bar, the thumb being used more but not to the point of clusters, etc.), but I will stick to the shape of a standard board for the sake of simplicity. Thanks for all your help, and especially you, @nevin, as I think you've pretty much answered at least once to every post I've put on geekhack about this board. You've been a great help.
