[IC] GMK Motorsport
« on: Sat, 03 February 2024, 04:58:59 »
305941-0

I've been a long time formula 1 fan, and I always thought the steering wheels on those things are cool. This set is inspired by that carbon fiber aesthetic, along with bright colors that feature prominently on the buttons and dials.

I thought it'd be fun to play around with the legends as well, just to match the theme a bit better. (Do check out the legends, I changed them all :thumb: , hopefully fellow racing fans will get a kick out of it)

Any possibility of having an additional alpha kit so that everything can be CR with CC legends?

Love the accents kit, but not so sure about the base kit. Any reason why it is grey on black?

Is there any chance of considering an alternate manufacturer (specifically Key Kobo)?

I like this a lot, especially the accent kit. Genuinely an exciting project.

Probably because their inspiration for the set is a F1 steering wheel, and in the link they put it's black, carbon fiber, gray, and the colors in the accent kit.

Include the accent kit with the base kit.

Sell the boring mods separate  :D ;D

Also second the question about making this something like KeyKobo instead of GMK for shorter lead times.

In accent kit the 1.5u "<- Retire" should be R2, not R1

Personally I don't think anyone should be using GMK anymore unless it's to re-run an old design and help alleviate the aftermarket woes of finding sought-after sets at decent prices.

KKB is to my eyes of nearly identical quality - some small flaws but no more than any other double-shot ABS keycap manufacturer. Beyond price, lower MOQs for child kits is also a big boon, meaning niche kits such as 40s/NorDeUK are more attainable (for example, KKB Miami Nights' NorDeUK was £29 and recent GMK sets have been as high as £65. The lead times are comparable and at the very least not longer than GMK).

I recently did a side by side of R2 of KKB WoB versus GMK Originative WoB, both of which were manufactured in 2023, and concluded they're identical to the point I had to look at the different undersides to determine them apart. The former cost me £70 and the latter cost me £130 (though I acknowledge this to be anecdotal). Just no reason to contend with GMK's cons anymore, IMO! :)

Just a thought that would tie into the F1 steering wheels: have the function row in RGB (or variations thereof) to match RPM LED's.

Love the concept, cheers.

Edit: the legends of the F row to not clash so much with the overall aesthetic

Would you consider:
1.5U Retire accent in R2
1.75U Up Shift accent in R4
1U Magic accent in R4
6U spacebar
