[IC] GMK ADA revamp | NEW NOVELTIES
« on: Tue, 14 January 2025, 11:04:18 »
GMK ADA

Welcome to the interest check for GMK ADA! Originally, this set was designed by another passionate community member who unfortunately had to step away due to personal circumstances. After reaching out and obtaining their permission, I am excited and honored to carry forward their vision and bring this set to life.

The original design was inspired by Pantone 137C, a striking and vibrant color often associated with Veuve Clicquot’s champagne label. It also draws influence from the iconic yellow and orange items seen in the work of Dieter Rams’ office, adding a layer of timeless design inspiration. This distinctive hue gives GMK ADA a unique and elegant character. Additionally, the set pays homage to Ada Lovelace, widely regarded as the first computer programmer and a historical figure who has inspired countless innovators.

As a person with a deep love for monochromatic and simple sets, GMK ADA aligns perfectly with my aesthetic sensibilities. Its clean, understated design is versatile and timeless.

For more details, you can check out the original IC here

Base Kit

Novelties

This time around, I’ve had the pleasure of collaborating with Stellaidoscope, who helped bring two very special novelties to life, each one a nod to Ada Lovelace’s legacy and the early age of computing.

The first is a flying machine a representation inspired by a design Ada sketched during her youth. It captures her fascination with mechanics and early steam powered technology, a curiosity that would later fuel her pioneering work in mathematics and computing.

The second is an abstraction to the punch cards used in Charles Babbage’s Analytical Engine, represented here as an Enter/ASCII key. These punch cards served as one of the earliest forms of inputting data into a machine, and this novelty honors Ada’s groundbreaking contributions to programming through that same machine.

Each novelty aims to blend elegance and history, highlighting the brilliance of a mind far ahead of its time.

Punch cards used on the analitycal engine, if you are interested on how these actually worked, you give this a read https://www.fourmilab.ch/babbage/cards.html

Yes, DCS Sport Walker is remarkably similar to GMK ADA which had it's initial IC December 2020.

Sure, and Fredington even commented in that thread. No one "owns" yellow. I'm pointing out that there's a set actively on sale right now that is very similar, but I'm not sure how well they will both do given the similarity. Did the first set even run?

The first set didn’t run due to some personal issues with the original designer, but it had significant interest from the community. The only similarity between the two sets is that they both feature yellow. One key factor I find important is GMK ADA’s specific color saturation. I plan to run this set in late 2025, so I don’t believe there should be any concerns about overlap or conflict between the two.

A rough comparison. Note that monitors are not perfect, nor are these RGB codes.

The only thing missing is a killer set of novelties. I love the color scheme, but for me what makes a purchasing decision a no brainer is a solid theme that carries through to the novs as well.

Considering her life and history, some ideas that come to mind would be:
  • Birds
  • Paper/Wax wings
    • Bernoulli numbers
    • A simplified icon of Babbage's analytical engine

I'm looking into this. Most likely, I'll include an Enter and an Esc in the base kit.

I quite enjoy the look of this set, but it's missing R3 PgUp, R4 PgDn for proper 65%/75% support (while including some much less frequently used keys, e.g. 3u spaces, second 2.25u Shift and 40s keys, just to name a few), which makes it a non-starter for me. Please consider including those keys.

I don’t understand how this name fits with the rest of the set in any way: Ada Lovelace had no recorded interaction with Veuve Clicquot, Dieter Rams, the Americans with Disabilities Act, or this radioactive hue of orange.

Can I simply put a random name on a set and claim it commemorates a person? Please look for GMK Pauli Murray in Q1 2026. It will celebrate quantum physics, British tennis, the color green, and a civil rights pioneer

Add a novelty kit with a blue and white wheelchair key and im in for all kits. Maybe a yellow and black wet floor sign too.

Whats this about computer programming now?

Hey! I'm revising the kitting and designing a few novelties. I won’t have a novelty kit, but I’d like to include maybe two novelties in the base kit. I want to make an update with those changes, but they are still on the works.

Thanks for the feedback, I've added those keys for a wider 65-75% support. I will see if the base kit will need a trim if the price is too high, but that would need to be addressed with the vendors.

Good novelties

Punch card novs in the 2020 era coulda been an alt f row or XT columns but this works for the current era

in the current market the current kitting might end up being very, very expensive.
windowed caps, extended numpad compat, true hhkb, 40s, 3Us and novelties could very well be separated into an extension kit.

Tariffs and weak dollar, this is 160-165$?

Extension kits aren’t exactly selling well either. There’s no great answer here.

Tariffs and weak dollar, this is 160-165$?
which is getting beyond reasonable for a basekit imo

Extension kits aren’t exactly selling well either.
exactly why I always suggest making one. it's a way to remove non vital stuff from the basekit and slightly increase the chances for it to actually exist by asking a slightly lower price for it.
MOQ for extension kits is 100, safe to say those keys can be sacrificed if not even 100 people in the world are interested in buying them. there's 15 to 20 keys in there that can be removed without losing anything in physical coverage

Splitting the base kit would indeed bring the price down a little, but after talking with my main vendor, which will most likely be NovelKeys (not official yet) they mentioned that child kit sales have been pretty bad in recent runs. They actually recommended going with a bigger base kit.

If I were to split the set into a base kit and a child kit, the child kit would probably end up costing more than just including those keys in the base kit, because of the lower MOQ. We’ll see how the pricing turns out, and if needed, we might trim it down, but making a child kit probably won’t happen.

Is there a reason why the R4 modifiers aren’t icons? The alternate R3 Control is an icon, but the regular Control is text. Rather all icons or all text / icons personally.

Personal design choice mainly, there are many sets like that, the R3 Control is just to maintain consistency throughout the mods.

I don't think I will be including that into the kitting, my goal is to get as much coverage in the main kit without it being extremely expensive. If i go from having only the base kit to base kit + extension kit I will consider it.
