July 28, 2025: IC Launched

•••

This is a passion project of mine that I was disappointed I couldn't make happen before. I've spent the past eight months slowly retooling it in the hopes that it will work out better in SA, since all of the needed legends already exist. So let's try this again...

History and Inspiration

Not my photos.

SA Selectresque is an IBM Selectric-esque design, based on the famous bright blue IBM Selectric I "NASA" colorway. The Selectric series of typewriters was extremely popular; by 1978, it accounted for 94% of the business market. Selectrics used interchangeable rotating typeballs instead of bars for each key, so they weren't prone to jamming if two keys were struck simultaneously.

The Selectric's keyboard was also used for IBM terminals of the era, such as the 2741. Those eventually evolved into the beamspring keyboards of the 1970's, with which the Selectric's caps were compatible. Its layout was the direct ancestor of that used by the later Model M, which became the standard US layout still used today.

Legend has it the colorful blue caps were discontinued because they were considered too fun for office workers. But now they're back, in pog SA form!

There have been a lot of sets over the years inspired by the Selectric, but they've all been "Modern Selectric" variants, with icon mods, multicolor designs, and contemporary legend placement. This set isn't meant as a rebuke of those, I just think there's room for a more historically accurate Selectric reproduction alongside them.

Kitting and Pricing
Base price is estimated based on MSRP at MOQs of 50, 75, and 100 units, and is subject to change. (Price drops above 100 units are less dramatic, and won't make as much of a difference.)

Base Kit
~$140-149

Including UK ISO in the base actually lowers its price! The base includes some extras like stepped Ctrl, 1u and 2u Shift, and dual 1.5u OS mods. There's also basic 40s support.

"Code" was the modifier used on the Selectric Composer, the only model to have a modifier key. It was also used on the Selectric's successor, the Wheelwriter.

I've left out non-homing F, J and 5 since this set doesn't have any alternate layout support. If you really need those, tell me in the feedback form. Past sets like Skyriter, Handarbeit, 8010, and Dualshot have left them out to reduce costs.

Numpad Kit
~$28-30

Bars Kit
~$15-19

The price of the standalone bars kit is about the same as the cost increase the base would see had the bars been rolled into there. Doing it this way saves money for anyone who doesn't need it, while not really costing any more for folks who do.

"The Lost Keys" Minikit
~$10-11

The "Lost Keys" is meant to be a cheap little bundle of stuff cut from the base to achieve this price point, along with a few other niceties. There's normal versions of the weird 1, 6, and  [ ] keys; some alternates; an "Overstrike" text novelty; Spanish Ρ; and Qwertz Z/Y. Not comprehensive by any means, but hopefully something to make the set a bit more fun and useful for some folks.

"Oops! All Interrobangs‽" Kit
~$7

The lone row 1 interrobang in the base is in memory of a friend, to whom this set is dedicated. Then folks on Discord asked for full interrobang XT columns. A fistful of interrobangs would have absolutely thrilled my friend, so I said what the heck; if it helps get this set made, let's try it.

There are questions about other kits in the feedback form. Want full 40's, NorDe, or an accent row? Show vendors there's a demand for it!

Legend Sources
More
Most of the legends are pulled directly from the original Selectric. The section/paragraph and exponent keys come from the 96-character variant. "Exp" (express backspace) comes from the Selectric II and III.

The remaining non-Selectric legends come from the Wheelwriter, or other period electric typewriters.

I know the UK keys aren't remotely authentic. The real UK Selectric layout featured 18 different keys, mostly fraction symbols that ceased to be useful after the decimalization of the pound.

A Word About MTNU Selectresque...
More
For this to succeed, I need to address why MTNU Selectresque failed. And that's pretty much all on me.

First, the design required a lot of legends that didn't exist in MTNU, and would have been costly to create. ALL of these already exist in Signature Plastics's archive, meaning they add nothing to the price here.

Second, I was unfairly impatient with Jae, who was busy with other projects, since Selectresque was still months away when I got frustrated and canceled it. We're cool, and he's carried all of my sets since. In retrospect I should have been way more chill, disappointing as it was that a lot of what I wanted to do just wasn't feasible in MTNU.

Thanks
In memory of Bat Duffy, noted interrobang enthusiast.

More
Thank you to the folks in my Discord server, the SPKeyboards Discord's design ideas channel, and the Keyboard Designers Forum Discord. All of these spaces provided valuable input on the development of this set over the past eight months. Special thanks to MadMax13 for supporting me during this run and during the Teletype group buy, which is successfully wrapping up as I post this.

Thank you to Melissa at SP, whom I've pestered for quotes and legend lookups repeatedly.

I'd also like to thank everyone who supported the original MTNU version, especially Jae at ProtoTypist.

I feel like now I need to find a board that works with this bright blue... can't decide if something like a silver works or if it needs to be something completely opposite

I think E-Coated White might work too!

Yay, thank you everyone! I didn't peek back here after posting yesterday; believe me when I say I've been staring at this IC for almost a week straight making sure everything in it was correct, so I took the night off. Glad to see such a positive reaction so far!

I feel like both the profile and legends of MTNU fail to capture that vintage look. GLWIC!

Thanks! The MTNU font is really close, being itself inspired by IBM caps. But I underestimated how expensive new legends are in that profile, and it's so new that there's no big library of them to draw from. New colors are also pricey. SP has thousands of real vintage legend plates from that era, plus a large collection of stock blues, with multiple color chips that match up well. I didn't like canceling the MTNU run, I just realized it wasn't going to be very, well, Selectric-esque had it moved forward.

Part of going with MTNU at the time was that SP's future was up in the air, as they hadn't announced a buyer yet. I had two other sets I'd pitched to them (Dasher Nights and SMRT) that were in limbo, so adding a third didn't seem wise. Things have settled down dramatically in the past year, and they're pretty busy again. I've run four SP sets now, and feel comfortable they're not going anywhere.

People were also up in arms over their pricing back then. But the $145ish base here is on par with smaller base kits in the past that were manufactured in much higher quantities. Spectra in 2021 had a smaller alpha/mod combo, and over 400 sets made, yet was a few bucks more expensive. The price doesn't drop as dramatically over 100 units, but if 250 were made, it'd be around $132 retail.

Got the pricing for the interrobangs kit, looks like it'd be around $7 or so!

Since this is a R3 bottom row SA set, I'd like to see R3 Up moved to the base kit. You can drop R4 1u Shift since the R4 1u Set key already covers for it, and GK64-style layouts (the only ones that use 2u and 1u Shift) are rare outside of East Asia. As an added bonus, R3 Up in conjunction with R4 Set can be used as a substitute for R3 PgUp, R4 PgDn for 65% layouts without needing to purchase the extensions kit.

Edit: I've noticed that this set is altogether missing a second 2.25u Shift for 660-style layouts. I suggest either:
1) adding it to the extensions kit;
2) adding it to base and moving the 2u Shift from base to extensions, since I'm pretty sure that 660 is still more popular than GK64; or
3) putting both 2.25u and 2u Shift in extensions.

Are you suggesting to add an Extensions kit? I don't think there is one at the moment.

I was referring to this one, sorry if it wasn't clear (probably should've quoted the OG post in my reply). This for all intents and purposes fulfills the role of an extensions kit:

Half my boards are 64-key ones with 2u shift! I like 60% layout but desperately need my arrow keys.

Ah, I see. I've always thought of Extensions kits as containing a lot of non-1u mods.

Makes sense if it comes down to designer personal preference, I'm never going to argue against that ;) Do keep the other suggestions in mind, though.

P.S. Have you tried the YAS62 layout? I have it on one of my 60% SKB/HMKBs and I enjoy it quite a bit — you get the arrow keys and a regular stagger with normal keycap compatibility (no 2u Shift). I treat it like an HHKB with arrow keys; pretty useful.

I shall! Everything is up for potential change. I want to make sure I'm doing whatever it takes to make sure this gets made as long as it doesn't completely dilute the theme, and none of this would.

And no, I haven't tried that layout, but I'll look at it! I have a couple boards where I'm using ISO left Shift and then have the question mark to the right of the 1.75u right Shift to accommodate the arrows. It's manageable, but I always pause for a moment when I need the question mark, like "hey, where did it go?"

For folks filling out the form and indicating support for an accent row kit, here's some renders of the suggested colors so far:

BFR navy blue

NN black

RCR pink

WFK white

(Ignore the legend on the F13 key, there won't be two Mar Rel keys, I just had the wrong legend file loaded.)

Black is my fav because it's reminiscent of IBM's beamsprings of the era. But white would be the cheapest option, since it keeps the color count at two.

Someone asked for grey alphas, but I'm worried that would basically be Space Cadet.
