We’re Fusion Lab, and we’d like to introduce VS9009 R2, the second project in our Vintech series.
Earlier this year, we made a small batch of our first 9009. Some of you may have seen photos of those builds. We were happy to bring the idea to life, but the available screen dimensions kept us from fully achieving the design we had in mind.
For R2, we’ve revisited the display, internal structure, PCB assemblies, and exterior details. This first IC introduces the revised design, and we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Where it startedCHERRY G80-9009, a keyboard built for Reuters terminals. Its large layout, extensive function keys, and distinctive LCD area gave it a character all its own.
We like how clearly it reflects the work it was designed for. The separate key clusters and built-in screen form an interface you rarely see on a keyboard today.
Many of us recognize 9009 through its familiar keycap colors: beige and grey, with muted green and pink accents. We wanted to bring back more of the keyboard behind those colors, including its proportions, layout, and screen.
The original CHERRY G80-9009
The idea behind VS9009Our goal is to recreate the character of the original G80-9009 as a modern custom keyboard, with an aluminum case, redesigned internals, and a usable secondary display.
We’ve paid particular attention to the broad upper section, the spacing between key clusters, and the contours along the sides. These details are a large part of what makes the original recognizable.
It’s a big keyboard, and that scale is part of its appeal.
What’s new in R2?R2 includes changes both inside and out:
Redesigned internals: a revised mounting assembly and case cavity.
New PCB assemblies: expanded functionality and layout support.
A larger custom display: proportions that more closely match the original screen area.
Refined exterior details: updated side profiles and case features for a more faithful appearance.
The displayThe screen is a central part of VS9009.
R2 uses a custom high-resolution, 60 Hz display with multipoint capacitive touch. It works as a secondary monitor, built into the long display area above the keys.
This builds on our experience integrating keyboards and displays in Vision75, AG500, and VS06.
The keyboard, display, solenoid, and buzzer are designed to run through a single USB 2.0 data cable. The display does not need a separate HDMI cable or power cable, and the connection does not require Thunderbolt or a USB-C port with video output.
Mounting and layoutVS9009 R2 offers two mounting options:
Top mount with a brushed stainless steel plate.
Plateless top mount for soldered builds.
Both the hot-swap and solder PCBs are 1.6 mm thick and support the same layouts. The upper 2u key positions can also accommodate two 1u keys.
The total key count is approximately 150, depending on the layout you choose.

Case and manufacturingThe case is machined from 6063 aluminum using our own five-axis CNC equipment. We handle both the design and machining in-house.
Five-axis machining helps us preserve the case’s angled surfaces and continuous contours while reducing the need to divide exterior features into separate parts.
The case will have a powder-coated finish.
Color optionsOur initial color options focus on neutral tones that suit the original terminal aesthetic.
