Is this just the way Cherry keyboards feel?
« on: Mon, 13 December 2010, 23:12:06 »
I finally used my MX11900.  Took a while to clean it out.  Missing one of the pieces of a stabilizer... the plastic cross-point insert, so I made do.  Too bad I bought this way too long ago to do anything about it with the seller.  The way I rigged it and the key I put it on make it barely noticeable.

Anyway, this is Cherry Black, and I should hate it.  I only got this keyboard because it was cheap.

This is great.
A little tough, but overall, I can't believe it.

I'm thinking about swapping in some lighter springs or something, but all that aside, I think this might be my new daily driver.  Too bad, wallet.

I can't be in love with Cherry Black though (out of context hilarity)... it might just be the way this board is constructed.  I'm trying to ignore the excellence of the keycaps, but still feel there's something I'm missing.

I just feel like this wouldn't be the same on a Filco.  Do the Cherry-branded Blue/Brown boards feel so much different compared to the Filcos?

I don't want to unwrap my Ricercar SPOS because I know I'll hate the layout and wish I didn't un-NIB it.

i always feel that their switch is kinda lighter then filco/das/ducky.
switch to switch compare like cherry blue vs filco blue. i always feel cherry blue on cherry kb are lighter. i don't know why, maybe because of the caps. or myself

Black switches are awesome. All those wussies that claim otherwise are just not manly enough to handle these awesome switches. Blacks have been my favorite switches for a while now.

So you should not be surprised if you like them, they are a good switch if you give them some time. Like a good horse they need to be ridden in at first... or something.

I don't think it's just your problem. Trying not to bottom out with no tactile feedback at all seems tedious, and I challenge anyone to type this way for a length of time without missing keystrokes.

The springs are too stiff to bottom out hard anyways, so it's still quiet. Probably a bit worse on a platemounted keyboard.

Of course, otherwise the type-bar won't hit the paper hard enough
and you get blurry characters with bad contrast  ! ...

^That's why I'd love to try out Clear switches. I just can't seem to find a modern keyboard with those switches, especially plate-mounted and with an ISO layout.

Deck Legend Tactile boards use Cherry Clear switches that are plate-mounted.

But I agree about the cherry blacks....I absolutely love them....just butter smooth. Even typing on them feels natural now.

Filcos feel similar, main difference is when you bottom out you're not hitting PCB you're hitting plate, which jars the fingers a bit and dosen't sound or feel as nice.  The think is with the ricercar SPOS it actually feels significantly nicer than the usual out of box MX11800.  My main gripe with the layout was the tilda key and I had to remap with autohotkey.  If you liked the MX11800 you'll probably love the feel of the ricercar spos..
My keyboards: Filco Cherry Blue Tenkeyless(daily home), Compaq MX11800 (modded to blacks), Compaq "MX 84u",  Wellington\'s Dampened Endurapro, Pinkalicious Filco Blue Cherry, Chicony KB-5191, Chicony KB-5181, Desko MOS 5023 UP "elbowglue" spos (modded to blues), Siig Minitouch (monterey blue), SMK-88 (blue cherries), Ricercar SPOS

Is there a utility to make a click from the speaker when you press a key? The optional click on my Kinesis Contour taught me not to bottom out the Cherry browns. I'd love a similar experience for my Cherry black 1190x.

I, too, can help with an extra stabilizer or stabilizer wire.
I trolled Geekhack and all I got was an eponymous SPOS.

I'd hate to bother someone with the postage to mail one small piece of plastic.  But I appreciate the concern and will think about bothering anyway.  I guess the PayPal fees wouldn't be too high on sending 40 cents.

If you go way back in the Sounds forum, you can find one of Welly's earliest posts about a program like this.  Moreover, I think there are some .wav files there to customize the clicking sound.
