This is on a Razer Tarantula. I also type in my own style where I don't use my pinkies except for left shift, enter and backspace. I keep my left middle finger on "w," my left ring finger on "a," and my left index finger on "d." My right hand just sits wherever it pleases. ^_^

I never really learned to type; my hands cross over from side to side and my technique is generally a mess. Just many years of programming. I did the test with a stock aluminum Mac Pro keyboard.

I think this improvised meta typing game would be a lot more fun if we each did one round on the ****tiest keyboard we could find and then did one round on our daily driver.

oh btw, check nocturn4l3030 @ post #25

I'd rank by the "score" number.  You could get a lot of two letter words or something and it would look faster than it really was.  The score probably factors both the character count and WPM.

^^not everyone posts the picture with the score on there so i wouldnt be able to discriminate the other ranks, but i see your point, if you play it long enough you will eventually get one of those rounds that has a lot of two letter words and what not

I just tried typeracer.com, but the countdown starts before it's even ready to start accepting keystrokes. I have to click on the box, wait a few seconds, start typing and still it misses the first character and says I have a typo.

You shouldn't need to click the box, it should disappear on its own and the cursor should default into the typing box.  If not, it's probably a browser issue.  Which do you use?

I tried that when I got an ASUS Netbook and I was really bemoaning the shrunken nature of the netbook keys. Well, it turns out that as much as I hated that keyboard, it barely affected my speed test results. I was 100+ before. I was 100+ after.

I had 92 on a Model M versus 102 on a Topre, big difference was missed words, more typos on the Model M when trying to type fast.

God, I'm studying for board exams and I'm spending way too much time messing around.  Things I normally don't like to do get done, and once that's finished I move on to more useless tasks.  No wonder why the girlfriend says the house is cleanest when I'm studying ;)

I tried a few more times and it looks like I don't have to click in the box, but I still have problems with the first character typed being ignored. I think it is a browser problem. I see a box that says, "Warning Something unexpected just happened. You may need to Refresh the browser page if TypeRacer stops working."

I'm using Firefox 5 on OSX 10.5 (PPC).

I'm using a french dvorak layout and actually, I'm slower with the french test.
That makes me believe that they count words as… well, real words, while they shouldn't (wikipedia link above).
French words are longer, that makes sense.

It sucks, as a test, sorry.

2nd try I got 95 wpm / 100% correct words (but not 100% accuracy for I did typo I could correct).  With some caffeine I could probably reach 100 on that test (on typeracer I reached 120 several times).

118 wpm, 654 cpm, 503 points
(tried the English version too and while most of the words seem to be easier to type (mainly because of the lack of capitalized ones), I still only scored ~100 wpm)
all done on my new and lovely Zowie Celeritas

FWIW... I hate the switching from one block of words to the next the test does, the first times I tried, I kept re-entering the same word because it kept confusing me
