Maybe it's just me...

But I don't quite see the big deal about a shiny spacebar.

I recall a time when Ripster didn't either.

Does the 87U come in an all 55g version? I would be interested in getting one if Elite Keyboards will carry that.

My life has been crazy the past few weeks, so this was a nice piece of good news to stumble upon.

Will probably pounce on a 45g 87U when you land one of those stateside.

Leopold has it but I don't think Elitekeyboards can get a hold of it due to it being a custom Topre run for Leopold.

Rumor was it was some large Korean corporate standard to have 55g keyboards.  Sounds like one of those flakey Internet rumors like Cherry Reds being smuggled into Filco factories in Christopher Walken's ass.

Bummer, I hope that that is not the case and Elite Keyboards can get an uniform 55g 87U. I have no interest in an uniform 45g. The 55g seems to feel so much better.

People tend to want things that are not available or hard to find.  I am one of them.  IBM Space Saver, IBM Model M Industrial, IBM M15, Cherry MX 5000, Filco tenkeyless with Cherry red switches, white Filco tenkeyless of any kind, etc.

87U was not available in any version in the US after the initial batch of 87U from EK.  Now EK is carrying the variable version again, people look for the versions that are not available.

I think Brian has already said that other versions will be available later.  Sit tight :-)

Nice. Can you compare it with a non-silent model?
Does it have less key travel before the actuation?

I think the foam ring on the plunger reduces the key travel before activation.
Can you confirm this?

As for the 87U uniform and silent models inquiries above; there will be multiple uniform models down the line (how soon I can't say) and the silencing does not affect the downstroke, only the sound of the key as it springs back into place.

It seems that information is incorrect, and the silencing does affect the downstroke by reducing the key travel before actuation by 0.2 mm.

A useful addition on this matter.

Quote from: skwan;396289
Just bought one from there, and shipped to me last week, still testing it out, but so far liking it, feels tamer than the pro 2, at first didn't notice the loss of travel, but now that i have typed on it a little, i can feel the difference, as for whether the type s really stands for speed or just advertising hocus pocus, i need some more time before i can safely comment on that.

I am just waiting until i can get someone to help me do a blindfold/ear muff test to see if i can feel the difference between with or without type S. I wish i can get a real force low noise in for the test as well, but i can't afford 3 topres...

Oh btw i noticed people were moaning about pinging, my type S has a slight ping on the space bar, i tried taking it apart and knocking on the various parts, and the high pitch ring seems to come from the key cap itself (try hitting the key cap with the case or other key caps the noise is surprisingly high pitch)... not a big issue, but being a type S, that is the most prominent noise the keyboard makes... My pro 2 has the same problem (a much worse case of it) some time after a few weeks use of it, it lost the nice thock on the space bar, and is now giving a very mechanical sound, and its weird because the noise is made when typed with my right thumb, but not with my left thumb, tried taking the thing apart and messed with it for ages to no avail..

brief note on impression so far (only 1.5 weeks of use), feels more linear with the loss of the little bit of travel at the top, especially noticeable when typing at high speed, unlike the brown (never tried any other MX cherries so cannot compare with blue etc) the faster you type the lower the tactile, i feet that the pro 2's tactile response doesn't go away with speed, if i may use a metaphor, it is kinda like slappaing water, the faster you hit it, the more forceful the response. So the type s loses alittle bit of that, i never even realised that until i tried the type s, and then tried to compare it back to the pro 2.  With all that said the difference is minimal, and it is much more accurate to say that it is just the pro 2 with less noise topping out, as expected, as advertised.

Another thing i noted, if you just run your fingers lightly over the keytops on the pro 2, it makes a noise (like all keyboards would), and i was thinking the type S wouldn't (or at least less), but it doesn't damp that noise, it makes the same noise, the only noise damped is when the key is coming up, not sure how this is relevant in day to day use, but it is something i noted.

It's probably the same as the O-Ring Cherry MX mod.  About .2mm less travel so it's not much but you know it's there.

I think it is more than just .2mm difference.

It is not necessary, as it seems there is not much demand for the black variable models.
The new fad is the silent, white, or uniform weighted models.

I sold 2 87u's for $200 and $225 last year.  Paid nearly that for one this year... because it's white.  Silly I know but ever since seeing the tea picture below and watching the asian lady type on one on youtube I've been itching for one.

I don't really care about the silent vs regular thing.  So far it's really fun to type on but I can't say how much I like it for at least a couple of weeks.  It takes me that long to get used to Topres and start utilizing the capacitive switches instead of bottoming out on boobs.  This time around might be faster to adjust because I have been using Cherry browns at work and capacitive bs at home.

I find myself squinting to find keys when doing keyboard shortcuts for coding with my 86UB.  And here I was thinking about getting an all blank board.  Now I'm wishing I got an 86U instead.  :)  But I'll live... I do like the look of the black better.

At least they are always very responsive when you have an issue about an actual order. It's easy to understand why they would not be forthcoming about new products since it could potentially make their current stock harder to sell.

I probably asked them 3 or 4 times what specific model they would carry later this summer, and never got an answer either. At lest they did not tell me to bugger off...

87UB came in the mail today. :)  Very pleased with the quality of the keyboard.  Also like the fact it "thocks" but isn't annoyingly loud like my cherry blues.  Surprisingly, Topres feel exactly how I expected them to feel.  I also like the variable weighting...It feels natural and I don't notice it unless I really look for it.  Wish I would have jumped on the wagon during the first round when these were available. Overall really happy with the purchase and glad I didn't compromise and get the 86UB.

Even though the space bar is shorter than the original, it still looks pretty good. I had figure that if I bought a set for my 86UB, I would not swap out the original space bar but now I think I may since it looks ok with the shorter space bar of the 87Us.

I tried it with the original black space bar, but visually it's even weirder, because it looks like somebody took a bite out of the nice rectangular mass of orange and red. Stabilizers line up fine with the shorter space bar, so I guess I'll just use a canned air duster to clean out the two new crevices.

I'm not disagreeing, just endlessly wrestling with my OCD nature.

Also, apparently I should have bought an extra key puller. Guess I got lucky I didn't break the stabilizers Ripster-style while pulling out the original long space bar. At least now I have much easier access to the sides of the short space bar without removing the Alt's.

What's the general consensus nowadays: reverse the space bar a-la Sensitive Thumbs RiGS or use the default orientation; remove the spring under it or keep it?

Congrats on the keycaps.  The keyboard looks great!

But I'm having a serious "WTF!?!?" moment here.  Towards Topre, not you.

I've got an 87UB that is currently wearing yellow caps from the group buy.  And a set of red lettered caps just arrived today from EK.  Not sure what I'm going to do with them yet, but when I saw them awailable I had to have them LOL

When I bought these sets I just assumed that they would match perfectly to a 103.  I mean, all the keycaps for the tenkeypad are there.  And since the spacebar that came with the colored keycaps matches the 87U (not the 86U), I just made the additional assumption that the space bar on the 103 must be the same as on the 87.  I obviously never looked at the 103 that closely.

So what the hell is Topre thinking?  They have a set of keycaps that's mostly for the 103 except the spacebar isn't?  It's obviously not for a TKL since all the extra keycaps are there.  And it's also not quite for the 87U since it doesn't have the correct swapped Control/Capslock keys without/with windows.

So what Topre keyboard are these sets a perfect match for?  Or is there not one?

The idea of using the proper-sized black space bar, or the shorter colored spacebar would both trigger my OCD.  I'm not sure which one would trigger it more.  I guess I'll find out if/when I buy a 103.

For the 87u or the 104u. The title at EK says it :p.

I've got an 87UB that is currently wearing yellow caps from the group buy.  And a set of red lettered caps just arrived today from EK.  Not sure what I'm going to do with them yet

Congrats on the keycaps.  The keyboard looks great!

My understanding was that these sets were for the 104s and 87s, but without the possibility of swapping Control / Capslock keys on the 87s. They do have two versions of Num lock / Caps lock / Control keys already, one for 104s, one for 87s, so I guess Topre decided to cut corners and not include the third version for the reversed 87s. Queue Ripster rant about lazy Topre engineers.
