The envelope with the prototype Enter key arrived today .... without the prototype.

The envelope shows signs of tampering, and there is a slit cut in the bottom of the plastic baggie inside.  Pretty sure that spells shenanigans from a postal employee or something.

I've emailed Melissa about it, we'll see what she says.

How dare they steal our prototypes! :fencing:

Why would anyone want to steal something like that anyways?

Was it a bubble mailer?  Maybe they were hoping it was something else.

No.  It was a standard unpadded envelope with a single first-class stamp on it.  This is also very frustrating.

Yeah, I know.  Melissa says that she has sent out dozens of prototype keys this way with no issues, but still.  A bubble mailer would be nice for something that costs $65.

Lolwat. I can understand let’s open random letters, I even understand Oh cash/a rolex, gonna keep it, but opening a letter and keeping useless junk?

That guy probably dropped the key and was too lazy to pick it up again, since no one would bother about some random old key that someone put into the letter as an obvious joke.

A $65 piece of junk lol.

Not sure which is more ridiculous, the key getting lost/stolen or the price that SP charges for a single prototype.

To be fair, they have to create the mold and set up their machinery to run a single key.  This slows down other much larger orders that are in the queue for the same machinery.  It's not unreasonable.

Probably should report it to your local Post Office.  They take this type of thing seriously.  Postal plants have setups to allow the floor workers to be observed anonymously.

You should tell Melissa to get the arrow head right this time.  Also, I would estimate that a .018" cutter was used for the original Cherry DS, and SP's proto used a .015" cutter resulting in extra space between the characters.  I am aware that the hole in the little 'e' is the problem, but hey, Cherry was able to pull it off.

Anyways, IMO the tiny arrow head is the most important issue to correct; I can live with the skinny lettering and arrow shaft (especially if the kerning is slightly tightened up to compensate).  I suppose expecting perfection would be akin to expecting a Pontiac to perform like a Porsche...

Here are pics of a real Cherry DS and the SP Enter proto for reference:

I'll be comparing the (new) prototype against a real Cherry enter key in detail as soon as I receive it.  The biggest takeaway I think is that we should probably compress the letters a bit to make up for the thinner line width.  The tiny detail in the lowercase 'e' is the biggest constraint on line width I believe.

The size of the arrow has nothing to do with Melissa.  It is all specified in the SVG which is entirely under my control.

It was delivered to my work, so I'll have to figure out which post office to hassle.  It's possible of course that someone in my mailroom did it.  But I trust those guys.

Oh jeez, I didn't realize how much got rolled back.

I asked Melissa about the tiny arrowhead on the Enter prototype, and she responded by telling me she's having the legend guys recut it.  This to me means that the small arrow was a screw-up and not a result of something being wrong with the SVG or the instructions I gave her.  Hopefully I should have the new key in hand by the end of this coming week.

I expect the actual "Enter" text to be unchanged on the new prototype, so I'm adjusting the other SVGs based on the comparison of the prototype to a real Cherry Enter key.  Specifically, the text should be slightly taller.  I'll also ask Melissa if making the text bigger allows us to use a thicker cutter, which would match the Cherry keys a bit better.

tldr: We are waiting on a third(!) Enter prototype.  This sucks and delays the order, but I think it's worth it to increase confidence in the look of the final keys.

Yes.  The first one was lost or stolen, and both the first and second had the tiny arrow, which was apparently a screw-up rather than an SVG issue.

The R1 modifiers are SP's standard WYSE font.  I think the alphanum keys probably are as well, just big and centered.  Regardless, it was all stock SP legends, nothing custom.

For reference, here's the old key since the rollback ate the last time I posted it.  Melissa said she'll mail me the new one tomorrow.  She confirmed that the text is unchanged.
