talking about the color, I'm kinda disappointed with what I got, I expected the wood to be the old black ebony like what in the pictures on Massdrop, but it ends up with the Indonesian ebony tho.
Before I got this one, I would recommend you the ebony, but in this case I would say give a shot on the rosewood, like the one DrHubblePhD has posted here https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=33130.29310

Nice one!  Congratulations :)
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Nothing in the mail today, but it's time to catch up with all of my previous recent mail days since there was a bit of light today.  :thumb:

EXCUSE MY MESS OF WIRES AND OTHER JUNK, I have too much stuff on one desk.  :blank:

More

First off we have the WKL Phantom I purchased from DrHubblePHD. I had a long wait before I received the board, so he was kind enough to include a lot of extra stuff. It originally came in one big bag that said 'DrHubblePHD's most amazing mod kit'. Lots of great stuff in there to get me started.  :thumb:

First thing I did was spring swap (55g gold Sprit springs) and lube the MX blacks in the Phantom, and put the 62g Gateron Clear I was given by Zeal on the esc switch.

Still a lot of work for me to do on this board, it needs to be fully taken apart and the Teensy de-soldered and pushed in tight to the PCB to fit it into my Vortex alu case. The left windows key doesn't work either, but I have no clue what's wrong with it as I swapped the switch out for a known good one, and still no response.

Thanks Hubble!  :thumb:

My recently acquired soldering gear, I've been enjoying learning how to solder.. I'm still a noob but hopefully I will become confident in my abilities.  :))

My Vortex aluminum Filco case, and my QFR MX reds with Frosty Flake V2. It has no caps at the moment, but it should have a nice set on it soon. Planning for this to be my first fully modded by myself board. I ordered another top case to be painted, and I'm looking for a uTKL plate before I de-solder it all and tune the switches.

More

A Blue Slushy Lion Keyng and polycarb spacebars I received from Hoff. I was given these for no charge, because Hoff is a really nice guy.  ;D

And last but not least, I received a JD40 with MX reds as a gift from JD. I had mentioned in the CtrlAlt advent give away thread that if I had won the JD40 kit, I was going to build it and give it to my girlfriend as a present. A couple days later, JD PM'd me offering to build one for her at no charge. I received the board just a few days before Valentines day and I gave it to her as a Valentines gift. She is currently loving it, she uses it mostly for gaming.

I am pretty blown away by the generosity JD has shown to two complete strangers. It goes to show the special type of community we have here at GeekHack. I don't have any pictures as the board is at my girlfriends house and I still haven't taken pictures of it with my GF yet. But if you read this JD, a (really, really) big thank you from Dakota and Brandi.  :thumb:

I live in Canada, so I have to pay a bit extra. Shipping is killer on the Hakko station, the only place I could find reasonable shipping was eBay. $12 shipping, plus $10 or so in import taxes. Everywhere else wanted $50ish to ship it to Canada.

In total, $130USD for the Hakko FX888D (that includes an extra tip I bought from the same seller, which was $10), $20 for the Soldapullt which I got direct from Edsyn. Edsyn has a $25USD minimum order though, so I picked up the tweezers and a roll of de-soldering braid. That came to $35 after shipping. The Hakko flush cutters came with the Hakko station as a free gift from the eBay seller.

Side note, I really recommend some nice tweezers, they've come in really handy for all sorts of fine work.

Get an FX888D, since Weller changed their manufacturer I don't like the station any more. The new one I had at work was replaced with an old one after only a few days due to large fluctuations in temp.
People in the 1980s, in general, were clearly just better than we are now in every measurable way.

The dumber the reason the more it must be done

I'm a noob, but I recommend the FX888D too. It's been really easy to work with. It heats up fast, and the temperature seems to stay rock solid.

:thumb:

:thumb: :D

Odd, though, about the Phantom. It was fully functional when I built it, but you're the third owner since then... I hope you get it working.

Or, just wait until there is something of comparable quality available to the community here.

Impossible. Who could make such a thing?

And last but not least, I received a JD40 with MX reds as a gift from JD. I had mentioned in the CtrlAlt advent give away thread that if I had won the JD40 kit, I was going to build it and give it to my girlfriend as a present. A couple days later, JD PM'd me offering to build one for her at no charge. I received the board just a few days before Valentines day and I gave it to her as a Valentines gift. Interesting to know you originally built it, that makes two boards in my possession that you originally built.  :thumb:  I was told by the person I bought my JD40 from that you built it as well.

I think this Phantom has seen a lot of work done to it, the PCB looks like it's seen its' fair share of solders.

Do you mind if I PM you with a question about the Phantom?

Typing this on my Déck Legend again. Forgot how nice the Clears on this board are...

Anyway. Got a Crucial MX100 256GB SSD to replace the first generation OCZ Vertex that kept corrupting my Windows. Although it could be the sata cable as well. Damn thing cost me the entire day to even boot. That's what you get with old hardware.

Other than that I managed to order some Hotkeys and an TX1800 plate + PCB. Can't afford the whole setup atm but I'll be damned if I let a modern, backlit, switch-top-removable 1800 slip.  ;D
