Full-tuned vintage browns (and a clear) from GON:

how does vintage browns feel compared with modern browns???

Also interested to know this, GON is currently pricing shipping for me on some!

For starters, the tactile bump on the vintage browns is noticeably smoother than the modern browns on my Shine II...perhaps due to the wear on the switch stem and / or the spring?

The switches from GON are also lubed so it might be the lube...I don't have lubed modern browns to compare them against.

I also have to swap out the blues on my QFR for the vintage browns...I'll most likely be able to draw better conclusions after that.

I never understand how to "swap" switches, do you desolder the old switches and solder in the new ones?

Oh nice! Let us know how that mouse goes. If I didn't already have 2 mice I was using on the same computer, I definitely would have snagged one of those for $10.

@tadbitnerdy - i know feeling of  getting a crap load of water cooling parts at once, i love that feeling. Good luck with the build!

---

So yesterday i got a 1991 model m in almost new condition except for the back, it was cleaned up and im typing on it now, i think it is great. http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=33130.msg956314#msg956314

but today i just got in my $20 special from ebay (this sale http://www.ebay.com/itm/271220957108?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649)

holy crap, this keyboard is from hell, it smells like mold and its covered in dirt, it says its made in 1995 (newer than my good one) in the UK (wasn't expecting that), and that the auction description says RJ45 but the connector i got is a PS/2 (also wasn't expecting that), the cable goes into the board and is not dis-connectable like my other one. i guess that is ok--it may make the soarer converter easier.

considering it is missing a cap, i might as well just buy a replacement set from unicomp, maybe in gray instead of pebble/pearl. then i can focus on cleaning the keyboard and not worry about the caps. oh god this is going to be an adventure.

Tym certainly doesn't sound like someone who would run around having people beheaded or shooting hookers with crossbows anyway  :p

I told my 6-year-old if he could learn proper touch typing, he could have his own keyboard.  He's not fast, but perfect technique.  :)  His caps came in today.  Filco with Reds isn't a bad first keyboard for a young boy.

v2 of the keychain from techkeys.

I originally got my v1 directly from whoever makes them (forgot their name, sorry dude!)

But the build quality wasn't as good and the colors kinda sucked.

Comparison here

And the little piece at the back that holds the chain broke off really easily. The new one is much thicker/reinforced.

Full-tuned vintage browns (and a clear) from GON:
Show Image

how does vintage browns feel compared with modern browns???

Also interested to know this, GON is currently pricing shipping for me on some!

For starters, the tactile bump on the vintage browns is noticeably smoother than the modern browns on my Shine II...perhaps due to the wear on the switch stem and / or the spring? ???

The switches from GON are also lubed so it might be the lube...I don't have lubed modern browns to compare them against.

I also have to swap out the blues on my QFR for the vintage browns...I'll most likely be able to draw better conclusions after that.

I never understand how to "swap" switches, do you desolder the old switches and solder in the new ones?

Yes.

Unless you have a custom plate that allows for switch top removal, then you can swap the internals to try different stems and springs.

Thanks for picking up my slack Ray!  It's been a busy day at work...5 more hours to go...

@linziyi Please note that you still need to desolder all the switches in order to install the custom plate...and then solder all the switches back on.

Something purple:

And something green and white:

And some multi-coloured things:

The magenta Fn keys actually look more like a really nice shade of pink :)  And I have already lost one set of RGB power buttons to my 6yo.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada
