Played around with making a "more proper" light box with a cardboard box and gluing printer paper in in.  Still not sure I like the results.  I may need to rub wax or oil on the paper to let more diffuse light in.

damn good!  What sort of lens?

Just the 18-70mm kit lens at f/5.6.  I'd use my 50 because it's a sharper lens, but it's too hard to get in and focus with the tripod.  I need a good macro lens, but they're so damn expensive.  I could always try lens stacking, but then you can get some weird distortions.

have you tried using a white screen from your phone/tablet/laptop?  by holding a phone or tablet above, you could add the little bit of extra lighting that you want.
