Thanks!

It's been a long time coming, and I'm not disappointed :)

It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. Aah, the elusive skeletor.  I know Bro Caps wants one (or has one), even if he denies it.

@jcrouse:  Thanks for the positive words!  However, your collection dwarfs mine.  You must have by far the largest collection ever assembled.

@Bro Caps:  You're Type-S is a little bit nicer than mine.  I covet your pinks and that translucent red.  Pure awesomeness.

@tsangan:  you are the original master that inspired me to collect Clacks.  I most humbly acknowledge your greatness, and your awesome skeletor.  That GH orange and grey skull is mighty nice as well.  Would you consider a trade straight up for a Hack Orange and a Mint Gum?  I can throw in a 3-D if you act quickly.  (JK)

@ eth0s - ya know, my collection was assembled with cash, too much in many instances. However, it consists 80% of the recent and common clacks. Yours however, consists of many hard to find collectables that money can't buy. It takes time, maybe, or connections, hanging out and making friends. Personally, with how easy they were to obtain when they were first produced versus now, I don't think anyone could amass all those unique colors you have. They simply are not available and now everyone knows they are worth a fortune. Just imagine a skeltor or geek hack in an auction. Wholly chit. For me the fun now is just in slowly trying to find the rarer ones like you have. I spend little time here hanging out and don't participaye in most of the idol bro type chat, no time, so that makes it tough. Anyways, the fun is in the journey, not the destination.

Happy collecting ...

@Bro Caps:  Heh.  Well, I didn't get all of imersa's collection (although I tried).  I dunno what I did to get them, I guess we get along pretty well.  He's a pretty cool dude, and is making some awesome water cooled rigs now.  (However, I have to admit that my clever strategy of giving him many American dollars in exchange for a few bits of plastic didn't hurt, I don't think.)  And you did pretty well with DanGWang's collection from what I can tell.  :p

PM me if you have any interest in trading.  [and what are you doing way back in 1974? Is that a joke or is something off with the timestamps here?]

I admire the collections tha contain the older difficult to obtain colored clacks. With that said, ekw808 needs to be mentioned. While not a huge collection, in total quantity, it is extremely nice and contains MANY clacks ya just don't see in circulation. I love what he has put together.

When a collection reches a certain point it gets very difficult to grow. Tsangan and I have had this conversation a few times. What do you trade for the remaining ones you want? Most are owned by the six or eight other hardcore collectors. It requires other rares to get them, which you don't want to part with. Trading keyboards for them is an option but when they are valued at $200 + each it seems like a bad deal to trade a korean custom for 2, maybe 3, keycaps. For some reason, to most, even though the values may be perceived as equal, the keyboard seems like so much the more valuable and desirable item, specifically for long term ownership. There was a recent post of a clack being traded for an hhkb that got a little negative press here. While it is lots of fun, and a challange, collecting clacks, it can be frustrating missing out and seeing others, boost, tsangan, ekw808, MMB (Bro Caps) or eth0s get them. While I am very happy to see others enhance their collections, it can also be be frustrating and come with envy.

Just a few rambling thoughts,
John

Please elaborate. I know you have spoke of this mystetious club before and would be intetested in your thoughts.

I think "the club" is something that may have existed early on when clacks were being developed and cc may have, not sure, wasn't here then, distributed some of the original protos to select active forum members. Remember, clacks used to sit in stock at EK for weeks waiting to be purchased. There was no demand. I don't see this anymore and don't think this club exists, although I sort of did when I started.

It's just a pejorative term I use to describe the small group of people who trade exclusively amongst themselves and hold onto the rarer clacks thus never allowing anyone else outside of the circle even a chance at obtaining those specific models.

It's understandable, but it's basically the 1% who stay the 1% unless by some small miracle someone happens to snatch up something unobtainable from an open sale. Even then, much of the time offers are made to/from said parties before they even hit an open market. I mean I get it, but it doesn't mean I can't be mad about it.

Ok, so your mad because you don't get a chance at them. Join the club. At least you admit it. As I stated, even for the collectors you reach this point. The real problem is that you don't have anything they want. For a collector, we don't have anything we want to part with. Either way, it is difgicult if not imposdible to get them. Like the toxic, very desirable, that was traded. He wanted a translucent. Seems nobody wanted to trade theirs hence even the collectors could not get the toxic.

others, boost, tsangan, ekw808, MMB (Bro Caps) or eth0s get them.

Just a few rambling thoughts,

But you get many rare and dedirable clacks. You just trade (flip) them, as I have busted your but about before. I am waiting for the latest to be available. However, as I noted earlier, you will want something for them many collectors will not want to part with. Like the few trades you and I have attempted in the padt few months.

ill throw my 2 cents in here as i have a view somewhere between the 2 and i understand both sides

from the outside looking in, there does seem to be an elite circle, there are some poeple with incredible collections, and that would be fine, the difficulty for outsiders is seeing some people regularly post new clacks they are adding to their collection, yet at no point have some people even seen these clacks before, let alone seen them come up for sale or for trade somewhere, so this gives the impression that a lot of it is going on behind closed doors, and people have little understanding how this could happen if it werent for some sort of insider group

that being said

i am someone who is very not part of that group, and ive managed to get my hands now on some nice tri colors, the odd high tier clack and lots of low tier ones, i actually suffer from a very different issue in obtaining clacks, its the mid tier ones that i find so very elusive, they are very hard to trade for as nobody wants anything common for them, and like john says, the collectors and i myself couldnt let go of any of the really hard ones to get, and the chances of finding a nice middling clack for sale is jsut slim, they get snatched up so fast or get traded behind closed doors

i dont think there is a big conspiracy going on, there is just a little from both arguments going on above

i actually consider myself friends with a couple of the bigger collectors listed, and 1 or 2 of them have really helped me out, they didnt wanna screw me and had no reason to help me, they are just good guys, and im sure they just get such nice items by knowing everyone in the know, being nice guys and being very available to trade and purchase, i would love to be part of this non existent club, but only because it seems to be a bunch of good guys who have a similar interest in collecting something i like

i am on the grind fellas, i respect all of you and am envious as is everybody else

it is a club built on opportunity, and i hope to have more come my way
I'M IN THE PROCESS OF MOVING RIGHT NOW, WILL BE BACK AROUND SOON

Stop reselling CC's and making ignorant trades and see where it'll take you.

There are other keyboard forums besides Geekhack (really!), perhaps some trades/sales occur there.  Plus lots of GHers know each other personally, and meet face to face, which could facilitate off-forum trades.

Also I long ago gave up on getting any of the rare ones, and I don't have sufficient disposable income to afford anything other than the lowest tier.

I currently have two clacks - and I love both of them.  Getting my first skull earlier this week was a huge thrill, and that is enough for me.

If I'm lucky enough to get in on a CC sale, or a generous GHer discounts one for me, great!  Otherwise I just appreciate the photos others post of their collections.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada
