I thought the 2nd shift would cancel out the first outputting lowercase letters; guess not.

Can't keyboards be made so each button is assigned its own signal?
Instead of the matrix overlap thing.
Or is that very expensive?

That would involve two wires running from each switch, and a controller that can handle 100+ seperate inputs... Many times more complicated and expensive than the established alternatives for NKRO.

Enh, a dioded NKRO board pretty much does assign a discrete signal to each switch...

Well, at least it doesn't need a seperate wire for each switch...

Yeah, it's doable. And ch_123, the implementation I'd use, if it were me designing it, would be a common "ground" plus one wire for the other side of each switch, all going direct to the connector (which would be huge of course) with all key interpretation happening inside the computer.

So, basically, doable...but if you're gonna do it, do the heck out of it.

Believe it or not, someone patented that idea. I believe he described that he'd use a couple of FPGAs to process the signals.

I got a warning on a G19 thread for posting this -

Quote
You've just acquired a $200 keyboard which consists of a $10 keyboard with a screen on it. Well done.

On a related note, I am the heir to the Nigerian throne. If you send me $10,000 I will be able to share my family's lost wealth with you.

Does anyone know if there's a "Report humorless douchebag" button on OCN?

mechanical keyboards use higher quality plastics, electronics and switches. you pay more for a better product which isn't the case for rubber dome keyboards.

as senator clay davis would say.

I think I'm, like, one infraction away from a ban. However, I post so much helpful information and articles about power supply that none of them want me to be banned, so I don't get infractions. It's a fine balancing act between being helpful, and being a **** to idiots who get on my nerves.

Or maybe it was a victory based on the fact that the thread topic (see how good your keyboard is.) had nothing to do with the OP post (double shift)?

In either case, :rip: double shift thread.

Manyak gets the final word.

He deleted it? I hope he used Delete AND Backspace, to be on the safe side.

EDIT> I dug out my G11. It passes using the key combinations that my G15 failed (Shift or Control with arrow keys.)
I found a few combos that the G11 failed:
qa,
q,1
q1=
qa [Down Arrow]

So it's still 2-key rollover, just better thought out than the G15. (Unless anyone spots an unfortunate combo of 3 keys that it fails on.)

You thought double-shifted brown fox test was boring. Try hunting down keys that ghost.

At least I get to get rid of stupid threads like that one :)

For real though, it's already got some people believing it. That thread had to go for my own sanity, or all anyone would want would be keyboards that can pass the shift test.

And wow man that avatar's been gone for a while now, lol.

all Manyak is trying to do is increase mechanical keyboard awareness not start a second geekhack so I don't know why you think that. geekhack gets credit and traffic from overclock.net. you can't blame overclock.net for a couple bad apples like Enigma and Pathogen who started the threads. I never even seen them before.

Really?  Hardforum is the only place I've actually left in frustration then requested the moderator to lock out/remove my account and then after that personally made sure to never visit the main page of the site again due to the sheer lack of intelligence and courtesy of some of the forum members a few years back.  Hopefully it's changed, but don't ask me to find out.

I thought that it was more accurate if you alternated the right and left shift button with each keystroke, with the CAPSLOCK key on?

No. They are 12 times smarter! They use a tool to do the job, this enables them to perform the test faster, making them more productive.

Keep em occupied with these tests while we wait for Raj.

I believe they are doing the wrong tests. I for one never claimed that Shift-Up-Left failed. In fact that combo works fine on my G15 (Version 1 [strike]I assume since it has no version number[/strike]. The one with 18 macro keys.  P/N: 867619-0120 PID: BT619DG)

holding down the right Shift and/or Ctrl keys stops the inverted T direction keys from working well. E.g. Shift-Up-Right fails, Ctrl-Down-Left fails

Edit> Spacebar-Left-Right also works on mine.
