OMG!! My model M SSK....
« on: Wed, 07 November 2012, 14:00:56 »
I have ordered 1987 IBM Model M SSK from eBay. I received it just now.
Unfortunately, it is damaged while it was being delivered.

I'm really sad because it is broken and one of rare keyboards is gone...

I'm sure the box fell down from some height because its right side is completely broken.
So, you can see inside of it. and many cracks on it.

Is only the top shell broken, or also the bottom? FYI unicomp might still have some extra shells they could sell you. Also, I sold T!ng from deskthority an SSK with an extra top shell, perhaps he would sell it to you.

A cracked keyboard shell is no functional component, and it could possibly be repaired (although with a permanent scar). How about the barrel plate, membrane  and the controller?

The answer to that is easy: yes and no.

I have build several "Frankenstein" keyboards which were surely improvements upon the parts from which they were made.

I have contacted the seller, and he said he is going to send another one. For the damaged keyboard, he has Fedex insurance. Fedex will come to pick it up.
I don't know what Fedex will do with this keyboard. They might throw it away or return to the shipper.
I hope they do not throw it away.

Even though its shell is broken, it is still working though...

Original seller probably getting broken one back, to be cannibalized for parts -- or maybe repair it?

Classic philosophical issue: Ship of thesius. So if thesius replaces his entire ship one piece at a time, is it still the same? (I argue yes because of continuity of states). What if evil thesius makes a ship out of the parts that real thesius discards? Who has the real ship now?

I'm not as discerning, but I'd just live with it. I'm only worried about metal keyboards looking pretty. The rest are just good to type on.

I don't think Fedex will ship it back to me. I think they will either keep it or ship it back to the seller.
