[WTB] Stickers, O-Rings, Lube/Grease
« on: Sun, 18 November 2012, 15:00:18 »
Gonna be doing a bunch of work to my Filco, so figured I should just do everything at once.

Looking for Stickers, don't really care too much on the color, I'll likely have a red plate to put these on

Looking for O-Rings, never used these before so I don't know my preference, if you've got some at a good price then I'll probably take them.

Looking for Lube/Grease, never used this either so I have no idea what type I should be looking for.  Again, hit me up with a good price and I'll likely take it.  I'll be using it on Blacks/Vintages and Clears, if that matters.

This is for a TKL.

Bump, still looking.

Eyeing some o-rings from WASD...but don't know which ones I want.

You can get an assortment of different lubes on ebay and Lowes.  Try searching "Krytox" on eBay, and make sure to go through MMB's lube guide.  If you're looking for something cheaper, checkout the DuPont stuff MMB mentions from Lowes.

For O-Rings, you can get some from imsto directly or the ones from WASD like you said.  PM WhiteFireDragon for recommendations, I know he ran a GB with a bunch of different kinds.

Stickers will be difficult, but I'm sure someone would be willing to spare a sheet.  GL!

Thanks!

I just went back and re-read MMB's lube guide, and yes I'm definitely looking for something cheaper than $20-30 for a life time supply of switch lube.

Is there any difference in quality/feel between imsto's and WASD's?

Yeah stickers are looking like they are going to be the hardest to get, and I somehow missed Demik's little sale the other day.  There's no chance of us getting another batch of these?

Appreciate the help.

If you're looking for a cheap lubrication setup, use the one mentioned in MMB's guide (Dupont) only for the sliders.  I'd recommend using gear oil (http://www.amazon.com/Red-Line-57904-75W90-Synthetic/dp/B000CPCBF0) for the springs.  A few brush strokes of Dupont lube on the sliders, and a light dip of the spring in gear oil (very light dip) is what I like.  I did a crappy video, but you can see how I do the brush strokes and dipping here:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=YaXOuTEHwkw

For the O-Rings, I've never tested long enough to care because I hate O-Rings =)  They make my keys feel mushy, and I love hitting the bottom of the keycap on the plate so I couldn't tell you.

As for the stickers, you'll need to ask demik to see if he can release his contact.  Maybe we can run another GB for it...

I've got a local lowes, so that's likely what I'll do.  But I'm waiting until I get the custom plate for my Filco so I can hold all the switches on that while I do all the work to them, seems too hard without something other than my hands to hold the switches.
I've watched your video twice as well :p thanks for making that.  Interesting, so a heavy 75w90 gear oil for the springs?  Lubing the springs themselves just stops some of the "scratchy" sound as it moves around right?

What switches felt mushy to you?  I'm curious if they were maybe something likes Reds, with a really light spring?  I like stiff springs, and even blacks feels "light" to me.  I do like the sound of the key bottoming out, but what I'm really looking to do is just tighten everything up and have a much more "solid" feel, less play too.

I'll ask him.

You'll want a heavy viscous oil for your springs to do 2 things:  dampen the sound and reduce friction.  Oiling your springs gives it a pseudo o-ring effect to some degree, and by reducing friction on both the sliders and spring, you're ultimately setting yourself up for a more solid feeling switch.

I've tried O-Rings on Reds and Blues before and didn't enjoy it at all.  It completely took away the "fun" of mechanical keyboards and reduced my stroke by too much.  Reds and Blues by default use a fairly light spring.  I think just upgrading to Blacks/Clears and doing switch modifications will get you what you want.  O-rings might be too much, but that's just me =)

Sherryton just posted a video of him unboxing what looked like hundreds of sheets of stickers in all colors, blue black white green etc. Along with thousands of 65/62g springs. Soon he'll have his own site up and selling all those things.

You should really test out a couple lubes. I tried the DuPont, like it and did my entire poker. However I did some further testing and liked a heavier lube. So now I get to relube my board lol

Not to derail this thread anymore, what heavier lube did you prefer? I'm looking into lubing some sliders and I'd prefer to buy stuff locally.

You think testing on the switch without being installed on the board is enough

I currently only have plate mount.

I'll get in contact with sherryton and see if he's interested in parting with some stuff early. That would be awesome, I wanted some stiffer springs than my blacks too

Thanks for the help

No, they felt the the same just pressing them with my fingers. But when I mounted them on a plate (I didn't solder then on yet), then I could feel the difference.

Are clear springs stiffer than black springs. I have 180 clear springs I want to sell but the person who was going to buy them still hasn't PM'ed me back so......

Oh alright. Then I will just wait until I get my swappable filco plate from the GB. Possibly by that time sherryton will have his store up too.

I think clears are 55g and blacks are 61g. I have a bag of 100 clear switches anyways, but thanks for the thought.

What did you put Super Lube on? Just the springs or sliders too?

On my ergo clear Pure I used sewing machine lube and I noticed a nice difference and it feels nice, but I also have Super Lube sitting around because I used it on all my Cherry stabilizers. Worked wonders and stopped squeak on my SS7G before I sold it.
