Phantom aluminium case
« on: Fri, 08 February 2013, 18:13:30 »
I figure I should make a thread at GH as well since this one is close to finished. I am going to move some info here from the thread at DT soon. The "Phantom milled case A" is the one which I have gone forward with.
A description of it: http://deskthority.net/keyboards-f2/case-discussions-t4530.html#p86541
Some more pics: http://deskthority.net/keyboards-f2/case-discussions-t4530-30.html#p95269
The above post also describes the variations.

A manufacturer has now been found as well, and the cases get quite cheap in larger numbers. This is to gauge interest. Still a bit undecided on feet, colours and how many variations to offer them in which will affect the final cost. We are looking at sub $200 at least.

Sub $200 case that would look good AND would match well with RA/Klaxon? AND it has the fully populated right hand side?

now time to find some money. Great looking case, and unless I have no money by the time it comes up, then you have a definite customer. Nobody else wants to fully populate the right column on an aluminum case... :(

The Phantom was made to fit in a Filco case, so I don't see why not.

Size and shape of the original Filco plate were not a consideration for this design as far as I am aware.  It may not fit.

I would think the Filco Daughterboard would be the most questionable thing about it not fitting. Other than that, I'm not entirely sure. It may or may not fit a Filco plate.

EDIT: Changed a word to what I meant it to say :))

The daughterboard depends...
It sticks up only a small amount over the plate, so depending on how close the top is to the plate could provide clearance even if the top's underside isn't milled out (which based on drawings is not). You could probably clearance it without much issue if need be with some common tools, though from certain angles it could look a bit crude if you aren't careful and might take a bit of work.

The stock Filco plate on the other hand is another issue, however there are often group buys with plates for $20-$40 that will solve that problem. There is one going on right now.

While I would prefer to see the underside milled out, I'm probably in regardless.

That case is beautiful. would it fit a qfr?

The standoff is the biggest issue here. The QFR has a different standoff position compared to the Filco (and subsequently the Phantom, whose PCB was designed to fit a Filco case with no modificactions), and since it's Aluminum, there's no REAL way to cut/grind down the standoff to where the QFR PCB would fit. I don't know if the QFR uses the same/a similar daughterboard that the Filco does, if so, then that's also an issue.

I'm building up my Phantom to use the Klaxon set, so this case would be perfect. I'm in!

As am I. I imagine the "RA" look would be perfect, but the Ragnarok look also looks cool. I'm curious how that would look with the Klaxon/RA set.

Again: Have the Arrclus layout and it's practically an instant buy for me, provided I have the funds.

There have been requests for the area above the Filco controller to be hollowed for it to fit. I may make such an option, but beware, the standard Filco plate is bent at the edges and won't be compatible. The one who requested it will de-solder his switches and replace the plate.

This was designed to be rather cheap and comply with the already existing Phantom plates. There is a bit of a discussion ongoing at DT on how many of you want LED holes.

I could go yay  or nay for LED holes. If it's Yay, then it's easy, if not, then we just go in-switch LEDs for Caps and scroll (for me num) lock.

Sub $200 and I would definitely be down for a case!

Just a quick question, could we get any info on pricing tiers if it's possible?

Edit: As for color, DEFINITELY the RA set.

Klaxon (RoW base + RoW Mods) + Red MKC Spacebar + Red MDPC/White Heatshrink Cable from Pexon + GeekHack Feb Vegas key + THIS RA CASE.

Perfection.

Definitely interested in the arrclus layout. Only reason to go through all the trouble to build a phantom+ metal case or else we can just buy a metal keyboard out there.

However, is there a well thought out arrclus layout?

I'm going for the 5 keys above the arrow keys as hardware macros when not in numpad form, then you know what in numpad form. when not in Numpad form, the insert block and the arrow keys will be identically placed to a standard tkl.

how many clacks do you have?

Because at regular Market prices, at optimal price, you should only have to sell 2 or 3 Clacks to buy this.

Sounds interesting, which key is going to activate the numpad form? I was thinking about scroll lock and there is a LED under that switch which we can use for num lock and I was thinking about using the pause/break as the delete key.

Yeah, scroll lock will be numlock, then the function key (I'm thinking Printscreen) + numlock = scroll lock. Delete is going to be where delete normally is.

What are the main differences compared to http://mechanicalkeyboards.com/shop/index.php?l=product_detail&p=280

Only thing I don't like about that one is the LED holes - looks like this plan hasn't yet decided for or against them on the DT thread.

This will also have the options of being winkeyless, having the arrow cluster area opened up as well as the function row.

Also, Damien, that case would only work if you used a Filco plate with your Phantom, relegating you to a standard layout and basically defeating the purpose of a Phantom in the first place! :D

JKJK. It won't work though. It relies on a feature that Filco plates have to keep the PCB up.

Yes you should be right, though it won't fit in the Vortex case because it uses the bend of the Filco Plate to hold it up, which the Phantom doesn't have.
