keycaps on the ninja are side-printed, and the badge on the case is mettalic black instead of silver.

Is it normal for cherry stabilizers to "leak" something? This is the first/only board I currently have with cherry stabs and they do this, I have wiped it a couple times before and it keeps coming back.

This thread in particular.

It kinda stuck after that.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Is there any actual evidence that MX whites are infact factory lubed?  Or is this just a preconceived notion due to the usual behavior of using lube on clicky switches?  If they are in fact not factory lubed could the muffled click be due to a totally different material of the stem/slider to something more like UHMW or a nylon type that is considered self lubricating?

captain has decided to say they are not factory lubed and I honestly do not know if we have anything other than anecdotal evidence to go either way.

I am of the opinion they are lightly factory lubed and that the hit or miss click is due to issues with the lube, I also believe the slider is a different material.

I just opened one that was in my desk and it definitely has lube on it.  ::)

How hard would it be to solder back on a usb connector like this
http://a248.e.akamai.net/origin-cdn.volusion.com/ctjx3.3omzd/v/vspfiles/photos/CBL-117-2.jpg%3F1368732341

Do you have to individually solder each of the little pin like things to its respective place on the controller or just solder all of them to the controller.

Could you do this with a weller WLC100

Please post a picture of the damage. You have to solder each pin to the correct solder pad. That iron will work well.

You broke the pads off the board, so you are going to have to carefully figure out where each pad goes and then direct wire those connections.

Try to write down what you see of the piece that is connected to the USB port still because you are are going to have to remove that, so try to understand where everything goes as you remove that...

Looks like you need to figure out which traces it was soldered to that broke.  Then re-create those traces with thin copper wires.  I'm not a USB connector specialist--hopefully someone who makes cables routinely can weigh in (or someone who knows about USB traces).

As to how to "stick" your connector back onto the PCB, you could probably glue it on with some epoxy glue under it. You can try this thread too:
http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=42824.1590

And some high resolution photos of the connector and the PCB would be great to include as well.

If I'm being honest, you're screwed. For an amateur to repair this is near impossible. You might as well buy a new one. Working on it will likely only leave you frustrated. The traces are so small, and the damage so severe, that I personally wouldn't even attempt a repair.

Looking at this again, you may not actually as bad off as I originally thought.  If I remember correctly, all  of the connections for that usb port is on the end.  Those pads seem to be in good shape.  If that is the case, then I would not recommend removing the part of the pcb that is attached to the usb, and instead use that to glue it back on.

If someone else can confirm that the 4 solder joints at the 4 corners of the usb is only for mounting to the board and the actual connections are the ones at the end, I think you may have a shot at fixing this.

You can buy a set from Originative:

I've got that already, it's on my MJ2 with reds. That's why I daily drive it now lol.

I agree with this. I didn't see any lube in the MX White switches I took apart. I no longer believe that the MX Whites have extra lube in them from the factory.

So you are saying mx whites are not factory lubed?

If they still do, then it must be incredibly hard to notice. He's saying he doesn't believe that they are.

The new one that I opened didn't have any extra lube on it. I've come across some of Lysol's old posts saying that all the MX switches come lubed from the factory so I'm not sure if the Whites have this typical lubing PLUS the supposed lube that an MX White supposedly has. If I were at home, I'd open more Whites up to see if they have lube on them.

But for now, I'm going to say I don't believe that MX Whites have extra lubing. Nor does it say that there is lubing in the DT wiki entry. And I don't see any lube in the DT Wiki picture.

Olivetti is a manufacturer of telecommunication devices like phones and tablets as well as computers. They've made typewriters and keyboards in the past. I'm not sure if they still make keyboards.

Olivetti asked Cherry to make a custom line of G80-3000s for them. The subline was called a G80-3011. It has the Olivetti keycap color scheme. I believe this is what inspired the set from Originativco.

I recently opened about a hundred (new) whites and they were all lube-less. It seems safe to say that they're no longer pre-lubed, even if they once were.

I recently opened about a hundred (new) whites and they were all lube-less. It seems safe to say that they're no longer pre-lubed, even if they once were.

So what was the difference in the ones that had varying clicks?

If I remember correctly you posted that about half of yours had a different click sound.

Yep, about 45 with a hard, mx green-like click, 45 with the correct soft click, and 10 with no click at all. I spent some time comparing all three and found no noticeable difference between the three. (I don't have any tools for precise measurement, though.) Thechemist also believes that the bottom housing has something to do with it, and that replacing it can sometimes change the click; I was able to confirm this to a small degree, but nothing dramatic changed using 5 spare bottom housings on a clicking, soft-clicking, and non-clicking white stem/spring.

That's why my current theory is that it's black magic. (Clack magic?)

how to repair? :)
Follow the broken trace to where it leads next, then bypass with some wire.

Anyone know where these blue topre caps are from?

They look similar to the ones on Elitekeyboards but they say "These keycaps fit Topre Realforce keyboards only!"

Hmm.

I think just some of the set is incompatible with the HHKB (i.e. right shift) but the Alphas and Spacebar fit.

I still think they are lubed, that also makes sense as to why some click differently or not at all.

Yeah, I thought that too. I guess they are from this set.

Can you remove cherry plate mounted stabilizers without taking all the switches off the board? Do you just have to desolder the spacebar switch or would the whole board need taken apart?
