i used to fold for evga also back in the day when i was on my parents electricity :p.  i may be able to get a rig up for this.  i have an extra brand new evga 280 gtx if anyone is interested in upgrading or adding a second card to their rig.

Well I installed it, don't know how long I will keep it up as I will be gaming much and streaming, not much extra resources when I do that, not to mention I turn my PC off usually :P

Just modified my fcrontab to kick up the full SMP process while I'm at work, while keeping single-thread going when I'm at home (and likely using the system).

need more people to do folding no matter your single computing power, show the mighty collective of power in the geekhack!

*insert evil laugh*

after all guys......im pretty sure a large amount of these keyboards we have are connected to a computer and any computer can join the team :)

i know right now there isn't any motive to do it other than trying to help a good cause but it would be cool to see a large team come from geekhack.

right now i have my mighty Leviathan set to "light" mode but it seems to be contributing fine and making less heat

If you don't care about power consumption, my gtx 580 is pushing around 28-30kppd, and you can find them used for under $200 which would give nice performance/$.

And when the hell did Glod get in front of me?!??!?! I'm gonna have to start trying harder. Thankfully my cpu finally decided to start kicking in and is doing around 8-10kppd now.

we are going back and forth for 1st, but i have more WU for the past few days.

the most interesting thing is that i haven't been running at full power since the first days and it gets pretty much the same kppd, i have it set on light which uses my CPU at around 60% only unless the computer is completely idle then it runs at 100%. and i stopped using all my video cards and apparently it makes the CPU get more kppd. less heat and power consumption too. weeee

I don't know how to set my GPU to run at 50%. It's either 100% off, or I have to set it to "full" for it to work.

Is there I way that I could set both the GPU and CPU to run at like 60%-70% usage when I'm just browsing? So far it's only letting me set the number of cores used and even that isn't that reliable

I let mine run at full force for 9 hours every day. Xeon E3-1230 with a GTX 550Ti. Not too high-powered, I guess, but it gets some crunching done. Unfortunately, I won't run it more than that due to the heating up of my bedroom, and due to power use. I pay my own bills. :(

Also, the Linux version that I have running does not have much by way of options. I'll see if the newest version gives me more flexibility.

no way to throttle gpus, that i know of

you disable all GPU usage and can throttle the cpu however down to light which is 50-60% or idle which is 0% unless..well...idle.

Ok, sure (wink wink)

BTW I've only been running when I'm here, I don't fold when I'll be gone for 2+ hours or when I sleep (I get a slight whine when the GPU runs and it's not the fan). I'd still like to get as much folding in while I can since I don't fold when I'm home or when I move into my off campus house next semester.

maybe to motivate we can come up with a different group inside geekhack that includes folding like "Geekhack Science", though that sounds a lot like that thing he who should not be named has going (lol ri-pster "keyboard science"). Don't know then, cant think of something right now....i feel like i got like this great idea in my head and i can't get it out.

Thankfully my 580 tops at 56*C :)

wow i didnt realize the i5 got that hot, my 3930k runs at 70C on load when running at 4.7Ghz and this is with dual water rads and push pull 140mm rad fans, but gotta realize its on the same loop and same pump as the 4 cards and motherboard.

Not running at 4.7Ghz though at the moment, barely makes a difference over 4.3Ghz and puts off more heat.

my problem with folding is that its the only thing, other than burn-in software, to run every part of my computer at 100% full power, meaning CPU at 100%, 4xGPU at 100% and  it creates some serious room temp and noise problems. I tried it for 4 days and stopped.

It sucks so much power from my 1200w power supply that the 92mm exhaust fan on the PSU automatically goes into highest rpm and it starts putting out MORE heat than my electric space heater. So the room becomes a furnace and sounds like a jet engine. I wonder if that's normal for a PSU to act like that. ohwell

oh well, putting out like 30-50kppd with just the CPU folding :P looks good to me :)

i should also mention i have a thin-box running an older atom processor that i set up with crunchbang folding. it is putting out a massive 150ppd...150... -_- i think it has completed 2 WU since i started. I should have it folding under another username just to show how pathetic it is

Dang, what are you doing to that poor cpu? Not cooling it well or just decided to oc the heck out of it?

How are you getting so much out of your cpu? Mines usually around 2k, and 10k best.

OK, a bit confused:

The webclient says my GPU is "running", but it hasn't made any progress on the task at hand. Tried restarting the computer, but that didn't help. Any suggestions?

(CPU is running fine and I wouldn't be in last place if I wan't making a measly 2298 PPD...)

Is there any info under advance view? (right click tray icon > advance control)
Select the GPU in there and look in the "selected work unit"

So, rewarding the one who has the most horsepower? Well, at least they have the horsepower to run the game.
