Name changes have no infrastructure negatives that I'm aware, as opposed to say account deletion which can screw with the forum's backend database. We have no problem with it in theory, as long as the number of people requesting name changes remains small. It would be a burden for mods to do lots of them, and it would break down community cohesion if everyone changed their name every few weeks or whatever.

Name changes affect all your posts, past and future. And when I say PM a mod I mean any of the mods, including myself.

Awesome, I get confused with the who's a mod or admin or whatever! I know the starts were supposed to fix that....but it's like reading the OP for me...just don't do it!

Each user should ideally be identified by an abstract identifier, such as a sequentially allocated number.

Changing a username should just be a case of changing the "name" attribute for that user record.

We could all go by our automatically assigned numbers. It would be easier to keep track of people if we only had to memorize 14 digit numbers, instead of abstract names.

we don't change names. if you have some extremely pressing reason for it we might change your display BUT NOT ACCOUNT NAME. but it better be life or death. it's a pain in the ass for the entire community to figure out who you are again, not to mention a time sink for us.
