So I got stuck working in the field for half a day or so yesterday and in the process lost my pocket knife.

What I had was a SOG Flash 1, I really like it because it's a smaller knife and it has a convenient lock. I purchased it about a year and a half ago from Amazon.

Does anyone have any other recommendations? I'm always looking to try something new.

I have a Kershaw Leak and a Gerber Evo. I much prefer my Kershaw. Love that thing.

Gerber is **** IMO, kershaw is my favorite.

Whoa! I like that blade.

And I've looked in the leek before and I think the reason I went with the SOG was because it had a lock. I'm somewhat accident prone. ;)

It's just pattern welded "damascus"

The only reason I bought it was because it was only a few buck more than a standard Skyline. This also has a lock

The lock mechanism I'm referring to keeps the knife from opening not just a lock to keep the blade open, is that what you meant? Maybe it would be better called a 'safety' switch.

And I'm thinking I prefer a smaller knife, the one I had was overall length 5.75-inches and weight: 1.3-ounces.

Nope, it has a linear lock. You can see it on the inside of the finger cutout in the top of the picture I linked.

bought it when it was on sale for like $20...great little knife and way better then my other gerber daily....

For the size and weight, you can't beat getting another SOG Flash 1. I love mine.

That said, my everyday carry is almost always a slightly larger Benchmade. Any of their AXIS lock knifes are just awesome. Once I got used to that lock design, it's all I want. (I have a pocketknife collecting problem, much like keyboards.)

Had a CRKT PECK on my keychain for years. Always there for opening boxes, stripping a wire, slicing fruit, etc. Great little knife.

Only reason I stopped carrying it everywhere was the security theater hassles while traveling. Still got a Gerber multi-tool in the SUV, but I don't carry knives anymore.

Those benchmade knives look amazing but above my price point for sure.

And I used to cary a gerber that looked like that CRKT only about half the size.

Definitely go Benchmade if you don't mind spending a bit extra. They're well worth the price, and the axis lock is awesome.

If you don't want to spend that much though, I'd recommend the Spyderco Tenacious.

Benchmade is nice but pricy, you could get a Kershaw or KAI (who owns Kershaw) for maybe half the price or less and they are very good too.

Just remembered I took a pic of the Benchmade Mini Griptilian a while ago. It's fairly small but I haven't found anything that I couldn't do with it that I could have done with a bigger knife.

I keep a small lightweight pocket knife on my keychain for the exact same reasons. Super handy, slim, lightweight, and makes a great keychain.

I got this for $10 at a swap meet. I removed the clip, and have used it for over a decade on my keychain. As cheap as it is, it's actually quite a nice little knife. Surprisingly similar to the CRKT as well. Columbia River also makes something similar.

I probably shouldn't say this, but it's also slim enough to slip into your wallet (while attached). Placed this way into tins at metal detectors, security sees your keys and wallet, and either assumes it's clipped to your wallet or just laying under you wallet and lets it pass on through. It's made it into amusement parks and other ummm... places knives are not normally allowed. Not that I carry it for protection, I just carry it for utility and forget it's there.

Oh, and beware of butterfly knives and long blades, they are illegal in some states, this is one reason I like my little keychain one, it skirts all of the laws regarding knives and therefore great for travel.

I just got my first pocket knife 2 days ago, a Buck vantage pro. I absolutely love it. But it's probably bigger than what ya want. There's a smaller version tough.

I like the deep pocket clip, I like the size and weight, seems sturdy, the blade is s30v and is supposed to have a good heat treatment, and I like the way it looks and stand in my hand!

But I can't compare with anything else!

For a single blade, locking folder, you can't go wrong with a Buck 110.

My daily carry is a Leatherman Fuse. I find I like having more than just a blade on my belt.

I carried a CRKT K.I.S.S. for a long time before I started carrying the Leatherman.

I carried one of these a while back and it was really handy!

And I think I'm just going to get another SOG flash. I like the safety lock feature, that is to say it's locked closed.

And I know the feeling JD, I've got a couple micro multi-tools I keep in my desk at work.

Good call, the Flash is great. Though, the safety lock drove me crazy... it kept tripping by accident. I put superglue in it to turn it off.

If we're talking multi-tools, I carry a Leatherman Juice S2 most days. It's small enough to pocket, but has just about everything you need for small jobs. Doesn't beat a full size Leatherman on your belt though.

I'm a fan of spyderco i carried a ukpen knife for some time but now i just make myself a new knife when i want a new knife. I have been using my own knifes for 2 years or so now its nice to have something you made with you.

I have owned knifes by Spyderco, SOG, Kershaw, Buck, Victorinox, Wenger, Leathermen and would recommend any knife by these brands.

I cant really make a recommendation as i have been using non locking knifes for 4 years or so and i know most people want a good locking knife. If you know what you are doing and using the right tool for the job you should never have a knife close on you if it does you are doing something wrong.

Not really a knife, and I would advise against carrying in your pocket, but I'd recommend the Leatherman OHT. It has 2 knives and you could carry it in your pocket, but it's a bit heavy. I carry it in a MOLLE sheath strapped to a bag. Everything is deployable using only one hand. Everything locks too.

The only issue I have with the Leatherman is their inverted fold. When you unfold the tool and you're using the pliers, your hand is gripping the exposed edges of the folded tools (the edges of the "U" shape, not the rounded back). For the past 15 years I've been using the Gerber multi-tool instead, much more comfortable to use on a regular basis.

True, it's a bit on the heavy side, but it's weight combined with the glass breaker on the back gives it a second possible use

It's carbon steel, it gets that patina look after a while. Actually a good thing cause then it'll rust much less.

this fellow lives in my pocket. its not terribly high quality or expensive, but it weighs basically nothing, and its sharp, and is perfectly servicable for the things i need it for. plus it looks nice.
