Cherry MX Blues: 65g vs 80g or something else
« on: Thu, 18 July 2013, 06:15:19 »
I love clicky switches, and thus I like blues. Would love to make them eve more clicky.

Reading on GH I have found out, one way to do it is to swap out the springs for heavier ones.

I won't switch out the switches to white/green.

Now which spring is better 65g or 80g. I will be getting these from originative.

I did read Captain's review of the 65g, and they do help in my goal, however, anyone tried 80g springs with blues, how do they feel?

aren't 80g springs close to stock black springs?

I think so too, and thus I am leaning towards getting the 80g springs.

if they are indeed black springs then they are great.  ghetto greens are by far my favorite cherry switch.  i think 65g springs are too close to stock blues to make much of a difference.

Since I will be using heavier than normal zinc keycaps on these, that adds to the fact that 80g makes more sense.

65g definitely feels different from stock blues. Same with 62g. If you're using zinc caps, 80g or MX Black springs would be great. MX Black springs might be easier to find too.

Originative has 80g springs. Easier to get.

Harvesting from a set of black would cost me more :P

Ah ok. I didn't know if shipping costs would be terrible to India.

Harvesting from blues is dirt cheap here in India (Thanks to TVS-e).

Buying switches or harvesting from other keyboards is going to endup being costlier.

Could you tell me a little about the TVS-e keyboards? I never heard of them. Just curious.

TVS-e (TVS Electronics) is a keyboard manufacturer in India. They have only one keyboard in two variants: USB and PS2.

They are a subsidiary of ZF electronics which is the parent company of Cherry.

They are quiet cheaply built with plastic plate mounted Cherry switches. Average at best soldering, flimsy plastic case. It is very very light compared to other mechanical boards. Keycaps are pad printed with very thin walls. However it costs less than $25 here in India (Which is quite a lot in a country where people are used to sub $4 keyboards). So that is $25 for 104 Cherry MX blue switches (Less than $0.24) per switch.

Essentially it is a very cheap Cherry board specifically manufactured for India.

I am getting the 80g, feel they will be just the right weight.

Is it essential to lube the springs before swapping them? Can't seem to find any lube set :(, the ones from limmy are sold out, anywhere else where I can get them?

Lubing you switches will make the clicky feeling feel very different. You might want to think about that. Whites come factory lubed and they're no where near as clicky as my blues and greens are.

Thanks.

I take that in a positive way and can wait till much later to lube them then if needed. Hopefully limmy or someone else will start a GB for lubes by then.
