This is a high-end hobby that people tend to invest lots of money in.

I can hardly call it a high-end hobby. Those car people, watch people, and photography guys spend a *lot* more. And seriously, I think clack is only expensive for students with no income, like me. If I hava a job (in US), I would grab all clacks I ever see on classifieds with no hesitation.

I won't lie, as much as I hate paying inflated aftermarket prices, they keep the supply and demand for Clacks in the right place. They shouldn't be easy to get, and I've got no skin in the game on the seller side because I don't sell my Clacks. I like the potential for value they have, and the unconformable exactness of rarity which drives up prices. An over saturated market of easily acquirable collectables makes the hunt and kill much less satisfying.

You've also gotten spumoni and a tri-color direct from CC at retail prices.  Would you feel the same if your two iconic clacks had cost you 600+ or never been available for your purchase?  You're in a really unique position, I really do want your input.

Wow, no need for the attitude.  Just because he's lucky doesn't mean his opinion is worthless.

I've been a little lucky lately and I'm really thankful, but I feel the same way I do now as I did before when I was clackless.  If you can get a good deal (retail) for a clack that isn't your favourite, it's still a good opportunity to get into the game.  Even if you can't trade it away, you've got a really neat novelty.  And if you can trade it, awesome.  And if you eventually decide it's not for you and you want to get rid of it, you can then sell it away at retail and make someone else's day.

Homie I said really when I meant it.

NT (when he got his OG tri) and anyone who has been dibs'd has basically been handed money by CC.  The prices they pay to get they key are not reflective of the market value of the item, so by being selected they are capable of making a profit INSTANTLY.

I genuinely wanted to know why he said he supported the price inflation was important for maintaining rarity when the keys I mentioned were acquired through extraordinary means and can be directly viewed as outliers in the supply chain.  NT hasn't tried to hock them or anything, I'm just curious the opinion of someone who actually owns the pivotal pieces we discuss.

I can answer this one easily as well. I don't intend to sell any of my novelty caps unless I ABSOLUTELY have to. And it's nice knowing that if something arises, you have a safety net. If for some reason, I do ever have to get rid of them, I know that I can do so, and as a result of the exclusivity, I can be a little more financially secure. I'm not 100% for the selling at inflated prices, but we have seen it before where there is some good reasoning behind it.

OH yes! Vader folk should chime in!

What about the red vader?  What happens when a one of a kind investment has the potential to become all of the sudden no-longer one of a kind?

I'm tryna' get people talking.  Money is just changing hands and there is not often enough straight up discussion about pricing outside of snide **** in FS threads.

Nono, I honestly just misread your statement.  I read "I really do not want your input", and was really shocked to see that so I replied the way I did.  But clearly that is not what you said, and I'm sorry for the confusion - I should read twice before responding like that.  Once again, many apologies, and I do completely understand what you meant and I agree.   :thumb:

Did you even understand what I said? It wasn't a question directed at you. I was saying in the entire world of keyboards, this is as high end as it gets when keyboards are given away for free. We here are literally spending an infinite amount more. I mean, I could say car people, watch people, photography are nothing compared to high end painting collectors. See how it makes your statement null? Like I said, it's all relative.

I see. Sorry I'm not a native speaker. I guess the point I wanna make is that, clack is definitely the high-end in keyboard, but compared to other hobbies, it's not an expensive hobby. Especially when you have a job, holding a clack you don't like for future trade seems like nothing.

I agree with t2russo about not buying Clacks as an investment.  CC could always make more of something, or there could actually be more of that one of a kind Clack that is floating around that might surface later on.  One example is the red Darkside/Vader.  First there was supposed to only be the one (I think this was the one that Ripster was always showing off), then there were two, and now there are at least three. :)

However, I've gotten a couple of Clacks for trading purposes, but it's really not recommended unless you do a lot of research as t2russo has mentioned.  You can't get Mr. Friday for your common Hack Orange, and people are going to ask for your Mr. Friday for their common Mint Gum.  At least when I get something for trade, it's something I'd actually enjoy (and not mind having doubles of... doubles actually look pretty cool) just in case I do get stuck with it.

Agreed also about the clacks as an investment thing. But honestly I haven't seen a lot of immediate turn-around classifieds threads lately, there seems to be a lot more trading going on now a days, which is just fine by me. It's a good thing that those who clack-flipped immediately after sales are chastised the way they are, but you can't lump them in with every other type of sale.

As for big sell-offs, isn't that the end pay out? Sometimes you grow tired of something, or outgrow it. If you know the rough AM value and are looking to sell off a collection you shouldn't be stigmatized for it, and you should get what your collection is worth not what you paid for it. I think that's a totally legitimate thing to do.

Probably because whenever someone gets one, they just message one of the big collectors and keep it to PM's only.

minimum buyin for an audiophile was like $600 in gear to not get banned from headfi lol.

I actually decided to make a hobby out of keyboards because 1) it's novel (keyboard customization is completely unheard of the general public) 2) it's CHEAP AS DIRT.  I'm well under 1K per year at this point.  I've spent more on 2 monitors (even after my discounts) and tablets separately.  I've actually spent a lot less on mice because I seem to be quite talented at picking them out for myself...

600 would net you a pair of mid range headphones and a cheap amp/dac combo. Head-fi is srs biz. Before I started geeking out on keyboards, high end audio was my money sink.

In my opinion the night owl is not depth black... The ek page said that... But it has kind of another shade in it. I think it was already discussed somewhere.

Approval.

Cheers!
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Well, he said drinking out of the Oktoberfest stein ;). From the drips on the side, I'd guess it's just water.

What a wimp.

Dude, sell some of those origami birds.  Make money.  Get Beer.  Wait.  "Malaysia's Own Oktoberfest"?  rly?  You kind of need red-faced fat German guys in lederhosen for Oktoberfest.  Also you need that Munchen Fried Chicken.

Oh and lots and lots of weisswurst.

And of course some beer.

Selling the origami birds? Isn't that disrespectful or something? But hmm... That's an interesting idea. Perhaps when no one is looking! Would you trade a few for one Clack, eth0s?

Woa, unlucky! I did not have pay import duties for mine, but in the end I did not get a Miz kite :D The officers probably opened the package and were astonished by the beauty!
Pictures please when you get them  :-X

Any veterans out there knows if there's a way to check if you're "blacklisted" by CC?

Been staying up late for every sale since I joined and haven't gotten in yet, just want to see if I'm blacklisted.

-cheers!

Hi,

I checked and I regret to inform you are, in fact, blacklisted.
Sorry for any inconveniences this may have caused and best regards!

I noticed today that my Kurple Push O'natural has a nice big scratch on the side. I haven't used it so it must have happened on its way to me from CC.  :(

It's part of the mould. A couple pages back, it was pointed out on all the new (420?) clacks.
