I used to tell people about my SIIG Suntouch (white Alps) back in the early 90s, before being a mechanical enthusiast was even a "thing." Nobody understood it back then, either.

I'm not embarassed that the Blackwidow got me into mechanical boards. Everyone has to start somewhere. Had a Blackwidow for almost a year then bought a Filco Majestouch 104.

My first good board was a Microsoft X4.  Loved that thing.

Back-lit - check
Programmable macros - check
built in wrist rest - check

This was before I knew anything, and had never felt a mechanical switch.  I have to admit though that even though it was rubber dome, it felt pretty good to type on and was great for late night SC2 sessions.

First Mech was a Ducky 1008C (OCN edition) w/ mx blues.
wut. i'd buy a ****ty IBM board for that green V2

My first decent keyboard is this QFR with blues I'm typing on now. (just got it today and I love it!!) I'm looking at purchasing my second good keyboard. Most likely going to get the Corsair Vengeance K70 with blues or Ducky Shine 3 with blues.

I'm kinda in the same boat. I bought a k60 when I was junior in undergrad a couple years ago. Now that I'll be starting grad school I thought I'd splurge and get a Filco MJ2 104. I couldn't be more pleased.

My first mechanical keyboard was a BWU.  The shift key and space bar started sticking after a week and i never bought another razer product since.  I am using a ducky 2 shine while my realforce 87u arrives in the mail tomorrow :D.  Very excited for my first topre board.  Now i just need to find someone to sell me some cool key caps!

For several years I loved a Compaq rubber dome keyboard, the SK-2800 with media buttons. I went on a few forums and talked about how well I liked it, and especially the rubber media buttons. Some people who knew something about keyboards thought that I was saying that rubber domes were great, and I took some flak. Shortly thereafter I decided to re-discover what mechanical keyboards were like.

After hearing that the Model F XT was the best-feeling board, I bought one on ebay. This was before Soarer's converter, and the only readily-available option was the Hagstrom, at the time, an open circuit board like the Teensy. I build an outboard box for it that was about as large as a pack of cigarettes and translucent plastic.

After using it for a short while, I could not tolerate the layout and sold it on ebay, complete with the Hagstrom (and got a good price, too, eventually!). Ripster saw the listing and ridiculed my effort as "ghetto" and he was quite right. This was just about the time I got started here at Geekhack.

So those were the things that I was embarrassed about. I replaced the Model F XT with a Model M and paddled into the main stream.
"However, even though I was born in the Mesozoic, I do know what anyone who wants to reach out to young people should say: Billionaires took your money. They took your chance to buy a home. They took your chance at a good education. They stole your opportunities. Billionaires took the things you want in life. If you really want those things, you have to take them back.
That's the message. That's the whole message. Say that every day, not just to reach America's frustrated young white men, but people of every age, race, and gender.
Late-stage capitalism is a wealth-concentration engine, focused on vacuuming up every dollar and putting it in as few hands as possible. Republicans are helping that vacuum suck.
How does a tiny fraction of the population get away with this? They do it by dividing the other 99% of Americans against themselves."

Being embarassed about owning any particular keyboard brings an aspect of elitism to this hobby that I don't particularly enjoy.

Now that I think about it...my FC660M with Cherry Reds that I got. Embarrassed because I only got it because of the price, when shortly after this Poker X that I am currently using was bought at a similar price. I then did a ergoclear mod, and now I am considering selling my FC660M after I install the plate that WFD sold to me. Seriously loving the feel and customization of this board. I can't even add good keycaps to the FC660M because of the different dimensions on the board. The keycaps are too short for me too, so I keep misclicking often.

... crap, like I remember? That's something like 23 years ago. Probably an M or an Alps board. I used to buy FK2001's for dragging around or to the office because they were cheap enough to be essentially disposable.

EDIT: Yes. This means that I have been touch-typing for longer than many of you have been on this earth. (There are typewriters that predate the computers.)

My first mech keyboard was my Filco camo edition. I was waiting for it impatiently and it happened to get home on a Friday where my girlfriend was home, so I "forces" her to bring it to the job for me (10 min from home). She came and I was so happy and no one understood me at the job (and yet I work in a software development company...). Our HR guy (we are friendly and like to joke together) even took a picture, but not for the good reasons ya know. Yet I was still proud and still am to this day. And I can't wait to get my pbt set from Ivan's GB and put them on my work keyboard!

No embarrassment here. Before my first mechanical, a Das Keyboard, I had a Logitech G510. Before that, the Logitech 5500 (I think it is), which came comboed with the ever so beautiful MX Revolution mouse. I still have both of those keyboards.

LOL original saitek eclipse for me.

Upon reflection, I think the thread title is a little misleading.  The first keyboard I talked about was the first one I purchased separately (the first one not bundled with a system), and when I used it at work I recall it was a bit embarrassing to explain why it was all lit up.

Since then I don't think any of my keyboards have caused me any chagrin, okay maybe that SkiData board...  People who work with me tend to be interested in my collection, especially since I loan them out at every opportunity.

Maybe a better thread title would be;

First mech was a BWU, used it for about a year before stumbling upon GH. To which I promptly ordered a Pure. I think first board I wasn't "embarrassed" to talk about was the Pure as it was / is much more respectable than the BWU.

Razer Tarantula -> Cyborg V5 when the razer died. Hated the V5 and quickly sought to find a keyboard to replace it.

Settled on MJ2 TKL Ninja with Blues. Which I just handed over to a friend yesterday to try.

Now, I primarily use a poker 1 with blacks at work and a poker II with browns at home. Of course, in between the Razer Tarantula and Cyborg V5 I bought a macbook pro (on currently cause I should be studying for my Signals and Systems final). Actually loved the scissor switches. I occasionally use a membrane at work when I'm too lazy to bring in my poker (probably two times a week). I actually prefer switching between the three switch types.

Have tried topre in HHKB Pro 2. Just didn't like the feel overall... or maybe I just wanted to invest the extra $100 on hardware when I really preferred cherry mx anyways...

Anyways, I've found my preferred switches after over a year. (Brown's / Black's) - interesting isn't it.. lol
