What's your favorite layout?
« on: Mon, 29 July 2013, 11:20:47 »
Maybe I've missed this thread, but I'm interested in what everyone's favorite key layout is.

Mine: 60%'s.

I'd say perhaps the 1800 layout, because it has everything you need in a compact design. I was never a fan of 60% until I tried a HHKB. The HHKB layout is awesome.

I like my TKLs. They're big enough, but they're not too small.

Was wondering what this layout was... For some reason, I can't make myself used full sized anymore... even trying full sized cherry's.

This layout

It is similar to the KMAC mini (picture from Calavera). I'm not sure if this counts though because I haven't tried it yet, but I just know I will like it.

Never tried anything but tkl and ful size 104, but i still want to try a 60% to see if I dislike it.  I assume I would since I use the arrow keys and page up/down/home/end a decent amount when browsing websites.  I also usually play mmo's so function keys are nice to have(and i like them separate unlike mx mini).  So I would have to say that tkl will probably always be my favorite.

I'm not too picky on size but I need ANSI or something close to it and for sure a long left shift.

For size, I like a TKL or smaller but I'll take a fullsized+ IBM Model F AT for the feels.

ANSI TKL.

HHKB lack of arrow keys still irks me.

Full size is a bit too big (says he who is currently refurbishing two Model M).
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

I really like the FC660C "60%" layout. However I do mistype on it more frequently than any other keyboard I've ever used.

Phantom 7bit I will find out soon... and I do like the G80-2100 for nostalgic/retro purposes.

Would it be wrong to piggy-back off this layout thread?

I have to do a lot of subscripts and superscripts, and that is like my least favorite series of keystrokes in all of the universe.  Would it be easier to reprogram the keys required to sub/super or is there a layout you can suggest that would make ctrl+shift+= less gut wrenching?

"man up and deal with it" is also an acceptable answer  :p

TKL is probably my favorite, but not a strong one.  I like TKL layout, but I also like the layout of Leopold's FC600* keyboards, and those 60% layouts with additional function row keys along the left margin.  I could possibly get into 60% keyboards if I can get used to using WASD as arrow cluster with a modifier (I use navigational keys often).  I don't even mind full-sized boards if they have skinny bezels, but would prefer smaller sized ones.

75% layout keyboards, like KBT Race, would probably be the most logical for me, but I don't particularly like how they look.

I like the standard ANSI US layout... possibly because it's the only one I've tried, and as a gamer/programmer I like all the keys to be there without a function key.

My favorite layout is the Model F, 122-key Super Attack Fortress, Deathstar-sized layout.

More is more.

I'm not even claiming that I use those extra keys. I don't. But I like knowing they're there for me.

I don't see the attraction to tiny 60% layouts. Granted, I've never tried one, but I imagine a tighter layout is harder to use.

"100%" 105 key layout is awesome. You can say what you want but as soon as I try another layout (like for example winkeyless, or even worse, TKL), there's missing something. For gaming there is no alternative for me. 60% for writing - never tried one but I'd say rather meh. Got my G80-1800 or G80-11800 for that, smaller but still fullsized somehow. I like them for typing on my laptop

I can get down with that, I'm not taking this keyboard hiking to the top of Everest, I want everything I could possibly ever hope to need in front of me... cause why not

Not to say the board I'm about to build is going to be 122, but it WILL have some superfluous nonsense, cause it makes me happy

I prefer 60% for home/personal/non-power user.

For work/etc... I need my dedicated arrows, though, I won't go full-size, again.  TKL just feels right.

Granted - I kinda want to try out that 1800 layout.

The "tenkeyless" layout as shown in masterchief's avatar. I don't really need such keys as "insert", "home", "end" and arrow keys if they can be found from the numpad.
