A new MX-MINI keyboard I made
« on: Thu, 15 August 2013, 00:17:42 »
Hi, folks.
Just wanted to share some pics of my new MX-MINI. :)

I designed this housing myself using AutoCAD.
The housing is made through CNC processing.
The top and bottom are of aluminum and the mid-layer is made of polycarbonate just like my other keyboards such as 2TU.
The PCB is called ps2avr MX-MINI designed by a living legendary in Korea.
It supports several combinations of layouts based on winkey/winkeyless combo bottoms.

Pics are from my blog: http://22gongbang.tistory.com/103

Wow, that looks really awesome. What did you use for the case? Seems like metal and acrylic to me. I love how the keys look like they're just floating of the plate, similar to Corsair's. Great job!

I could be wrong but I believe that is one of GON's cases.
It's a good width!  If it's half-width it's too narrow, and full-width is too wide.

what are the quality of these self built boards like? Im kind of tempted now to make this a project. I just dont want to end up spending a bunch of money on something that ends up sucking when I could go get something commercial

The components are generally top of the range because they are made for very knowledgeable enthusiasts, and wouldn't sell otherwise.

The quality of the final built board is pretty much up to the skills of the person building it.

Every one I have seen here is absolutely fantastic!
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

That look like a GON's case, but i think it's not.
This case have little space come up near the usb connector.(i don't really know what should that called) And the GON's case doesn't.
And this case has bolts on all four side, when GON's case has bolts on top and bottom side only.

The quqlity, I can tell, is much better than those on the market.
This is a handcrafted work.

That is for firmware upload using an ISP loader.

Brilliant work! The off center windows logos would bother me, but that's just because I'm OCD when it comes to keycap symmetry.
I am in love with the acrylic/metallic housing sandwich. It looks incredible

No, that is one of Kaliet's cases. If you look close the assembled is slightly different and it seems like the polycarbonate center is slightly different. Gon anodizes all of his cases too.
