Taking Credit for Others' Accomplishments
« on: Wed, 16 October 2013, 17:03:28 »
So without going into too much detail, I'm new to my current job.  There is one person above me, then the big boss.

The person above me went to the big boss yesterday and took credit for something I've been working on and they had nothing to do with whatsoever.  I feel as if I can't say anything and risk "rocking the boat" since I'm new.  Anyone else been in a similar position?

Happens pretty frequently.  I have two perspectives on it;

One - it's fairly normal for a team lead/manager to take credit for their team's accomplishments.

Two - it's readily apparent when a manager/supervisor takes personal credit for something done by their team.

Short version: I wouldn't stress about it, the truth will out.

End them. They disrespected you and this is the only way to not be seen as weak.

She's been there for years, so it would probably escalate into a he-said-she-said pile of BS with me looking for a new job.  I'm the kind of person that doesn't like song and dance and just says what I think, but when there are long-time cliques and alliances you have to deal with, being up front isn't always the winning option.

Dude, you do realize that "advice" was in jest, right?

Keep your head down, and look for opportunities to provide more accomplishments for  your supervisor to take credit for.  Eventually she'll either be promoted out of your group, or get a reputation as a credit-hog.  Either way the problem will resolve itself.

Well, she can't get any higher without becoming the boss herself, so I'll probably be working with her ad infinitum or until there is a confrontation one day.  I'm just pissed is all, with my work not even being recognized as my own and nothing I can really do unless I want to be unemployed.

Can't wait until I finish my second degree so I'm not a carpet for people like this to walk on, if that ever happens.

Can you give me some examples of how I can end them? I have a similar situation at work, but this person is trying to take me down while trying to go up the ladder.

As much as it stings, let it ride.

Patience will get you the appreciation you deserve, even if it takes a while.
Citizens United violates the essence of what made America a great country in its political system. Now it’s just an oligarchy, with unlimited political bribery being the essence of getting the nominations for president or to elect the president.
So now we’ve just seen a complete subversion of our political system as a payoff to major contributors, who want and expect and sometimes get favors for themselves after the election’s over.”

ah, this person above you is a woman? then it's obvious what to do.
(...)Whereas back then I wrote about the tyranny of the majority, today I'd combine that with the tyranny of the minorities. These days, you have to be careful of both. They both want to control you. The first group, by making you do the same thing over and over again. The second group is indicated by the letters I get from the Vassar girls who want me to put more women's lib in The Martian Chronicles, or from blacks who want more black people in Dandelion Wine.
I say to both bunches, Whether you're a majority or minority, bug off! To hell with anybody who wants to tell me what to write. Their society breaks down into subsections of minorities who then, in effect, burn books by banning them. All this political correctness that's rampant on campuses is b.s.

^^ I dunno seems like my boss is very quick to 'forget' things were discussed or not remember authorizing things when they go badly.
