So I got a chance to purchase a pair Google Glass.
« on: Thu, 20 February 2014, 13:29:36 »
The screenshot says it all, sadly I don't have nearly the enough money to own it...

I thought of three options:
1: Close my eyes and fantasize as though I have it
2: Sell the opportunity to someone else
3: Share the wealth: everyone chip in a little bit, and mail it around so that everyone can have a chance to try it.  ;D

So what do we think?

Option 3 would be ideal, but risky. I feel like with such new technology there'd be a high risk of it getting "lost in the mail" if they were to go on tour...

Also, how would we determine who ultimately ends up with them in the end?

If we could figure out all the details, I'd love to pitch in and get a chance to try these.

I am going to repost what I just posted on Slashdot in response to the same question:

There is a cheaper option

Instead of paying $1500 for Google Glass, why not make your own!
You'll need an old pair of sunglasses, a piece of cardboard, sticky tape and a felt-tip pen.

Remove the glasses from the glass frame, write "Punch Here!" on the cardboard and tape it to the upper part of the frame above the eyes. Ta da!

Why would you even sign up in the first place if you didn't have the money to buy it? It just takes away from people who actually have the money for it and wanted one, but wasn't lucky enough to get in.

Because they don't tell you it's going to be $1,500.

This.

To OP, I want to say, "I've been there". I too got the chance but had to drop it due to the price.

Wait, I'm pretty sure it was well advertised when it first came out for beta testers to buy that it cost $1,500... I'm sure I read/watched something on The Verge about it...

I personally just assumed they must have gone down in price since the first version. For some reason I was thinking they were around $500 now.

I for one was unaware of the price when I signed up, mine was a case of crowd-fund gone wrong, couple of friends backed out for the exact reason that CLiB mentioned, who keeps the device in the end.

It's just you. ;)

But in this case, you're technically not signing up to buy something. You're signing up for the opportunity to buy something.

Why can't these be given out for free, like they did with the Cr-48 Chromebooks? I got one of those from Google...

Yeah I was unaware of such a high price for it... But I think the price tag is not only for the product, but the endorsement of the idea of it. I think the most attractive aspect is the video capturing and photo taking, for it is so light-weighted compare to others with the same function (go pro, ivue).

So how many people are interested in the third option? if enough people chip in we can go for a run, and whoever pay the most got to own it? We can figure out the detail together if need be.

Probably something like option 1. These things seem like they'd be nothing more than a distraction when using. Even if I did have one and I don't know why I would I'd probably stop using it very quickly.

Seems as if its only practical purpose is the camera.
