Malaysia Airlines Plane Missing
« on: Fri, 07 March 2014, 22:46:08 »
I hope that any good news comes from this. I'm really worried how something this disastrous would happen in the 21st century.

230 passengers on board, planes been missing for 5 hours. (lost communication)

Source: http://news.sky.com/story/1222674/malaysia-airlines-plane-loses-contact
http://www.reddit.com/r/worldnews/comments/1zur6k/malaysia_airlines_plane_loses_contact_malaysia/

According to sources: the plane does not have enough fuel to still be in the air.

Imagine the 100-200 families and how they feel.

Such a ****ty situation.

I hope they're okay.

I do feel for those families.

In the big picture though, 815 million passengers travel on commercial airlines each year. It's really remarkable how rare accidents are. Remember, it's not the things you see in the news that you should fear, because those are the unusual occurences. It's the things that are too common to make the news that you should be worried about. Buckle up and pay attention when you're on the road!

So they still aren't saying what happened?

Plane still hasn't been found, there is a 6-9 mile oil slick on the ocean around the area it went missing though.

That's my home country's national airlines. It's a really sad situation at the moment & earlier this year a young pilot passed away as well from a domestic flight but that was a small plane. :(

morale of the story: don't steal passports.
(...)Whereas back then I wrote about the tyranny of the majority, today I'd combine that with the tyranny of the minorities. These days, you have to be careful of both. They both want to control you. The first group, by making you do the same thing over and over again. The second group is indicated by the letters I get from the Vassar girls who want me to put more women's lib in The Martian Chronicles, or from blacks who want more black people in Dandelion Wine.
I say to both bunches, Whether you're a majority or minority, bug off! To hell with anybody who wants to tell me what to write. Their society breaks down into subsections of minorities who then, in effect, burn books by banning them. All this political correctness that's rampant on campuses is b.s.

Maybe but the thing is the cabin was bullet proof and it disappeared at the safest point in flight. Without any distress calls.. So much mystery... :/.

The two people who travelled on stolen passports bought their tickets together.

I'm wondering whether there is some form of collusion. EG they could have brought on board some explosive ingredients that are harmless when alone, but lethal when mixed.

There is also a guy who travelled on a fake Chinese passport. A total of three people who bought their tickets from a Chinese airline using fake IDs.

I'm suspecting domestic terrorists from China. The fact that two men used the IDs of Europeans narrows down the likelihood to only one ethnic group in China.

Yeah I know, for some reason they covered their tracks too and bought continuing tickets to Amsterdam then to Frankfurt and somewhere else.. Maybe it was, but I feel sick just thinking about what may have happened over 55 hours now..

Yeah.. if it was an act of terrorism.. it happened so fast, there were no distress signal at all. I am thinking, the pilot might have dozed off while the co pilot was taking his rest, then the plane goes even further up in the sky and hit the ozone wall, and came down on high speed, when they realized it was too late, and then parts were flown away and crashed into the sea so deep, it'd be hard to find, but even that would have noticed all the airports anyway... so this is quite the mystery, and heartfelt for all the family, including the pilots.

I think it's an 80% likelihood of terrorists.

If it were an act of terrorism, you'd expect to see a group claiming responsibility... surreptitious acts defeat the whole point of terrorism.

They're saying that the plane probably went out further than originally thought after changing course and now they're looking in the Indian Ocean.   I think the most probable theory so far is that a catastrophic event occurred that resulted in depressurization of the plane causing the occupants to lose consciousness and loss of power resulting in the transponders turning off.  I'm sure they'll be making a movie about this in a few years where there is some secret plot and the plane lands in a secret airport.

A 777 must be worth a lot of money. Instead of terrorists, what about thieves? Just fly the thing into a remote area, hide it for a while, and sell it to a rich Chinese tycoon.

Wouldn't there be like serial numbers and uniquely keyed transponders and everything - kinda obvious it was stolen.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

... as if a rich Chinese tycoon would go through all that trouble instead of doing the sensible thing like buying a gulf-stream

doesn't jon travalta have like a 747? i know he has a few 707's, he's just a rich movie star, a chinese tycoon would just be a richard branson and buy a virgin airline.

regardless of what happened, the passengers on board are almost certainly not OK. i know we have quite a few malaysian and chinese (beijing-a, even) posters here. i hope everyone they know and love is OK.

Yeah that's what I'm thinking. It's been 8-9 days already, getting food to hold hostages for 230 people without suspicion is almost impossible. But I do hope that there is a chance.

Hmm. I'm a Malaysian but I'm currently overseas. I'm reading the news daily. The Chinese gov are really impatient about how the Malaysian Gov is handling the situation. Well, the sea is so vast. It's really gonna take awhile to pin point the location. But it's been almost a week+, I think the main thing is to look for the plane now. I don't even know if anyone is still alive.  :(

Some sources are suspecting that the captain may have committed suicide like the SilkAir Flight 185, in 1997. (Happened to also watch Mayday on Discovery yesterday night regarding Flight 185...)

I remember watching the documentary the results of SilkAir were really mixed. The NTSB thought it was the pilot committing suicide, (loss of 1.4m in stocks) (but he had like $200k surplus still if he liquified his assets and paid off loans). But in the USA there was a settlement with the rudder maker for the boeing 737 for $55million for a faulty rudder that they say caused the plane to spin and fall. I hate it when you have to accept an ending like that :/ I hate mysteries that go unsolved

The only problem is that there were two pilots.

How about this:
A terrorist/pirate/ninja or two enters the cabin and kills the pilots.  They then disable communications and increase the plane's altitude.  They then depressurize the plane and use the pilots' oxygen supply while they wait for the passengers to pass out once their 13 minute oxygen supply runs out.  They then decrease altitude and re-pressurize the plane, changing direction and heading for their airstrip where they can then either sell the plane or turn it into a weapon.
