There has been rumors about Unicomp making an SSK for at least 4 years. Someone necro'd a thread a while back saying in 2010 that Unicomp was working on an SSK. It seems to come up every so often. There's many reasons given as to why Unicomp hasn't come out with one (membrane issues, no molds, no plates, why would they retool for a niche enthusiast market, etc) but they haven't released it yet.

when I saw the title, I knew instantly it was April's Fool.

Unicomp will never do anything even faintly associated with Innovate or Risk Taking. It was probably pretty tough to convince them to switch from ps2 to USB keyboards.

It's a pity, really. Even I know a few things they could do to increase sales without taking risk.

Nice people, though.

They are the equivalent of Ukraine's peasants ok? They're conservative at heart and afraid of change even if the business is not getting them anywhere. I remember them saying they had some major innovation a while ago and it was a 'new' layout that was almost exactly the same as older layouts except it saved a tiny bit of space due to less plastic being used.

They won't even attempt to produce quieter keyboards eg using floss mod, so they can't sell to most potential buyers who want quieter keyboards.
Most of the modding can be done on your own once you break through the psychological barriers.

Now that I would buy from them...

Now, or not?

I'd seriously consider one, especially if the price was reasonable (i.e. < $150).
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

This would be a much better layout. Maybe they'll consider making winkeyless/winkey versions (if they're ACTUALLY going to do this...)

They also need something better than 2KRO, and black versions as well...

Would love to hear what you can reveal about it if anything.

Two designs were considered, one from them and one from myself. As a goodwill gesture, I rendered both for them. It appears they picked theirs. I suggested updated Model F capsense technology to achieve NKRO, but whether they decide to do that remains to be seen.

If it took them this long to do a new SSK, then I anticipate a pcb based capsense design to come out sometime shortly after the heat death of the universe.

why are people still speculating? April Fools' is totally over by now. It's the 3rd where I am.

Unicomp will innovate no faster than a snail can sprint. You want them to do something, look for the biggest shareholder, buy him out, stack the board with geekhackers and let's see some action.
Most of the modding can be done on your own once you break through the psychological barriers.

Oh ye of little faith! A competent engineering team (even a small one) could do this in a couple of months by borrowing various electrical and mechanical parameters from the Model F design, adapting them to the new layout, and using more recent chips, etc., on the controller board.

I live pretty close to Unicomp. Can I be the proud rep from Geekhack that throws down the briefcase full of GH money and says, "I'M BUYING THIS PLACE"?

You should comment in the thread I linked, your renders have come up there as well.
