League of Keyswitches!
« on: Sun, 11 May 2014, 11:23:26 »
Does anyone have a recommendation of which Cherry MX keyswitches would be best for League of Legends, so far it seems to be either brown or black? Is the feedback on the browns a hinderance to reactions (as this is quite an important factor in league or any other MOBA)?

It really doesn't matter. Get the switch that you think you'll enjoy typing on the most.

Honestly, for league, it doesn't matter what switch since the apm isn't very high and I've played league using 'typing' switches like blues and ergo clears.

What matters is that you're comfortable with them, and that they're not too heavy.

If you can get used to linear switches like reds, then you'll find that you can spam buttons faster; yet it really isn't necessary for league.

It's pretty evenly spread among pro players. A lot of them use Blues and browns, but that's mostly because of Razer/Logitech sponsorships. I played LoL on blacks and was gold before I stopped playing. So it really doesn't matter at all.

I think then I will probably go for blacks as linear switches supposedly last longer than the ones with feedback and I don't want to spend £150 on a keyboard too frequently :P

Blacks arent that great to type on since they require more force. You could try reds which are a lighter black .

Yeah the commercial crap is contagious
Even razer's supposed '60 million clicks' is more like 'up to 60 million' and as low as 20; just ignore this marketing crap and research stuff through some reputable reviewers or websites.

If you click on common switch types it says the advantages of blacks/linear is they last slightly longer!
It does also kind of make sense, especially with less longevity on the blues (more moving parts) and the linear one's will move the metal leaf less than the ones with feedback.

In theory, since blacks don't have as many friction points and a heavier spring, there should be less contact with the actuation mechanisms. However in practice, it doesn't really make a difference IMO. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong.

Honestly, I've tried all the Cherry MX switches besides Clears and Greens. For gaming, and I've played a lot of games on these boards (LoL included), Cherry MX Red all day.

Opinion is highly subjective of course, but I love the fact that if I need to act fast, the slightest reach over to the key and it will actuate. So much easier to spam keys on Reds. As a Rogue in WoW, the ease of the linear switch felt very crisp while spamming to make sure the ability executed the second it was off cool down.

Blues used to advertise a lesser number of actuations before failure. Perhaps he read it out of the cherry datasheets.

for gaming, clears can be nice, as they actuate just past the tactile bump, so it is very easy to bounce them at that point.

I play a lot of LoL on reds.  I used a brown board for gaming before this one, and I definitely prefer reds for this purpose.  But your mouse is going to have a much great effect than your keyboard on league performance (and for most games).

I used to play League with a Razer rubber dome one-hand-keypad thingy, and that was definitely NOT okay. If I missed slightly and pressed a key too far from the centre it would sometimes stick and not actuate. Not all the time, but often enough that I wouldn't want to go back to using one. I've had no issues with any of the mechanical switches I've played with.

Got diamond on a mix of blues, Stock Clear, Buckling Spring (even with 2KRO...this game is so low APM lol), 62g ergo clear, 62g lubed blacks.

Played a few norms with a 55g Topre and did fine.  As long as you know how to use the switch you have, you'll be fine.  That being said, from a switch design perspective, blues are garbage for gaming but any other switch will work (I love blues, but just look at how they're designed...no way was this made with gaming in mind).

I recommend trying panda clears or ghost blacks.

I'm starting to realize that Ghost Blacks (black stem, clear spring) is the best for 90% of gaming.  Recommend everyone to try gaming for 3-5 hours on ghost blacks before judging and dismissing.

Do the Maths: At either 20 millions or 50 millions strokes before a key fails, there's more chance something else will have broken by then.

As for the choice of switches, just try to decide the one you would prefer to use. And don't think your keyboard will increase your skill. You won't be better but you should still enjoy more using your keyboard if it's a good one.

Precisely.  Besides with thorpies, the silicone will split before the actual spring wears out.  With a Cherry you just de-solder/remove the older worn out switch with a newer model and hey presto, you're back in the game  :thumb: .

LMAO

On a serious note: with consumers and gamers becoming more knowledgeable about Cherry MX and mechanical switches, why would they switch (no pun intended) to a knock off? This is why I will only buy Razer mice and nothing else from them.

It really doesn't matter. Get the switch that you think you'll enjoy typing on the most.

I agree, I've played quite a lot of League at a moderate level (high-silver, gold nearly!) and I've used all sorts of switches. Blues were fine, Reds were nice (maybe a little better for playing, but since I'm used to Blues I like them more), and now I use Topre. Most of my champions are pretty mechanically difficult (lots of Zed mostly), but it's not like you're ever going to be pressing switches at StarCraft speed, just in short combinations, so anything was fine for me. I just recommend you use whatever feels best, sorry that it's so unhelpful!
