Topre Tour

Are there any going on right now CONUS (I know DT has euro tours) or planned for the future?

Akimbo has suggested he might run an HHKB tour. Other than that, there aren't any. I've been considering trying to buy one for cheap as a tour but "cheap" is hard to come by.

Get a good deal on a used Topre keyboard. If you don't like it then sell it back for what you got it for, you pay for the shipping. Then you aren't limited to only being able to keep the keyboard for a certain amount of time.

I still need to sit down with a 55g Topre board for a week, if just so I can walk away and go meh.  They're just so damn expensive.

First of all, no one ever said Topre was the be all, end all for everyone. If Dustin tried it and didn't like it, its not like he beat some hidden system and should be revered. Plenty of people have tried Topre and prefer MX. jdcarpe comes to mind right away, though there are many others. Just because the people who like it are more vocal about it doesn't mean the entire forum should have to. If you haven't learned this hobby is all subjective and based solely on how everything feels to you personally, I don't know what to tell you...

As to the tour, the problem is there are so many different configurations. If Hoffman toured his FC660C, you would only feel one type. You might love it or hate it, but what if that one configuration isn't for you? Would you disregard all Topre boards then? That would be like trying Browns and saying all MX sucks because you didn't like them.

This is very true and is the inherent risk of an incomplete tour.   :-\  Also, the other things you said are true as well.

Great post Moose! I always thought cptn badass was nuts for not liking Topre. It all comes down to personal preference. If they were a bit cheaper Id keep one in my collection. But like he said try each weight and see if you like any.

Not just each weight, but also plate- vs case-mounting (HHKB). And even then, people say the FC660C feels different than the 45g Realforce, even though they're both 45g plate-mounted. Let me list the most common ways (correct me if I miss any):

45g plate-mounted Realforce
45g plate-mounted Leopold FC660C
55g plate-mounted Realforce
45g case-mounted HHKB
55g case-mounted HHKB (have to modify a stock HHKB with 55g domes)
variable weight plate-mounted Realforce
30g plate-mounted Realforce
All of the above with Silent in them

Then there is lubing or dental banding. I mean, Topre is like MX. It's not just TOPRE and that's it. There is still preference in it.

I think a tour is just to give you a taste of what could be. For example, my love for Alps started with a Black Alps Dell AT101W. Obviously it's not going to tell me what a linear or tactile switch will feel like but it gave me an idea.

Until we get a modded Topre board that has *all* these options it's going to be hard to test. And probably impossible with just one board because of how the HHKB is mounted vs the Realforces.

So a tour is still worth it in my opinion and it'd be great if Hoffman could get it started :P.

Completely agree with this. I have been wanting to try 55g Topre as well. That cost though.

I'd be interested in a Topre tour. Never tried one, so I'd be open to any of the variants.

I feel the same way.  I had no idea what topre even felt like until I tried it out once, and even though there are subtle differences between the types moose listed, topre is still distinct enough that getting a taste of that genre is helpful (IMO).

I'm not sure exactly how to start a tour (I guess start a thread, huh? :P ), but I'd be happy to help out (lend the FC660C).  Not sure if we can get anyone to offer up an HHKB or a Realforce, but I think it's worth getting started.

Oooh– I'd love to be part of a FC660C tour to compare with my HHKB :D

I don't think we need multiple boards in the mix to get started.

Great post! :) I tried all except all 30 and all 45 realforce.

Man with the Topre collection I had, I could've put together a hhkb, Leo, and 87u w different weights, dental band or not, silent slider or not, mx slider, lube or not. Dang..
