Serious question:

Why is it okay to use the likeness of famous movie characters in your designs, but not the designs of other keycaps?

For what it's worth, I don't approve of either.

Are Korean forum classifieds full of CC fakes yet? Do they have rules implemented to prevent their resales to unwary buyers?

Apparently I'm running for President against CBA.  I have not prepared a speech for such an occasion.

Instead, I offer my finest cheeses to all that may be swayed by such an offer.

Also, beer for everyone!!

Also also, thanks to my early supporters.  Phil Ken Sebben and Topre are two very important things to me.   :thumb:

"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Not sure what to make of this, other than I'm disappointed with the extremely childish way it was handled on both sides.  I joined GeekHack thinking this community was above that level of petty bickering and schoolyard name-calling.  I guess I was wrong.

Some of you could use a lesson in economics.  When you force exclusivity on a product you create an abundance of demand.  When the demand reaches a threshold, knockoffs will inevitably appear to satisfy it.  This is not to say I support knockoffs.  But if you want your clacks/brobots/gasmasks/whatever to remain limited and "special", then you should prepare for there to be knockoffs.  Because people want to buy them and somebody, somewhere is going to seize that opportunity.  Welcome to Economics 101.

It's also somewhat hypocritical to vehemently defend GH Maker keycaps and in the very next breath, run off to GMK IMSTO to beg for your copyrighted images to be printed/subbed onto caps and buy them by the shipping container.  Guess what, that image/icon/logo belongs to somebody too -- maybe a big, faceless, corporate somebody who doesn't post on GeekHack, but still somebody interested in defending his copyright and his intellectual property.  Is it only totally cool to steal someone's work when they aren't GH members?  Where do you draw the line?

What a mess.

Edit: I chose my example poorly.  I probably should have said IMSTO when I said GMK.  I'll leave the original intact so that all may witness my shame.

The greater point remains.

I can't say just how many times I hear this, and how many times I have to reply with 'I am one ****ing person, I make as many as I can possibly make in the time I have'. There's no 'exclusivity' or 'purposefully limiting production'. Cop-out excuses like this are the norm lately. It doesn't give anyone license to make fakes just because the original creator can't produce them on a large scale.

This is a small community, and I cater to that. I am not catering to mass produced parts. Nor do I have the ability or desire to do so.

Your argument is that we should be OK with it, and move on. If it directly affected you, I guarantee you wouldn't have the same attitude. So you can sit comfortable from your uninvolved bystanders position and spit out opinions on the matter, but until you actually experience on the level of affecting you in a personal way, you really have no opinion.

I can't say just how many times I hear this, and how many times I have to reply with 'I am one ****ing person, I make as many as I can possibly make in the time I have'. The limited availability of Bro Caps (as well as other artisan keycaps) is part of the appeal.

If you were to make an unlimited number of them at rock bottom prices so that everyone could have as many as they wanted, you might as well send the design to Tai Hao and commission them to make 104 key sets of Bro Caps so everyone can have a keyboard full.
In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

run off to GMK to beg for your copyrighted images to be printed/subbed onto caps and buy them by the shipping container.  Guess what, that image/icon/logo belongs to somebody too

Could you be more specific here? What do you mean? I've never heard of GMK printing anything it doesn't have rights to? thanks.

he probably used GMK wrong and meant like SP.  Or more general IMSTO these days.

Speaking of GMK, wonder why there isn't much of an uproar about trying to get TaiHao a GMK set to duplicate cherry profile and GMK thickness.

To be fair, BB makes a pretty huge quantity of caps, compared to every other artisan cap maker I'm aware off... He has, how many original designs now? And how many variations and colour schemes does has he produced?
The only thing that really makes BB's limited is that the people who get them don't sell them on like they do with clacks becasue BB has done his best to try and prevent an insane aftermarket popping up.

You're not and I agree that blaming someone and saying they should expect and accept counterfeits because demand outstrips their means of production is stupid.  Some markets rely on scarcity from the seller to do well.  Artisan goods are one such area where scarcity due to low production rates is a good thing for the artisan.
