They're lying around (closet, shelves, floor). There are dozens of them. Only keep one on my desktop's tray and one in the backpack.

Although, I'd like to sell off everything but one or two home ergo boards (ErgoDox, and Axios or Maltron in the future), one or two portable ergo boards (TypeMatrix, and Planck or Atreus in the future) and something modded for gaming and #swag (QFR).

I have them in their original boxes for now but I will probably find a nice way to display them when I move out next year.

1. Current rotation: 3-4 keyboards on my desk.

2. New, but not in current rotation: in original boxes on shelves in a walk-in closet.

3. Old, awaiting restoration/USB conversion: in boxes on shelves in the study and a walk-in closet.

Recently, I sold all of my new Cherry mx keyboards and some old Alps keyboards. However, I then bought a new WASD V2 87 barebones keyboard in order to have one Cherry board and to have something for my Cherry keycap sets. I also bought another vintage Alps to harvest caps for my new KBP V60 Matias Quiet Click Mini keyboard.

Someday I would like to have a dust-proof illuminated cabinet with shelves to display keyboards, especially vintage IBMs that are now awaiting restoration and USB conversion.

I wish I could do what I did with my fountain pen collection. When that started getting out of hand I just bought one of these things:

http://www.pencase.co.uk/

and that solved the problem completely. They're pens. Store them right and the don't take up much room at all. Not so easy with keyboards, though come to think of it it's actually been cheaper to collect vintage keyboards than vintage pens. You can get a vintage keyboard for ~$30 + ~$40 shipping + 15% because OPEC. A vintage pen will almost invariably run you at least $100 + ~$30 shipping + 15% because OPEC.

Why can't I ever stay on topic.

I didn't know people were collecting pens. Never thought of it.

I'm not a pen collector guy, but there is a pen I want, that was made back in the day that runs about 1-150 on ebay.

I just love well designed items. (rotring 600 if it matters )

Many more than collect keyboards. The difference between a good fountain pen and a ****ty ballpoint is rather analogous to the difference between a good mechanical keyboard and a ****ty rubber dome. And there are so many pens...

That would be a pencil.

I have the pencil and love it, but there is/was a roller ball version of it thats no longer made. Basically built exactly like the pencil. ( I have a newer version of the pen, but its pretty plasticy and not as premium feeling as the 600 pencil )

Well there are more people using pen than people using keyboard I think. And older generation are more keen towards pen than keyboard. Not saying you're old though, don't misunderstand me :)

I sell my extras and try to not keep more than 2 at a time.  :'(

One day when I have a larger disposable income, maybe I'll increase my limit to 3 or 4 boards.

I'm trying to do the same but just not to end up with 15 boards when I would only use 2-3. I'm just looking for the keyboard that I like the most, I'm not that much of a collector.

About 18 months ago I bought my third. Now I have 9.
Can we get them to build the Alps ten feet higher and get Cherry to pay for it?

That's incredible :O

Thankfully keyboards are relatively cheap and take almost no extra time at all compared to other "adult" hobbies. My keyboard journey is almost done. hopefully I can sell the boards I don't use.  Just yesterday I bought 2 sets on keycaps on massdrop because they were so cheap and I could use them.

Keyboards might be a bit cheaper than fountain pens but shipping is terrible. Dealing with collectable things online is about the only time I wish I were American. Can't you guys go into another recession so our dollar can get artificially strong again?

You really haven't been here that long then hah...

It gets more expensive when you have so many boards to buy things for simultaneously, as well as buying things for boards you don't even own...

Welcome to Wallethack!
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

There are at least 10 keyboards in this mess.
