Kinda regretting lubing cherry mx reds FML
« on: Thu, 25 December 2014, 19:25:01 »
So first time lubing after spending so many hours un-soldering, lubing, and re-soldering my keyboard I find I don't find my keyboard attractive to type on anymore. Its feels sluggish and has a slow reflex Prob goofed and applied to much or might get a heavier spring. Thoughts on a fix? used https://ctrlalt.io/ thin lube

You only need a very small amount of lube.

Can't wait to try some Gateron's - I hear they are very smooth out of the box.

There is a Gateron switch tester up on Mass Drop now.  There was a hint dropped that if enough interest develops that switches may be offered for sale.

Give it a week or two before you do anything. I had a similar problem with MX clears and a bit of usage helped a lot. I was lucky enough to have a plate where I could open the switches, so I did switch from 62g to 65g, but the still felt sluggish for a week or so. They got better with some wear though.

Getting a custom plate isn't that easy though. I wish I hade a bunch. Soldering fumes has made me stupid :)

OP! As suggested, give the lube some time. If it doesn't clear up and still feels sluggish after a while I then consider desoldering and fitting a heavier spring. Or buy new red switches. Worst case.

Whats the purpose if the plate anyway? My guess is that it is used to protect the pcb from rubbish

Mount switches straight. It does a better job of it than the PCB mount holes.

That's not what it's for. Plates don't mount the switches any straighter than PCB mount holes.

It makes the switches more stable, as it holds them rigidly in place. It stops any kind of flex you would have while the switches are just mounted on a PCB. It of course makes the board more heavy and 'solid feeling' too.

You're not exactly supposed to be opening these things. There's a reason it voids your warranty.

I'm surprised. I think there's a large difference in feel between plate and PCB mount boards. I could definitely distinguish between the two by feel alone.

It's not 'that too'. It's 'only that'. Really, switches mounted just on a PCB will mount perfectly straight, so long as the switches have the two extra plastic pins and so long as the holes are the correct size on the PCB [I have encountered one PCB where they were too big, and they could potentially be mounted a bit off-center].

I've seen some odd alignment issues with PCB mount boards.

I dunno, I've had a lot of weird experiences with older boards.

warranty was meant to be voided!!!

You can't claim to be a real gher until you void the warranty on everything electronic you own (except for maybe the hard disk).

I'm certainly not a real gher, since I have not tried repairing my TV or handphone before.

Yeah that too I guess

I've never noticed a huge difference.

Less of a difference on eg a poker, but g80-8113 is floppy.

Some boards that done have a in switch LED or diode I think are bad PCB mount. Stabilizing the front of the switch with something is very important.
