Topre lube problem
« on: Wed, 18 March 2015, 12:26:42 »
So recently i came up with an idea, lubing my hhkb... but i stuck with buying the gpl103. Question is can i use a mixture of gpl 205 and gpl 105? I mean is this method affect the typing experience to much ? I also use the dental bands.  ;D

I actually use a mixture of 105 and 205. It works wonderfully, just make sure you're applying the thinnest coat possible. As for dental bands, I suggest tossing them out and doing the o2dazone mod. It completely fixes the issue of impeding travel that's caused by dental bands.

50-50 is fine. Try it on one, and if you don't like the feel of it, you can add more oil to get a more fluid mixture.

Not if you replace it back on correctly.

when i unassemble it, the domes fall off right away, is this normal? One more thing i feel it a little bit hard to type sometimes, feels like the domes are being hardened..

would it be a big mistake to use only grease (205 for example) for topre sliders?

does anyone know of someone selling the silicone bands that o2dazone made or something similar? I checked out some old threads but nothing there.

You buy silicone sheets and punches and punch them out.

There have been a few people who have made them and mentioned they might sell them but I've sent many PM's and never got replies from any of them.

I've sent out a couple of PMs myself after checking the threads but also no reply.

I'm afraid I'll order the wrong stuff and silicone sheet but I like the idea of purchasing from another geek hacker.

o2dazone's thread has direct amazon links to what he used:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005584QJI/ref=oh_details_o00_s01_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Some have said the 0.020" reduced the travel a bit too much, so you could try 0.010" thickness for a similar price:
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B005584R1U/ref=biss_dp_t_asn

The 12x12 sheet is more than enough, I screwed up a bunch and still only used 4 rows of punches

You can achieve less reduction in travel (so probably a better, unchanged, feel), by using my method here:
  https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=49046.0

The landing pads I use are sold by EliteKeyboards:
  http://www.elitekeyboards.com/products.php?sub=access,slpads&pid=sl120_cs

The landing pads method is probably faster than punching silicone rubber, and after using a clothing iron on them they end up being thinner => no reduction of the Topre tactility.
