Ducky Shine Zero or Ducky Shine 4?
« on: Fri, 15 May 2015, 05:12:19 »
Not exactly sure which one to choose, but should I go and save myself or few dollars with the Ducky Shine Zero ($149 AUD), or go with the more expensive Ducky Shine 4($199)?

P.S. Currently, about $1.29 AUD is equal to about $1 USD.

Welcome to Geekhack!

Depends on what features you want.  Either should be a good keyboard, but Shine Zero has less lighting effects, only single colour LEDs, and non-detachable cable.

Shine 4 has many more lighting modes, multi-coloured LEDs and detachable cable (it has detachable cable, right?  Shine 1, 2 and 3 did).
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

It does have a detactable cable :).

Lighting doesn't matter the most to me, but it'll be nice to have. I'll see how much I can afford, then decide. At most, I want the Ducky Cities Space Bar Set, as flaunting my nationality on my keyboard sounds like fun.

I have a ducky zero with blacks (not sure if it is different from ducky shine zero).
I didn't know what was a ping before buying (and soon returning) that keyboard.
It drives you crazy.

...whats a ping?....

I'm pretty sure the main difference between the ducky zero and the ducky shine zero is the backlighting.

The ping is the vibration of the switch, that gets amplified by the plate, resunting in a ping, it really seems to make a... ping!

Ducky zero with blacks= very pingy
Cherry mx 3.0 with reds= no ping

So mainly the sound made by the keyboard itself, right?

It doesn't seem that bad to me though.

Sydney skyline though, not Melbourne :blank:

Regardless, there are very few things more Australian than the Sydeny Harbour Bridge and the Sydeny Opera House!

I would say go with the Shine Zero unless you plan swap out your boards and care a lot about the dual leds. I have the Ducky Shine 4 69 Fire Edition myself and I don't use it all that often. I would prefer to save the 50 dollars because dual lighting + detachable cable just isn't worth it. With the Shine Zero you also have TKL whereas the Ducky Shine 4 will not have a TKL released (Heard from a head staff at Ducky). The Shine 4 has different case colors too if you decide to go for that option.
