Keyboards with built-in capslock+ctrl swapping?
« on: Thu, 28 May 2015, 01:08:24 »
I've become accustomed to having capslock and ctrl switched, by use of the hardware dipswitches on my keyboard.

I know you can swap capslock+ctrl  in software, but (I frequently switch desktops, keyboards, and operating systems) it's annoying to have to keep this setting in-synch..

The question is, which models offer hardware-based switches to swap capslock and ctrl? Alternatively, which keyboards offer firmware-based programming to do the equivalent? So far, I've seen capslock+ctrl swapping on the Ducky Shine 3, Leopold FC900R, Leopold FC660C, Leopold FC660M, Realforce 87UB and 87 10AE. What other vendors / models offer this functionality?

He asked what OTHER models have it. Jesus.
It's a good width!  If it's half-width it's too narrow, and full-width is too wide.

Because the list isn't complete, and hitaki is looking for boards not on their list already :)

Off the top of my head, the KUL ES-87 has this functionality. I'm not sure how key remapping works on the poker series of boards, but it's possible that they could be remapped in the same way.

HHKB has control in that spot by default, not sure where caps is hidden in that layout though.

I've looked at the Pok3r which doesn't seem to have it via hardware switch, but I think you can program it into one of the layers.

The V60 mini has dipswitches, and seems like one option lets you configure capslock to ctrl, and ctrl to fn key.

As you pointed out, I'm interested in what other models have this feature - as I have one TKL keyboard I quite like, except it doesn't have this built in.

The Noppoo Choc Mini has a Caps/Left-Ctrl swap function, Fn+F9 does the trick. No aditional software/firmware required, simply plug and swap.
I think the Nano also has this function, but I'm not sure.

IIRC the Northgate Omnikey has this. It's a DIP switch setting.

I have my Phantom remapped. Not through hardware of course but when you build the firmware you just tweak the keymap in the TMK config or using EasyAVR.

Off the top of my head, the KUL ES-87 has this functionality.
The great thing about the KUL is that just doesn't swap which codes the keys send but that it also comes with additional keycaps with these legends and has a LED for the Caps Lock key in the lower left corner.

I have my Phantom remapped.
I have my Phantom mapped to have two left Control keys. This did require that I wrote code in the firmware especially to handle this case. If you happen to press both keys then you want the "key up" event to occur when you release the last pressed key, not the first pressed key.

Kinesis Advantage allows you to remap any key to any other location with a few keystrokes.
E.g. sappping LCtrl/CapsL would be something like: Prog+F12 LCtrl CapsL CapsL Ctrl Prog+F12

IIRC the Northgate Omnikey has this. It's a DIP switch setting.

Your recall is correct.  Northgate sometimes made feature changes and produced some keyboards without the dip switches, but most Omnikeys have dip switches that allow switching Caps, Ctrl and Alt (and include replacement key caps), not to mention changing to other keyboard layouts, such as Dvorak.  A manual that explains all this is on-line at: http://deskthority.net/w/images/3/38/Northgate_OmniKey_Users_Guide_Apr92.pdf
