I need a HHKB therapy
« on: Sun, 16 August 2015, 20:54:27 »
I bought my first HHKB (black) around 2 weeks ago and I ENJOYED it so much. Threw out all my other keyboards pretty much because there's no better feeling than typing on Topre. Not satisfied with just owning one, I looked at pretty pictures of the white model in GH and Reddit. I thought about it and started to develop reasoning to buy another HHKB. We'll put it at work then!

So I went ahead and buy the white model. I didn't think of buying the type-S at first cause I researched about it and watch YT videos and decided the stock one sounded nicer. Or so I thought.

Now I can't sleep thinking about that type-S (the actual marking in the top right of the case). Is it crazy to get my 3rd one in just 3 weeks? I can maybe put the normal white one in my other office, and use the type-S at home.

3 HHKBs in 3 weeks is pretty hardcore dude

if you already have a white one and black one, maybe look at other topre boards like a RealForce or something

See the thing is that I don't really dig the aesthetics of those RF keyboards. I like em small and minimalist :D

The only other keyboard that I might buy too next is the Novatouch TKL. The thought of Topre + DSA Dolch is too irresistible.

You can buy sliders soon and replace your HHKB sliders with MX/Topre Sliders...Would be some work but probably better than getting a Novatouch (and cheaper).

The sliders mentioned in this group buy. They were only available along with purchase of a keyset, but they will be available on their own in the future.

Did you also buy the printed and blanks caps for your HHKB? You know you want one of each.

My black and white came with printed, so yeah I bought them their respective blank keys.

Gonna buy the type-S with blanks I think.

Landing pad mod. Do it. It's more satisfying than the type-S cause you know you did it yourself.

Now that it's come in to your mind you're going to have to get it. But the type s isn't great imo. It doesn't sound like a topre and the feel isn't as good either. Forget about the price making it seem better and ask yourself. Do you want a more quite board that lacks a little soul in comparison to the Stock?

Which landing pad should I get? I have no clue which one fits it perfectly.

@Sencha: I thought about that too for the longest time, but as you said it, once you thought about it, it sticks in your head. I'm a sucker for exterior look, so in a way, it's that Type-S badging that makes me want it even more xD

These: http://elitekeyboards.com/products.php?sub=access,slpads&pid=sl120_cs

But it takes quite a lot of work. https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=49046.0

Also, another batch of these are being produced http://deskthority.net/help-f53/silencing-rings-for-topre-rf-or-hhkb-t10051.html if you are not up to the work involved of the ironed landing pad method. Just read up on the thread for more information.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with having 3 or more HHKBs!
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

had my hands on the whole topre spectrum. hhkb is the only one i find is nice to use. That being said, even then i dont find it the most rewarding switch, but its in all fairness the board you will often pick up and use if you have it because its so middle of the road and amazing at what it does. side by side comparisons however always leave me feeling its not really worth it at the end of the day unless you are typing all the time or really just care that much about feeling over all other considerations. Because tbh the layout is ****, and the feet are **** and it is lacking in quality for the price.

real talk.

Layout can be great, depending on your needs.  And the feet are fixed easily with some aftermarket feet.

I liked my old HHKB a lot, but hated the layout. This was before anybody had made any custom controllers for them.

I think if I still had one on hand, I'd be using hasu's controller. Assuming that fixed all my complaints about the HHKB, then yes, buying a second, or even a third wouldn't be unwarranted IMO :)

Or a mat under the keyboard. I cut a Razer Goliathus mouse pad, about 60% of which is used at my home desk with the remainder under my HHKB. It does a good job of keeping the board from sliding around my work desk.

This. I always have a mat under my keyboard. At home i use a Goliathus extended for both my mouse and keyboard. At work i use a trackball, but keep and intel pad that came with my processor under my FC660c

OP, I completely understand you!

After purchasing my first HHKB, I wanted the other color scheme and got it within 2 months of the first one. Then I also longed for the Type-S due to the upstroke on the normal HHKB. But ofcourse, I couldn't bring myself to make another investment like this for the time being. But I definitely wanted it lol

I'm very, very glad I finally bought a HHKB a few weeks ago.

But I don't think I'll need another one. Topre boards are odd, in a great way, because I never really get that feeling they need more (except PBT spacebars). I've either modded, or plan to mod, all of my MX or IBM boards, but I don't get this sensation with Topre. Sure, I'd definitely put artisans/blanks on my Topre boards. But full out mods? Nah.

OP, get a 55g Realforce. Try it, if you don't like it, swap the domes in your HHKB so you can have a 55g one.

I had the opportunity to type on a HHKB Lite (rubberdome) at a computer show.

I know this will sound like heresy ... and yes while the HHKB Pro does feel better I didn't think the Lite was as bad as people made it out to be.

I haven't heard many say the lite is terrible. I have heard more "It's one of the better Rubber domes out there" type of thoughts.

It's pretty pricy for a rubber dome, though. I'd rather get a cheaper mechanical keyboard.

Loved the HHKB at first sight and even more after the first test drive. The layout and 60% form factor are perfect for me, I like Topre switches, and the dye-sub PBT keycaps are beautiful.

After getting the standard white and standard black versions, I finally got a Type-S. However, I prefer the sound, feel, and looks of a modded black HHKB with my own silencing rings. I also installed 55g domes in my silenced HHKB and put a set of Topre blue alphas on it.

Sometimes I wish the HHKB had a steel plate like an RF or Novatouch, and I have these other keyboards in my rotation. However, I come back to the HHKB for the 60% form factor and layout (although I use software to remap other keyboards to a HHKB-like layout).

BTW, the silencing rings really transform the Novatouch, so that you can better experience the Topre thock, especially with OEM or SA profile caps. Nevertheless, as good as the Novatouch can be, I still prefer my HHKBs (two at my two workstations at work and one at home).

Enjoy!

I dusted off one of my RF 87Us and shelved the HHKB today. I'm afraid of completely transitioning to the dark side.
Yeah I'm looking to buy one to replace my HHKB :-[

I'm thinking of doing the dental band mod on one of them in the future, but I'm concerned about the shorter travel distance I've been reading about.

According to PFU, the factory silenced HHKB Type-S has reduced key travel. 3.8mm vs 4mm for the standard HHKB.
