List the keyboards you have tried
« on: Thu, 03 September 2015, 00:10:43 »
Maybe this has been done before I honestly don't want to look, but rowdy will be awake in a few hours and he'll search for it.

So anyway, post up the list of keyboards you've tried, be as detailed or simple as you want, switch types, caps, leds, layouts, likes, dislikes, general impressions all up to you.

  • QFR Mx Red ANSI: no like ansi, no like Red for typing (sold)
  • Poker2 mx black: typing ok,but stock black not very good, not programmable enough (sold)
  • FaceU with Wyse mx black: love this board, I just don't have the keycaps to fill it atm (1.25 bottom row)
  • Nerd60 62g Clears (stock poker case): Love it, my current mobile board, set up with a bottom row I can fill will my azerty, Gon NerdGui is fantastic, I'll need to find a beautifull case and fix pingy spacebar one day.
  • RS96 65g gateron clears: love it, was my main board untill very recently, I'm not huge fan of lightsaver layout, but acrylic case feel very nice.
  • G80-5000 Vintage browns: Best typing experience on a keyboard, vintage browns are the ****, only problem with this board is it's so good I'm afraid to ruin it, so I stopped using it. I'll take it out of the closet soon
  • LZ-SQ Gateron black: My new main board, love everything about it, best layout, best design, great typing experience with a sturdy plate. I'll soon fill my second pcb/plate with vintage browns, to enhance the typing experience.
  • Poker2 mx blue (not mine): tried for a week, clicky is the great typing experience but the sound is annoying.
  • Novatouch silenced with spicebar method (not mine) : great board, I'm considering buying one, but would have no use for it. I tried it before the silencing, the sound was annoying.
  • HHKB 55G silenced (not mine): feels bad, really not my thing.
  • Various G81 with my whites: terrible, only good to harvest caps

I do not recall such a thread, and a quick search does not turn up anything sufficiently close.
:D
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

* Silenced Topre
* Fujitsu leaf-spring
* Logitech Omron ROMER-G
* Alps buckling spring

Seriously. I've been very fortunate enough to have been able to try tons of stuff. I will say I've realized I have a glaring hole in not having tried or played with many Space Invader boards.

Meetups are one of the big reasons I can't remember - one, because people bring tons of stuff (especially HaaTa :P) and two, i usually get drunk after the meetups... so i can't always recall EVERYTHING i tried that day

All buckling spring and beam spring.

All alps.

Most of Cherry and Cherry clones, expect the heavier stuff.

And more rubber dome than I can fathom.

My keyboard history goes back 60+ years.  I've used:

1950s: Royal Portable Manual Typewriter (belonged to my dad), Underwood manual office typewriter; Smith-Corona portable electric (like the one pictured under my username; that one got me through college and graduate school)

1960s and 1970s:  The Smith Corona, then IBM electric and IBM selectric typewriters

1980s:  keyboard on the original Osborne luggable (had a couple of those); Leading Edge keyboard (nice board; sorry I don’t still have it); whatever came with PC’s from  Dell and Gateway, and my first Northgate Omnikey (I fell in love).

1990s:  More Omnikeys, Avant Stellar (Omnikey knockoff, but not as good), 2 or 3 Thinkpad keyboards

2000s: Mostly Omnikeys except for Thinkpads and an iMac board.

2010s: See list below of current boards
IBM Model M |Matias Mini Quiet Pro|Plum 84EC-S|RealForce 103U-UW & 87U-UW|Omnikey Ultra T| 2 Omnikey Ultras| WASD V2| Xmit Hall Effect|

Tried for how long?

? - a terminal keyboard that was really, really nice, can't remember what it was now
? - another terminal keyboard that was not as nice, some of the keys stuck a bit (on lots of different terminals)
Televideo 9xx terminal - kinda ok, but old, reasonable feel for its age
IBM probably beamspring - extremely heavy, extremely loud, connected to an old, heavy IBM terminal of questionable origin
NEC APC H4100E - one of my all time favourite keyboards, and one that I learned many of my programming skills using
VZ200 chicklet - no comment
Commodore 64 - a classic, but I seem to recall I didn't like the feel much
System 80 - ok, kinda plain, another one that I learned a lot of my programming skills using
Apple ][ - ok, can't remember much about it now
Apple ][c - seemed a bit small, although that might have just been the computer size back in the day
? - some really old HP terminal, very old keyboard, good feel for its age
HP 700/96 terminal - sticky keys, still got one of those terminals at work
VT220 terminal - nice big keyboard, but rubber dome, average
VT420 terminal - see VT220
Sun type 5 - nice square keys, good colours, keys were a bit sticky though
Link terminal - MX blacks - not vintage (according to the logos on the switches), but buttery smooth, still got that one and still use it
Apple white keyboard - broken space bar, so I didn't like it from the start, collected dirt inside the transparent case
Apple black keyboard - better than the white one, but very mushy
Apple aluminium keyboard - o for scissor switches, but one of the little bastards keep giving me little electric shocks
Ducky Shine 1 - MX blues, red backlighting, my first modern mechanical keyboard, very nice
Ducky Shine 1 - MX blues, green backlighting, see above, the green backlighting is nice
Ducky Shine 3 Yellow Edition - MX blacks, orange backlighting, feels gritty, the backlighting is orange to me, not yellow, disappoint, using it at work atm
QFR - MX black, nice and smooth, branded case, but doesn't bother me
QFS - MX green, fantastic, good clicky action, unbranded black case
CM Trigger - MX blues, broken (bought for repair or parts, still on my list of things to do, kinda works sometimes)
HHKB 2 Pro, white - most excellent, nice layout, very thock
Model M full size - * 2 pretty much the same, good solid feel, one is a bit inconsistent (rivets?)
Model M SSK - * 2 pretty much the same, Esc doesn't click on one, modifiers stick a bit on the other, good keyboards (using one to type this)
KeyCool 87 - MX red, whiter than white case and PBT keycaps, looks great, switches way too soft
IBM something rubber dome - good feel for a RD keyboard, managed to find a nib one somewhere, then threw it out
innumerable Dell rubber dome keyboard - meh
innumerable other generic rubber dome keyboard, some average, some bad, some absolutely atrocious
iPad onscreen keyboard - very light feel, no tactile feedback, reasonably spaces keys though, usable in an emergency
Digital something - rubber dome keyboard, but almost feels like a cross between Thorpe and MX red, very good as far as RD keyboards go (SO using it now)
CODE TKL - MX clear, newest keyboard, the switches are about the first ones I don't bottom out all the time, liking it so far!

There's probably a few more, but as far as memorable (and not so memorable) keyboards go, that's most of them.  I'll update this if I can remember any more of them.

Edit 08-Sep-2015: added the CODE TKL MX clear

Oh, I totally forgot about all the Sun keyboards I've used... that takes me back a bit.

I used whatever would have come with an Ultra 10, 60, 80, and the old Sun Blade 100s. I think they all used the same keyboard, but the Sun Blade's matched the bluish color of the case. And probably USB. I don't remember them typing bad, but I do remember them having Control in its proper location between Tab and Shift.

First post here.

1. TT eSPORTS Poseidon Z (proprietary "blue" switches)
2. Poker II - Blues

Just got the Poker and I'm loving it. The actual MX cherry switches are a noticeable step up in quality from the ones on my first keyboard. Looking to purchase something with browns or clears next to try that out.

Only listing interesting ones I owned, tried and used for some time in the past:

Filco MJ2 87 with browns
Filco MJ2 104 with blues
CM QFR with reds
Cherry G80 2500s and 3000s with vintage blacks, standard blacks and vintage blues (including vintage NIBs)
Cherry G81 3000s with MY switch (new ones)
Model Fs (XT, AT, terminal) from 1985-1986
Model Ms (standard, terminal, space saving, including some NIBs) from 1986 to 1994
Unicomps (made in 2009-2011)
Dell AT101W with Alps black
Apple Extended II with Alps salmon
Alcatel keyboards with Acer switches
HHKB Pro II
RF 87UB-45g
RF 87UB-55g

Self made custom keyboards:

ErgoDox in acrylic and PVC cases with all kinds of cherry and gateron switch, also modified (different springs, lube) in any combination you can imagine, plate and PCB mounted, ABS, PBT, POM keycaps, you name it.
60% keyboards with the MX switches I like (vintage black on PCB and plate, cherry green, gateron blue on plate) and Alps variations (matias switches clicky and quiet, on plate obviously), tried those in acrylic, PVC, wooden and aluminium cases, with ABS double shots (tai hao and cherry vintage), PBT blanks, PBT DSA blanks, SA Round 5.
Numberpad with salmon alps plate mounted (basically cut off from AEII, controlled with arduino micro).

Out of those I only sort of use 4 keyboards:

1) ErgoDox with vintage MX Blacks modified with ligher springs from new MX blue switches, plate mounted, DCS PBT blanks and PVC case (rarely used nowadays)
2) GON's 60% with bluetooth, stock vintage MX Blacks (taken from NIB G80-2500), Round 5 SA keycaps, in layout similar to HHKB, it's encased in CNC aluminium from Massdrop (only used with iPad on the go)
3) IBM Model M 1390401 from 1988, only modification is red ESC key, doesn't need bolt mod yet as it only misses 3 rivets, one under space bar, 1 under arrows and 1 under numberpad 0 key (this one is used quite often)
4) RF 87UB-55G, completely stock, just awaits PBT spacebar from MassDrop (this one is used 99% time since I bought it last summer, IMO best keyboard money can buy today).
