[IC] Mystery Machine in DSA/GMK
« on: Sun, 28 February 2016, 22:17:04 »
Hey guys I posted this IC a while ago but is just getting some attention now so I figured I should update the post.  This is the new and updated version of the keyset.  It will most likely be SP DSA or GMK.  If anyone has feedback or ideas for novelties let me know.  I would really appreciate any and all help.

Just some background, I grew up watching Scooby-Doo and it was my favorite show as a kid. I thought the colors of the Mystery Machine were really cool and I figured it might look good on a keyset.  This is what has become of the set since.  I have had a lot of help from people like Pinecone who have breathed new life into this old project.  I think the biggest and best change from the original was updating the blue to a more vibrant shade.  Anyways guys, thanks for stopping by!

Man, people have really been coming out with some flashy-ass sets recently. Honestly, I couldn't see myself using anything like that, but some people on here definitely seem to like obnoxiously bright sets like this.

Also, this should probably be in interest checks for future reference

Apologies, new to GH so I don't quite know where everything goes.  I will make sure to post there in the future.  And yeah it is pretty bright, I can see how that would be kind of a turn off to some people.  I mean typically I am not a fan of bright sets either but I just really like the colors and it was my favorite TV show as a kid which adds some sentimental value to it.  Thanks for the feedback!

I'd centralize the legends and mods with rounded gothic font or something similar like most of SP's DSA sets. Otherwise, love the colors.

You should stick to the proposed logo and have orange legends on green caps for alphas and orange on blue for modifiers.
Also, if tilde is blue, then should also be pipe/backslash, in my opinion.

But seeing how many people like GMK skeletor, there seems to be a market for these sorts of sets

You bet there is. I'm in for both.

Not OP obv, but here's a super lazy mock-up I made with TalkingTree's suggestions in mind. I also changed the orange from OAV to OAS.

Maybe modifiers should be green legends on blue caps, to make a sort of gradient to the alphas.

Mine too but I will only buy it in DSA, not a big fan of SA.

One problem, I have a 108 k-board, so I be  missin 4 caps.

I'd be more interested in this if it was DSA, and using the mockup with green legends on alphas. Not as gaudy but still retains some of its fun colors.

I'm loving the flashy sets.  A nice break from mundane beige and gray heavy sets out there.

Probably safe to give it a little bit.  We've seen a few OPs vanish for a bit only to return.  Hana's in that boat right now with the OP having returned and trying to move it forward.  Perhaps this one will do the same.

A little too flashy for me, but it would still be pretty cool if you could get the legends printed in The Mystery Machine's font.

Here's the OP's second option with fonts modified to more closely represent Signature Plastic's font size and placement.
130330-0

OP absolutely nailed the theme with the colorway and I could appreciate it but it wasn't something I would have considered buying.

I think Pinecone's second mock-up refines the concept into something that probably cannot be improved upon unless novelties are added.

130332-1

The problem is in designing novelties that don't infringe on Hannah-Barbera's copyright.  Scooby Doo's dog tag would be a great novelty for the OS key but probably can't be used.  I think Mystery Machine would be a great name for this set and, if that is the OP's intent, he should change the title to reflect that.  Yet, as good as this looks on the screen, I can't help but wonder if it would be too colorful for a keyboard.

Also, OP (admgc) of Green Screen was gone for almost a month before coming back and resuming work on his set.  With so many key sets in the pipeline, there's no need to race to the finish line.

Thanks! And I agree that novelties and such are all that's needed at this point. I've been away for a little so haven't made a full-size mock-up yet.
I'm still relatively new to the mech scene, so I get a bit impatient (which I realize is a bad habit considering things don't get pushed out around here for months, if not years).
+1 for mystery Machine!

Not as bad as I imagined. Hell, we have a He-Man set about to go into production. Might as well try a Scooby-Doo set.

Can we try G. I. Joe or Thundercats next?  :P

Alright, I'm back in full force (sort of). After my inbox died on Reddit from people asking if this set will be real thing, I figure I'll give it a shot. Here's a base kit mock up of what could possibly be "Mystery Machine". Profile unknown since this is preliminary of course, but given how SP's SA queue is too long, we might have to look at other options such as GMK. Discuss! Your opinions will be much appreciated  :thumb:

COLORS from SP:

Green: VAT
Blue: BBQ (yum)
Orange: OBC

COLORS from GMK:

Blue: UN6037
Orange: V2

In short, the colors of the caps will be identical to my post the other day:

I'll do mock ups for child kits and potential novelties if this gains enough interest  :)

Colors are still tentative and since SP's SA queue is so damn long (I heard the rest of 2016 is already booked), might have to switch to GMK or wait forever.

Yeah there is no way that this can be SA and get here in a reasonable time.  It could be DSA or GMK.  I would be in favor of GMK.

Yeah there is no way that this can be SA and get here in a reasonable time.  It could be DSA or GMK.  I would be in favor of GMK.

I'm for DSA or GMK as well. You should update the OP and add the new images at the top (don't delete the old images, so people can see the progress that was made :) ) and change the title to something more enticing, if you have the permissions. I updated my OP post with GMK color codes.

But seeing how many people like GMK skeletor, there seems to be a market for these sorts of sets

I agree, I was a Skeletor buyer. For me, I'm just looking for something different. Colored mods + colored alphas on white can get boring sometimes. Although I have some decently colored SA/DSA sets, I like keysets that are bolder and a bit adventurous.

Yeah that would be a good idea.  I will update the post right now.  I really like the way the set is going and I think it would be really nice in DSA.  I dunno about interest though, it is kind of hard to gauge.  I don't really want to make another reddit IC post for a little bit so I might put this on hold for a month or so just to wait for everything to calm down and then run the IC.  I really want to make the set happen so I am definitely not going to give up on it.  I think updating the blue was a really good idea and it makes the set pop a lot more.  I think DSA is the way to go too.  That way you don't get anyone saying "Its just Troubled minds and Pulse" since it will be in a different profile and plus the legends are completely different and the orange is great.  Anyways, I think that is the game plan as of now.  I don't really want to just spam the sub with tons of IC's all the time, that will just create less interest.

As for profile, GMK could be interesting, but their colors are limited.

What about SP DCS? I know there are some detractors for DCS, but done well, it could be done with bolder colors than GMK, and with better prices. SP's wider range of colors could match the Mystery Machine better. Furthermore, there hasn't been a DCS buy in a while, maybe time to revisit the profile again?

Likewise! I can only throw so much money at boring "classic" black/white/grey/beige sets, so having something different and bold is great, in my opinion.

You do what you think is best. You're spearheading this set. I'm just getting the ball rolling :thumb: I think for now we can leave the profile open to what people feel like they want, DSA VS GMK. Both manufacturers have the colors we want.

In regards to people possibly saying "Its just Troubled minds and Pulse", I disagree. There's only so many colors to use and there's already a long-debated colorway ownership dealio, so I don't think it'll be an issue. Besides, this isn't some arbitrary design. There's pre-existing inspiration from it (Rooby rooby roo!)

That is a possibility. I think we're keeping our options open so that could definitely be in the fold, if people like the idea. I personally dislike DCS  :)) :))
