[IC] DCS YOLCH | ON HOLD UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE
« on: Sun, 02 April 2017, 17:52:04 »
READ THE 1.01 UPDATE HERE

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
THIS MOCKUP IS NOT FINAL. I know there are a few duplicates, this is just to give an idea. I made this at 3 AM last night.
GE, GX. The same colors DSA dolch was done in. Yellow is YBP.
Keyboard Layout Editor Link if you want to borrow the template for something else.
NO LONGER LOOKING FOR VENDORS, BUT IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO MAKE A LARGE ORDER FOR YOUR STORE PLEASE PM ME
I don't have enough money, experience, or time to run this on my own.
I will split it into kits based on recommendations from here.
Ideally, this will get run later in Q2 or Q3 of this year if enough people are interested.
If anyone knows where to get proper renders, please let me know. Not those 3D ones.
MY GOALS FOR THIS GB:
-DCS
-Reasonably priced (Ideally under $90 for a base kit of alphas and mods, and an accent/compatibility kit)
-Good compatibility (No weird international kits, but I'd like to cover most basic layouts like 1800, 660m, hhkb, etc.)
-I gain GB experience so I can run better sets
-DCS
-Yolch
If you have ideas, post them here.
Looks nice! Where do the names come from for these sets?! Dolch, yolch...
Is it a historical thing?
they'll buy one if it's cool enough
i have other ideas for sets, but yolch feels like a safer thing to run to get experience before i run something weirder.
Great color scheme.
Out of curiosity.  Why have you chosen SP instead of GMK for this set?
Out of curiosity.  Why have you chosen SP instead of GMK for this set?
I like DCS and would like to see more sets in it. GMK and SP's spherical profiles have a large production backup because of how many sets get run in those profiles.
I don't want to be responsible for a set for 8 months+
Not a fan of DCS but I like the colors. Not enough sets with any yellow at all really and this does it well.
UPDATE 1.01
KLE Link
NOTES:
-Removed a lot of the more obscure compatibility keycaps to keep price down
-Removed most of the extra numpad keycaps, numpad will be sold as a 13key
-Moved ISO into its own kit
-Fixed numpad colors
-Removed 6u spacebars
Proposed kit split:
Base set - Alphas and mods, and 15ish keycap compatibility kit, for a total of 102 keys. Enough for 95% of layouts. Keeping the three together makes organization a lot easier, and (probably) keeps the price down a bit.
Numpad Kit - Self explanatory.
ISO kit - Comes in 2 colors, with blanks. Also includes a yellow enter keycap. I don't know if cherry has ISO Enter legends for Cherry font. Will ask when I email them this week.
"Accent Kit" - This isn't shown on the mockup. Would include Yellow ANSI enter, WASD, ESC, and spacebars.
Are you aware that 6u DCS space bars are stem centered?
Is that a good thing or a bad thing?
Or: Does that mean it's worth including them?
I took them out in the 1.01 iteration because not many keyboards use them.
If they are out already, it does not matter anymore. They would not fit 18XX boards, neither PCBs that may take the standard off centered stem Cherry space bars. It was just a heads up that's irrelevant now.  :thumb:
Any thoughts about using JTK as the manufacturer?
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada
Any thoughts about using JTK as the manufacturer?
I really like JTK, but I've been lobbying for DCS for a reason. I also have some other plans that I can only accomplish with SP.
If this goes well, I might do a JTK set down the line.
Strong Wu-Tang vibes from this.
I generally hate all keycaps. Keycaps are for poofs. Real men touchtype on stems. Non-functional artisans are awesome, I use them for the ESC key ... escape is for cowards anyways, real men go frontal assault.
Why remove the 1u Ctrl and Alt if you're going to keep the 1u fn and short shift?
What is the cost savings of removing the 1u caps?
3 kits:
  • Base - covers most keyboards
  • Compatibility - allows set to fit all keyboards but split spacebar keyboards
  • ISO - self explanatory
I know that you're going for cost saving, but splitting into these kits makes the base set attractive, and the compatibility set small enough to be the right price to buy (if you need it).
This is the way to go. Proper 1800 and 75% compatibility is a must for me.
I'll ask SP for pricing on both options when I email them. I'll probably do that today or tomorrow. I'm suddenly very busy, though, so patience will be warranted.
I'll have to weigh the pros and cons of an expansive compatibility kit once I get pricing. I'd rather have a big one, but if it's more than like $30 I'm not sure how excited I'll be about it.
My other issue is that ISO kits with legends are kinda silly, since someone always says "BUT IT DOESN'T WORK WITH SERBO-CROATIAN, SO WHAT'S THE POINT?" This might be a little superficial of me, though.
I'll have to weigh the pros and cons of an expansive compatibility kit once I get pricing. I'd rather have a big one, but if it's more than like $30 I'm not sure how excited I'll be about it.
My other issue is that ISO kits with legends are kinda silly, since someone always says "BUT IT DOESN'T WORK WITH SERBO-CROATIAN, SO WHAT'S THE POINT?" This might be a little superficial of me, though.
I doubt the compatibility set would be $30, with 22 keys it isn't that big. (I don't think I made it clear enough, hopefully I did. This is what it was supposed to be).
ISO legends are silly, but ISO-UK seems like the best starting point.
Most legends are close enough (for DE, SE, NO, DK). If you want a "gets most things" set then something like this:
I have quite a few Wyse keyboards from various years of production. The keycaps on these were all made by predecessors of Signature Plastics and what eventually became DCS. The earlier Wyse keyboards had notably thicker keycaps than the newer ones.
I'd totally hop on DCS if they were thicker.
There is no such thing as a thick DCS, the closest thing to it is GMK's. But, GMK original Cherry molds have a better design.
Are you saying that Wyse used GMK/Cherry and then transitioned to DCS?
I'll have to take another look at those keycaps!
Wyse and GMK had wholly different tooling.
I like that ISO kit, but I still need to check pricing from SP. Once I have more info from them on the base set, I'll start exploring other kits.
That is correct!
So I checked back on a few threads and it verified what I thought. Wyse keycaps are made by Comptec...the parent company of Signature Plastics in a profile most similar to DCS. Boards such as the WY30 have thick keycaps compared to newer boards such as the WY85 which have thin profile.
No. DCS is a cheap version of Cherry profile. I have never seen a Wyse board featuring anything else but DCS like key caps.
The older caps (likely from terminal keyboards, rather than the PCE keebs) were thicker than the newer ones, but still not quite as thick as GMK.
Well, maybe there were something better than DCS in the past; however, for new sets in double shot Cherry profile there are only DCS or GMK. I'd go for GMK anytime. There is no substantial savings going for DCS. I wonder what are the OP's rational for going for DCS, though.
Just waiting on price info from SP before I make any kit changes.
Emailed them on Monday morning.
DCS gets some unfair hate, IMO!  I'm super glad it's getting some love!  Are you going with the Cherry font, or the old school font?
