Sorry, it is Jan.
Oh whew, I was totally ready to wait until June
Since gmk makes 1u and 2u convex (spacebar-like) keys, what about contacting them asking for other sizes? I don't know if 3u or 3.25u .... Or both?
That would require new moulds, though. IIRC this also came up in the GMK Nautilus IC (because it does have an extensive spacebar set already), but there was no way for it to happen.
Thanks for your answer, so the mid mount connector would be the only chance.
I think that many would like the chance of saving (money, time), by not having a plate, with a thicker PCB.
No that wouldn't work either. Take a look at the picture again:
It is different direction.

No matter how thin the port is.
The PCB's space is the same.
You can see there's no room for thicker PCB.
(This is first sample, , PCB is not extended near port, 2mm is okay, but for 2nd sample, it will extend and goin to the cutout, if it become thicker, not able to fit I think)
Not every case's cutout is the same as this one, but if we make it with 2mm.
Means some cases might not fit.
There needs to be a protrusion on the PCB where the USB-C port is. To allow USB C cables to be plugged in, this protrusion needs to be so long that it actually sticks into the USB port hole in the case. Doing this, it touches the top of that hole, so if you made the PCB thicker, it would interfere with that hole, meaning the PCB wouldn't fit inside the case anymore.
The only way to fix this would be to cut the hole open a bit or shorten the standoffs inside the case.
For what it's worth, I wouldn't want to build this board without a plate, purely for aesthetic reasons.
