[IC] Hineybush Compact 1800 (HBCP)
« on: Wed, 13 June 2018, 10:36:26 »
hey

The 1800 and compact 1800 layouts are by far my favorite for keyboards, and I wanted to create an 1800-based layout board of my own. After experiences with the Leopold FC980M and seeing other compact 1800 boards around, I've come up with the HBCP.

The design is obviously very simple - something I definitely wanted to do. The indicator area is based on the original Cherry G80-1800 indicators. I'm considering getting some screen-printed polycarb or brass (or something else, idk) badges for the area with indicator symbols.

Case features:
  • CNC'd 6061 aluminum top/bottom
  • 6061, stainless, brass plate/weight (ideally - final materials TBD). I think it'd be fun to get quotes for a magnesium alloy case and tungsten plate/weight too for the hell of it.
  • No RGB underglow because I don't like it
  • optional half plate version of plate
  • USB type C connector
  • colors - not sure yet. proto will be black. i guess this depends on the final manu (searching for contacts btw, if you have a good one drop me a line)
  • 4 5 degree angle
  • optional o-ring dampening for plate - you literally just put o rings between the case/plate/screws
  • no switch top opening
  • might add some sound dampening as an extra thing if people would want it

Layout support:
  • Bottom row: 1.5-1.5-7-1.5-1.5; 1.25-1.25-1.25-6.25-1.5-1.5; 1.25-1.25-1.25-6.25-1-1-1.
  • ISO: maybe with a separate plate, not sure how to approach bc i don't really care for iso (sorry)
  • Split backspace
  • Split vertical 2u keys on the numpad (ie four 1u's instead of two 2u's)
  • Stepped caps lock
  • KLE (thanks to AceRecon from discord):

PCB: I'll be designing this as well
  • Aforementioned layout support
  • Definitely QMK support
  • Maybe Keyplus support (support for both can be done with the same PCB depending on the controller I use, i think)
  • In-switch one-color LED backlighting (not implemented with keyplus yet)
  • No underglow (no need because the case doesn't support underglow)
  • USB type-C connector
  • PCB-mount stabilizer support
  • can't decide between 1.6mm or 1.2mm thick PCB, 1.2mm would be fun

I'll be ordering a prototype case very shortly, and I anticipate having a prototype PCB done and ordered in the next 3-4 weeks. Date for run is TBD, but I wouldn't expect it earlier than August.

I'll probably add stuff as I go.

If anyone has good ideas about plate design/acoustic holes/fancy crap like that let me know, bc I want this to not be a Bad Keyboard

also I'll take/upload a pic of the plate design later. imagine a boring flat base with a small inset for an old-style machine tag like this

A riveted (like actual rivets, not looking riveted but really just adhesive) plate on the base with some information and maybe like a serial number/article number stamped into it could be REALLY neat.

Model:
Version/Rev:
Designer:
Article #:
Compatible software (something like that):
Controller:

It might have to go on the back and I imagine a lot of that would be silk-screened on, but stamping some of the information could be really cool. I'd definitely be willing to help with some of that, if needed.

Not sure if i'd do actual riveting. Probably some low-height buttonhead screws or like you said, adhesive. I'd def like to do the information you included, I'll have to play with the design/idea a bit

My only feedback is to stick to QMK or both :)

Yeah it'll definitely be QMK. Keyplus would be a nice secondary if anything.

No, I personally don't care for switchtop opening so this plate won't offer it

I appreciate the reply, I do look forward to it anyways since its 1800 and possibility of a brass weight :)
