Keyboard not recognized in OSX?
« on: Mon, 10 May 2010, 08:10:25 »
So I'm trying to connect a G81-7000 to an iMac through a PS/2 to USB adapter and it won't recognize the keyboard.  It shows the popup window where it asks me to press the key to the right of the shift and all that but never gets past that screen.  Any ideas?

Adapter works fine with XP with this keyboard.

Also works just fine on a Vista laptop so it's not something to do with power....

It doesn't respond in the setup screen? You can simply close the window if you want too. It's just an easy way for the OS to detect what kind of layout you have.

Does the keyboard work at all? For example, just open textedit or any text app and start typing. Does the PS/2-USB adapter work for other keyboards on the iMac?

I'm getting ready to spam all these threads with "USB TO PS/2" in giant red text...

When adapting a computer BUS to something else, it is the BUS name that goes first.

No, it's not responding at all, I think the adapter just doesn't like OSX.  I don't have any other keyboards at work here to try it with any others.  Funny cause the advertisement specifically said works with osx....geh

Is an AGP video card a VGA to AGP? I think not.

But neither is it AGP to VGA.

I don't understand what you're trying to say.

Yes, it is an AGP to VGA card.

All expansion cards adapt the bus they connect to (be it ISA, PCI, AGP, PCIe, whatever) to the function of the card. USB is one such bus. When adapting a bus to another purpose, the function of the device doing the adapting is turning the bus into the other function...not the other way around.

Ok that makes sense, I've just never looked into it.

What of the adapters that everyone calls USB to PS/2 (usb being the female, PS2 being the male)   is that just a misnomer as well?

And that's how we ended up here lol.

It's the same thing, unfortunately...

My arguments are useless because despite making a valid point, if we actually used that terminology, we'd confuse everyone to death.

It does not recognize the keyboard on boot? I have an eMac and also have this problem with adapters. It has to be a power issue, because a regular USB keyboard works fine.

Last time I checked, an adapted PS/2 keyboard is indistinguishable from a USB one other than the amount of power used.

Once you're booted up, the adapted keyboard should work fine.

How about if we just call it a dongle?  I still say USB to PS/2 cause that's the way the signal goes.

Lego don't have  dongles.  Sad.
