Reviews / Re: KBD8X MKIII - Gateron Oil King switches and PBTfans Dolch Key Caps
« Last post by HungerMechanic on Sun, 10 December 2023, 22:54:34 »
I wanted to thank you for writing this, as the KBD8X MKIII hasn't been getting nearly enough attention. [The KBD8X MKII was helpful to many during the pandemic measures, as it was one of the few TKLs being released by the hundreds. Even then, it wasn't that easy to get.]

I will look this over when I have time. I don't currently need such a heavy keyboard, which is difficult to move around. But the MKII was excellent for tactiles, and the MKIII is likely to be similar in a proper configuration.

Keyboards / Re: Budget switches with a soft bottom out
« Last post by HungerMechanic on Sun, 10 December 2023, 22:48:01 »
I was trying the sample switches I got and found the Feker Aphonia really nice, it's mostly the very soft and cushioned bottom out feel that I think I liked, though I don't really care about having silent switches and it did feel like it needed some better lubing as it wasn't really that smooth.

Does anyone have any recommendations for medium weight linear or tactile switches that have that sort of cushioned bottom out and feel smooth out of the box? Preferably under 50€ for 90pcs.

KTT Mallo is soft in-general. It's probably 'medium-weight' when using the stock 67 G spring option. [But you need to at least lube the leaf-area + spring to reduce extraneous sounds.]

SP Star Meteor Orange is a fairly mellow light-tactile that is at pretty light weights by the time it has been pushed down.

I found that the spring weight of Gateron Pink gave a nice experience. Maybe you can find out about that spring, and use something similar in a linear.

It seems to me that Momoka Frog and WS Yellow linear are worth investigating as mellow linears, as well.

Some of the more reasonable long-poles are Naevy 1.5, lubed Blueberry Chiffon V2, and especially MODE Tomorrow.

BTW Silent switches will often be very soft (and mushy) at bottom-out. Especially Aliaz. And Bobagum.

U4T is a long-pole switch, so the elongated stem pole will always be slamming into the bottom of the housing.

As a result, it will always feel as if you are slamming onto a hard surface. It's so consistent that I've found long-pole light tactiles to be a good fit for a plateless mount, since they form their own 'plate' anyway.

What I am trying to say is that you will always get a degree of harshness from long-poles. You may be able to mitigate it with a softer mounting setup and plate, but that consistent slamming will always be there.

Off Topic / DOOM's 30th Anniversary
« Last post by Kavik on Sun, 10 December 2023, 21:47:58 »
Well, it's been five years since I posted this: https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=98563.msg2690117#msg2690117

Since then, I've played DOOM Eternal and its two expansions The Ancient Gods Part 1 and Part 2 several times on nightmare (it's the best first person shooter in several years), and, in 2021, I played through every single original DOOM release, plus Romero's new maps: DOOM (plus The Ultimate DOOM episode 4), DOOM II, DOOM II Master Levels, Final DOOM (TNT: Evilution and The Plutonia Experiment), Romero's SIGIL, and the couple WADs Romero made as practice for SIGIL. I didn't do a pistol start on each level, but they were rather tough games nonetheless, and the level design is extremely creative in the later games. I wrote a review for my friend after beating each game in which I pointed out notable maps, and it was nearly impossible to describe the levels.

And this year saw the release of MyHouse.wad, one of the most creative and technically ambitious maps made for the game. This game has more longevity than any other.

Happy 30th, DOOM.
