[IC] Meridian
« on: Thu, 06 August 2020, 22:43:44 »

Meridian
Ergonomic 60% Keyboard

Tradition and Revolution
A seamless design combined with sharp angles constructs a centerpiece fit for your modern desk.
The three LED indicators and identical alphanumeric bend angles carry on the legacy from the Prime_E.

Trustworthy Typing Experience
An aluminum top-mounted plate offers typing comfort and a middle-ground rigidity which pairs well with various switch types.
The internal brass weight adds enough heft to keep the board stable during heavy use.

The Ergonomic Factor
Based on the Prime_E, the alphas bend in at a soft 8 degree angle rather than the aggressive 12 degree bend of most Alice-esque boards.
The layout is built around common keycap sizes for maximized compatibility with existing keysets.

Specifications
PCB: Soldered, USB-C, ESD protected
Indicators: RGB LED indicators, in-switch caps lock LED
Plate: Aluminum, top mount
Typing angle: 7 degrees
Alphanumerics bend angle: 8 degrees
Weight: Brass, bead blasted
Likely Colors: Black, Dark Gray, Deep Blue

Layout

I absolutely adore this. I always wondered why Alice had these huge gaps on the bottom row. Adding the keys there (and keeping them all 1.25, so that one could keep a kit's 1.5 bottom row for another board, potentially) seems like a no-brainer. Awesome!

I was worried that the spacebar would be too far to the left... Then I ran a test on my own board and it seems I hit the spacebar between V and B anyway. So I guess this is just perfect.

Really nice and clean design. It is always great to see prototypes in such an early IC phase (and even in multiple colors).

Just one layout question: could you add split left Shift support?

The colors will likely stay as they are seen here. At least for the first round. Future rounds may see a change in colors.

Just wondering would we be able to switch the position of the right shift and FN? Think that bottom row maybe become arrows key and the FN key can be up key. Just curious if that even possible.

The layout is pretty much set. Since this won't be a group buy, the ultimate goal with this IC is to attempt to get an idea of how many kits to have made. I've created a very simple form that I invite anyone that is truely interested in this keyboard to fill out.

I see that this is going to be an in-stock item, which raises a few questions. How much supply are you looking at for a single drop, or is there a different system for making it available? I assume that the sale will be FCFS style, which means it would be less accessible for some folks, so I am concerned. Anyways, I like the clean aesthetic of the board, plus it is a ergo board, so regardless of the sales method I am interested.

I noticed the screws on the inner weight are Philips head, is that only for the prototype? I'd vastly prefer something that is less likely to strip like hex or Torx.

the earlier silver/red render looks really good, hopefully that will end up as one of the options :P

Not for this first batch, but perhaps for the next.

Too bad there will be no red in the first batch, I was going to try this color on some board and Meridian will be my next purchase for sure.

Oops. Forgot to remove the google forms link after I closed it. I felt it had a sufficient number of responses. I'll open it back up if/when it's time for the next round.

Hi there. Was really interested in this Keyboard. Any progress or has it died down?

why the stepped look on the bottom case? if they were used for aligning the top and bottom case, wouldn't pillars be easier/cheaper to machine?

While  it is true that making it pillars would be easier and thus cheaper to machine, but then it would beat the main idea/philosophy of this keyboard, which is angled ergo layout keyboard, no?

Word is about 200 in the 1st batch. Not sure 'bout price, though. 300ish, I think, maybe on a larger side (350+)

Approximately 200 for the first round and around 500 for the second. Pricing hasn't been finalized but expect $350-375.

Tentative ETA for the first batch is January. Second batch is maybe March/April.

I don't think that's how this process works.
