Hey everyone! A discord has been made for updates regarding this and other projects I have.

I will still use this IC thread to keep you updated. But if you have any questions or similar, feel free to also ask in the discord!

Thanks!

Hey! I'm aware GMK Wasabi is similar to my design but I've gone through color matching and found a different, more brighter, and neon ish color to fit my Aurora theme and to be different from wasabi. I do also not provide any sub-legends

So if I wanted to run Wasabi with no subs, I'd be ripping you off now?
Would have been proper of you to be like, hey doing this.. But who cares about being proper, right?

After doing my matching with other sets I found big enough differences to not reach out to the other creators because I felt like that was not needed. If this is something you take to heart and do not like, feel free to send me a direct message and we can talk this through

My issue with you is more along the lines of the fact that you run a designer discord, and have written up a guide to IC's, yet you couldn't do a quick DM, and been like hey I'm running this. I do not claim colorway ownership, let's calm down. There is a proper way to conduct yourself though, considering the double-edged sword you are putting out into the hobby.

Don't want any misunderstanding nor arguments going. But I do not own any sort of designer discord, but you are right. Contacting you is something I should've done beforehand!

I like the concept and I like the way the set looks, but I don't feel like the set reflects the theme. Given the name "Aurora Borealis" I honestly was expecting shades of green, blue, and purple.

You may also want to fix your form, currently you can only select one additional kit you'd like to see added

I won't be joining as I don't like GMK caps, but I think the green you've chosen is super nice.

I'd like to see Sour's patent for the concept of green on black, especially since as pointed out, sets such as GMK Terminal and DCS Midnight existed first.

Blowing this way out of proportion. When I ran a set that looked like other sets, I reached out to let them know. Not see the IC, be surprised by it, and screw other designers. Terminal was green on grey. These are both green on black. So slightly more similar. Would have been nice and respectful to get a little DM. Not a big ask.

Hey! The set is self will be fairly basic, but with the additional deskmats (working on an illustrated one) where the assents will bring the theme even further. But thanks for the heads up on the sheets, will fix!

I feel like this set is just asking for gradient legends, even just different shades of green if you were particularly attached to the color. As it stands right now, there just isn't enough color for it to be based on auroras in my opinion

Calm your tits, its not the same set, and he is not stealing from you. Whats this turning to, "oh youre running a gmk set so you are copying gmk wasabi".

Pretty sure GMK's CR is owned exclusively by drop for their WoB sets. Have you cleared this with the designer of that set?

Set looks nice! I like the colour and think it fits the theme well (not every set needs loads of colours) but personally I think the novelties need a little work.

quite interesting. Honestly, I'd like to see more in the novelties kit, whether it be more caps or more designs, and perhaps the deskmat isn't as great as it could be. The colors are quite nice, but I'd definitely like to see a little more in these two areas.

Loving the desk mat but I agree with the rest on adding more colours! I also find the novelties a little strangle, the minimalism comes off as vaguely tech-y when it should be very nature themed imo. Of course it must be hard trying to stick to the theme... but I’d do away with the minimal wave/dot stuff and try for some, idk, trees to match the mountains? Maybe moon and stars, or an owl/wolf? Just throwing out some ideas (:

Beautiful colour for the green; fantastic set! I definitely agree with the folks that think a little splash more colour like purple and/or blue text options for the enter/spacebar/esc keys would really bring it together! Following!

Would have been too similar to GMK Hammerhead, that's deep navy alphas with similar green/teal legends

How about the deep green for mods in base kit, I think the base kit does not represent enough the aurora vide, still need some color-transitions?  :D Also, lighter color accents would be better imo, lighter purple for example would suit aurora more.

i do agree than in their current state the accents do not look interesting to me, with lighter colors they would be although to me the green look perfect, just that the purple and blue are not vivid enough to match it.

Awesome! I think gradient is the way to go for this set too, like the numrow legends being deep blue instead of green and the f-row being deep purple if gmk can do that! Also kudos for taking the feedback and making changes so fast!

Update

With help from snurrebassen and bachoo with rendering and help from Vitrual with the idea behind this kit, I represent a gradient mod kit. Featuring only GMK stock colors, colors that symbolize the Aurora theme better then the previous accent kit.

A mod kit with 5 colors, even stock, is still gonna be...105 USD or up? More?

I own DSA borealis and love it. Why not lean in, do a whole gradient base kit?

Love the updated mods kit! Any chance it could be a second base kit instead? I think both are strong choices and making a full base kit out of the alt mods would definitely hit MOQ

This is mainly a consept to show the gradient, an additional gradient base kit instead of the mod kit is for sure something that will be taken into considoration. Aware of the cost with the amount of colors in the kit, so need to figure something out!

I see a second ~` key and also a second |\ key in the base kit with the same color of those already in the main layout. I propose changing the color of those second keys to the accent color. It may create some new impression for the vibe. Also, a single-color mods with the color different than black-lightgreen, maybe a color of transition from black to light green would be good as well imo. Anyway, thanks for making good keyset, I bought your evil dolch, I will definitely buy this too  :thumb:

It would be better to have 2 of the same keys, if you want to mix different GMK kits like GMK bow alphas and GMK Aurora Polaris. Price would be a different story though.

Yes! There is a 2u shift, the colors seem to work better. But we are still working on it. With the number of colors used, the price will be fairly high. So still working on this!

Hi there, very cool set ya got there! I wanted to take a moment and offer a few feedback notes.

There are a few experimental changes some ortholinear users are throwing around to make base GMK kits a bit more ortho friendly (and ultimately cut back on the number of total keys).

  • Change R2 PgUp to R2 Out
  • Change R3 PgDn/PgUp to R3 Read or Data
  • Change R4 End/PgDn to R4 Read or Data

Currently, you have 14 navigation keys in the base kit. Providing a few "generic" options will allow you to cut back the total number of keys, creating a smaller, leaner base kit. Further, these changes support richer ortholinear coverage (Planck, Preonic) without sacrificing much. In fact, you can cut two keys!

I understand that these alterations to existing keys may prove controversial for many 65% users who depend on correctly labelled keycaps for navigation purposes. However, be the change you want to see. I think this is worth brining up in an IC, even if the answer is a resounding no.

Thanks for your time and consideration. GLWIC!

The special mods look great.  I wish they were just the base mods.  I feel like they fit the theme much better than just the two tone you have going in the base.

Looking at those Alice renders has me wishing the extra B was in the base kit but most people don't kit that way so no big deal there.

I agree completely. The kit mods look great, and make it more than another green/teal on gray/black set. (I don't want to say it's too similar to any one set, but there are a lot with a similar feel.)

It's times like this that I'm reminded of how great the KAT kitting system is compared to all the cherry profile manufacturers like GMK. It would be awesome if we could just buy the alphas and the mods separately. And the runner could do the novelties as both the green and the multi-colored as seperate kits without worrying too much about MOQ.

I don't think we will be offering a second basekit, regarding we'd need a full gradient basekit with 6-8 colors, the price would be fairly high and we'd probably have to base at a higher moq which results in it being hard to sell out, when we run two bases at the same time.

Since it's hard to reach MOQ, I recommend put the 2 base kits in IC form and let people vote. Both are beautiful but only one can be made which is very sad....

Hey! All the kits have been updated now, and R3 PgUp and R4 PgDn are still in the updated kit! We got rid of the duplicated tilde and duplicated pipe key in the base kit. We got rid of the additional spacebars in the gradient mod kit, and we also added a 1u FN r4 with bottom row color. And in the novelty kit, we were only going to update 1 key since it was too advanced for GMK, but we ended up doing some more changes which resulted in the kit being more related to the theme.

Congrats on this IC and GB announcement. :)

For a set themed after a celestial phenomenon, I would have expected celestial-themed Enter novelties. I think of Enter novelties as thematic centerpieces, but your use of mountains and trees feels more appropriate for sets like Alpine, Ursa, Coniferous or Botanical.

If you're open to a bold suggestion, I'd also consider running the mods with gradient legends as your base kit mods. It would further emphasize the theme and offer something truly unique, since there are lots of neon-on-dark sets floating around (Metro, Pulse, Phosphorous, Miami/Vice Nights, etc). Also, it's arguably more on-theme than the current color scheme, since aurora borealis seems to be predominantly green with fluorescent highlights.

Then again I know it can be challenging to make radical changes to a keyset at this point. Just a thought, though!

Appreciate the feedback, we are still working on this. We are checking the possibilities regarding the gradient basekit, if this is something we are able to run for a decent price. More updates will come soon, regarding this, and other exciting stuff!

+1, the mountains and trees enters are nice, but I just don't see the connection. Would much prefer something more like the 1u aurora novelty.

Came here to +1 Break's comment. I think some people like the clean look, but they're going to be the minority here. I would really only be interested in buying a base kit that combines the colors of the alphas with the colors of the current alt mods. Think of the way Metro was kitted. If you want the midnight look, there's a kit for that, but what makes the kit distinctive is the color combos in the base kit.

Looks fantastic and with this change and some improvements to the novelties, I'd be in.

Also...do you think Rensuya would be willing to share the Inuktitut alpha legends for an alt alpha sublegends kit? There's no need for this to be a weeb set but I think Inuktitut sublegends would be on-theme and gorgeous.

Checking for interest for this gradient basekit, this would be switched out for the current basekit, and we would most likley cut the additional mod kit in that case.

Colors used for this Gradient Basekit is following:

From bottom to top:
- TU1 for the two bottom rows
- TU2 for the two mid rows
- Pantone 339 for the two top rows
- 339 as accent

Inuktitut legends don't exist in GMK afaik. If you're talking about vectors, KAT Mizu isn't typographically compatible with the Cherry font.

Those would not be in the basekit regarding price. The more colors we use for a kit, the higher price. And we want to make an affordable kit for you guys.

I hear you. 10 color handarbeit at 150 MOQ was 155$? But if it was gonna be an expensive base kit...how was it a mod kit?

The mod kit was way fewer keys. For us to run that kit we would base it at a higher MOQ or even cut some margins to make the mod kit fairly priced.

It's less vibrant than the original green-black base but there are color transition. It needs a light red-ish tone imo.

I gotta say, I love the new gradient base kit! Imo after seeing it, Im not sure if id buy the "old" kit. But its also a pitty that the mod pack wouldn't make it to the GB since i really liked the other colors. If Id have to chose between the old base kit and mod kit or the gradient base kit, id definitely go with the new base kit.

Also, I'm not sure if its just me but i think the colors of the novelties would need a slight update in combination with the gradien base kit.

Edit: After thinking about it a little longer, i think i like the old base kit more. But id only buy it if the mod kit would make it to the GB as well.

I think I prefer the original base kit with the gradient mod kit (ideally as one kit).

The top to bottom gradient just... doesn't say aurora borealis to me.

I really like the theme but prefer the original set idea with the legends in all green/teal.

This looks great.  The renders that caught my eye were the base kit with the additional mod kit - I know there is a current trend towards sets with a variety of colors on mod legends (Oblivion/Dracula/etc) but for this set I think that would make a stronger base kit than the all-green or the variant version.

I feel the same way. I think it'd be best if you made a form put it down to a public vote between: 1) old base bundled with mod kit; 2) old base and separate mod kit; 3) new proposed gradient base.

+1 definitely this. I did prefer the green alphas with the gradient mods. It just seemed a bit more colorful. Would definitely be interested to see a poll

I have a different opinion: the ALPHAS in the newly proposed gradient base + MODS in the old mods (reddish-blue separate one) best represent the Aurora theme for me.
Either way, I too agree that a form should be put forwards for people to vote on :thumb:

Agreed -- I haven't heard anyone dislike (old) Gradient mods. IMO, axing the gradient mods, which included the pinks and purples, would cost you potential customers. Essentially the keyset becomes just hues of blues/greens at the point, and less interesting.

As a compromise.... how about:

Base kit = Mint alphas + gradient mods [combination of old kits]
+ add-ons:
-Gradient alphas
-Novelties of mint green mods/images
-Spacebar kit

i do agree that visually your idea sounds good, but price may not be, already with the base gradient i am worried that it may end up out of my budget but even more colors i do not even have any sort of hope. and to be honest i like the gradient base and old base equally but although i find the colored mods nice i would not have gotten them for my project, as i think it would not go well with the case i plan to use, and with my budget.
